Reviewed: Rodial's New Glamstick Tinted Lip Butters

They rival the pigment of a sheer lipstick—but in a coconut-scented formula that feels like buttah.

You know how hard it is to find a good tinted lip balm?

Of course you do. There are loads of them out there, but as you know, they usually have at least one of two potential issues: a) they're poor lip moisturizers at best, or b) the "tinted" part is weak... very weak.

I'm happy to announce that I've discovered a line of tinted balms from Rodial that actually exceeds my expectations. You may be familiar with Rodial from having seen it at Shoppers Drug Mart; it's the big sister brand to Nip + Fab and is all about bridging the gap between science and nature. They're most well-known for their skincare products and self-tanners, but have just made the foray into colour cosmetics with the new Glamstick Tinted Lip Butters.

And glam they are:

There are nine shades altogether, and you're looking at seven of them. As you can see, they're a step up from your typical drugstore Baby Lips.

Here are the ingredients:

So there's some good stuff in there, including castor seed oil, cocoa seed butter, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E—plus SPF 15 protection courtesy of titanium dioxide. It's très important to remember lip-sunscreen in the summer... we slather it all over our faces and bodies, so these make it easy to remember the mouth!

Here's how great the balms look:

Gorgeous, right? So many bright colours—I couldn't wait to use them! When you put them on, they feel amazing; super-buttery but not sticky at all. They are among the most moisturizing lip products I've ever tried, hands down. And did I mention they smell like yummy coconut? Mmmm...

Here's a colour comparison:

And now let's take a look each (suggestively-named) shade. Keep in mind that how much each colour will show up will depend on the underlying pigmentation of your lips; mine are quite pink already. Oh, and if you detect a bit of an Eagle Situation here, it's because I was also testing a BB cream that's a little on the pasty side...

Wet is a soft peach that—like NARS Orgasm—would suit anyone's colouring. I really like this one for a low-key, easy neutral shade.

Revenge looks really bright in the tube; once on the lips, it's a great medium pink that flatters without overtaking the makeup.

I thought Blow was really unique; it's a pale pink that is on the cool side. I like this one for fair, cool complexions—it adds a subtle '80s vibe.

Bang is a sheer, light pink. It's similar to Wet except more cool-toned than warm. Again, it makes for an easy day-to-day neutral.

Psycho (how great is that name?!) is the brightest and boldest of the bunch: it's a unique fusion of pink, red and coral tones that I love. This one really wakes up your whole face and brings out eye colour.

Crush is a pale, brown-toned nude. As you can see, it's not for my colouring—it's making me look a bit green!—but it'd be great on warmer skin.

Thrill is so interesting. Like the YSL Baby Doll Kiss & Blush in 10 Nude Insolent (reviewed here), it's a pinky brown that I'd never reach for own my own. But I actually don't mind it when I see it on, for a bit of a '90s feel. We know from Kat Dennings that brown lips are back! I do think it would look better on warmer skin than mine, though.

The other two shades you don't see here are Lust, a pale mauve, and Bite, a pale brownish pink.

My verdict? Although a few of the shades seem a little too close together, I'd definitely check these out if you're looking for more moisture than you'd get with a traditional lipstick. They're a little more sheer, but depending on the colour you can still get quite an impact. My top picks are Psycho, Revenge and Wet.
