Amber Heard Fakes an Undercut (and Looks Super-Gorgeous)

I think we can pull this off, you guys!

Our weekend hair inspiration has just arrived, courtesy of Amber Heard—a new red carpet favourite around these here parts, and one who isn't just about the makeup. (Although this was seriously stunning.) Turns out, she can give good hair, too.

Amber hit the red carpet this week (with fiancé Johnny Depp by her side) wearing a tousled style that was pulled back so tightly on one side that it totally faked an undercut effect. Without, y'know, having to go as far as Natalie Dormer and buzzing it off.

Here's the sleek side view:

And here's the other, messier, textured side:

Kind of a cool contrast between the two textures, don't you think? It's also an easy way to update regular straight or wavy side-swept hair, which I'm guilty of wearing almost all the time. Parting it even further over—'cuz I doubt most of us go this dramatic with our parts—and then getting that almost 1980s swoop of volume at the front is a lovely, on-trend look. (I actually did the swoop in Florida this week for dinner one night, and all it needed was a bit of hairspray to hold the sleekness, after using a paddle brush to shape it into place. Works with or without bangs.) Fastening the one side back all tight, instead of tucking it loose behind the ear, just takes this to the next level... imma definitely gonna be doing this soon.

[Update: I should emphasize, this is actually a half faux bob... although the effect would work with hair completely loose on one side, too.]

See? There's no reason to get all dramatic, shaving hair off, etc. Why would you do that when you can easily fake an undercut, commitment-free?

Here's the step-by-step from Jenny Cho, celebrity stylist for Suave Professionals.

Step 1

"Create texture by applying mousse throughout wet hair," says Jenny. Try: Suave Professionals Captivating Curls Whipped Cream Mousse.

Step 2

Blow-dry, using a diffuser. Try: T3 Soft Touch 2 Diffuser and T3 Featherweight 2 Dryer.

Step 3

"When the hair is completely dry, take one side and spritz with hairspray and tightly twist, crossing hair over the side of the nape. Use a clear elastic to secure." Try: Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Extra Hold Hairspray.

Step 4

"Mist dry shampoo at the roots on the other side of the hair to create lift," says Jenny. Try: Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Weightless Dry Shampoo.

Step 5

"Bring the hair back into a loose, low ponytail and roll under, securing with bobby pins to create a faux bob," says Jenny. "Leave random pieces in the front to frame the face."

Step 6

"Lock in the look with a light-hold hairspray," says Jenny. Try: Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Lightweight Hold Hairspray.

And ta-da! The final glam look:

Statement hair calls for statement lips, so I love the strong, satiny red Amber's wearing. The other key features are the brows, which have been darkened here more than usual, to balance everything out. God, she's hot—it would really suck to be Vanessa Paradis right now.
