Olivia Wilde Schools Us On How To Play up Lips AND Eyes

An incredibly glamorous makeup idea as we head into fall.

I know, it's pretty much the saddest day of the year—back to school/work/reality—but let's cheer ourselves up with some seriously great makeup. Olivia Wilde has delivered the goods once again! This is what she wore to the world premiere of Rush in London last night. I knew as soon as I saw the pics that I'd need to share.

What she's done is paired a rich, matte, Stop-sign red lip with the most expertly shaded, luminous smoky eyes. Either would've been stunning alone (and what most of us would've done on our own), but worn together they make her look incredibly glamorous. And not at all overdone—even though she's emphasizing both features.

The best part is that the eyeshadow changes in the light. Look!

I think the luminosity of it is what keeps this looking fresh. If it were a flat colour it would just feel too heavy and serious with the strong, matte lip. Also, notice that there are no harsh liner lines and everything is softly blended.

Let's get closer:

Is it brown? Is it purple? I'm not sure, but here you can really see how sheer it actually is. (I'll update this post with the product and shade names as soon as they come in.) The shading is darker at the outer edges to give it depth, and there's some silvery iridescence that picks up the light at the inner corners. There's eyeliner as well, but it's super-skinny and the eyeshadow blends that out too, so it's all soft, soft, soft. And no false lashes—she doesn't need them! Looking closer, aren't the eyes a lot less complicated than you thought?

UPDATE: Hooray! Just found the products via her makeup artist, Melanie Inglessis!

I just did a test-drive on this for FLARE and it's a pretty cool product—like an intense lipstick in a lip gloss format, but without any shine. It feels great on the lips.

With something so vibrant, the application really needs to be precise so a lip brush is a good idea, plus lip liner if you're prone to bleeding. Because there's so much going on with the eyes and lips, blush should be very subtle; just enough to wake up the complexion so you don't look dead. Olivia has the barest sweep of peach, which is perfect. (Also perfect? Her haircut and colour. Makes me want Ombré every time.)

The point? Maybe when you wear red lipstick alone, you're stopping prematurely. For a glam night out, adding something like this soft, iridescent smoky eye would be absolutely gorgeous—and very fall 2013. Think about it!

Do you like Olivia's super-glam makeup look here?

Or do you think it's overkill to emphasize eyes and lips at the same time?

What's your favourite red lipstick? (I'll start! It's not matte, but I love Smashbox Legendary Lipstick in Be Legendary, a true red.)
