5 Celebrity Hair and Makeup Ideas For New Year's Eve

Grab some beauty inspiration from these celebs.

So hopefully you've hit up what's left of the Boxing Day sales for a seksi outfit, and maybe even invested in some of my top 10 beauty products of 2011, because there's one more thing you've got left to do this year... show off!

That's right—it's time to party like it's 1999, and with the exception of Halloween, there is no better opportunity to push the envelope a little. (Who knows? Maybe it'll even become a regular thing in 2012.) Whatever your go-to look happens to be—and mine is loose hair, lashes 'n lip gloss—why not make a change just for one night?

I'm not going to tell you to embrace crazy glitter or unflattering eyeshadow and lipstick colours (obvi), but I DO have a round-up of five NYE-appropriate beauty looks stolen from the celebs. It could be as simple as tucking your waves over to one side instead of letting them hang free, or swapping your nude gloss for a bright raspberry. Come get inspired!

Michelle Trachtenberg: Doll lashes, rosy cheeks and flowy hair

This one's my favourite. (No surprise, because do you see that blush? LOVE.) Mainly, though, it's all about the lashes. Inspired by the new "chunky" eyelash trend, I've been making a conscious effort lately to really pile it on when it comes to mascara. I don't think I was applying anywhere near enough before, so you might want to try doubling or tripling the number of coats you usually do. And don't forget the bottom lashes! Here are some tricks for perfect mascara application, in case you missed 'em.

Charlize Theron: Ballerina updo and glossy raspberry lips

I think Charlize is one of the most beautiful women... and I'm thrilled to see her trying something new with this updo/lip combo. We've seen this hairstyle on ScarJo before as well, and it's definitely something that needs to go with your dress (since it can veer over to the prissy side with that hairband). Make sure to get some soft volume going with a bit of wave and the backcombing at the crown. As for the raspberry lip gloss... well that just steals the show, doesn't it? And is so much more interesting than red. You'll want to keep the rest of the face bare and grab the glossiest, more saturated shade you can find. (Or just layer gloss on top of your lipstick or stain. In my collection, Tarte's lip stain comes closest to this shade... and it lasts forever.)

Hilary Swank: Sideswept waves and shimmery lower-lash liner

Hilary is totally rocking the vintagey hairstyle I've been blabbing about all year. And it's honestly not as hard as it looks—you just want to curl your hair from about the mid-shaft point with a large-barrelled iron, and then pin it behind the ear on the same side where the part is. (Make it a deep side part for maximum drama.) I love how she's paired it with a subtle but slightly shimmery eyeliner underneath the lower lashes. GREAT way to keep it modern and fun instead of too retro. You could do it with bronze, gold or silver too—check out the look here on Anna Kendrick (my favourite interpretation).

Olivia Munn: Wavy lob and juicy red lips

Olivia is still rocking the lob and I love her for it—hers is definitely one of the best. Here, it's voluminous, supremely shiny and slightly tousled but not messy. (SO important, because when Scarlett Johansson tried to pull that off, it just looked a bit ragtag.) The eyes have been played up with dark brown or black mostly on the upper lid, and then you could do either this glossy red lip or a more intense and matte one. Your pick!

Diane Kruger: Low, loose ponytail and subtly smoky eyes

And finally we have Diane Kruger, who can do no wrong. (Right?) If you check out the pic at the top, it definitely appears that she's growing her hair longer, which is a nice change from the collarbone-length style she's had for the past few years. And how great is this ponytail on her? The texture is perfect—notice the height at the crown and the pieces around the face—and with some dangly earrings, it's totally NYE-glam. And of course, the makeup is flawless. This smoky eye isn't pushing any beauty boundaries, but it's classic, subtle and gorgeous.

And now... over to YOU!
