Guys, I Discovered the BEST Natural Deodorant

I know it's hard to believe, but Schmidt's Natural Deodorant actually does work!

Schmidt's Natural Deodorant really works!

Oh, natural deodorant. Is there any other beauty category that produces such mass disappointment?

If you're like me, you WANT to get off the whole aluminum-laden antiperspirant train. Alas, you also cannot function in life with hippie deodorants that actually create B.O. instead of fighting it.

For as long as I can remember, I've had the strategy of using something natural (or nothing at all) on days when I didn't have to be anywhere... but relying on the chemical stuff for pretty much all social occasions. Because I am paranoid.

But this has changed now! Er, my strategy, that is—my B.O. paranoia will always remain. You're looking at my new best friends up there, the Natural Deodorants from an indie American brand called Schmidt's.

(Well, they may be indie, but they're also sold at Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters, among other retailers, if that means something to you.)

Mainly, I love them because they made the product I always wanted—but didn't think would ever exist.

Schmidt's Natural Deodorant in Lavender + Sage.

It's a 100 percent natural formula with ingredients I am 100 percent comfortable with using: shea butter, baking soda, arrowroot powder, cocoa seed butter, vitamin E and essential oils. The latter are different depending on the scent, of which there are four: Lavender + Sage, Bergamot + Lime, Cedarwood + Juniper and Ylang-Ylang + Calendula. Plus, there's a Fragrance-Free version.

(Note that this next pic shows travel sizes that I don't think they sell to the public; the regular size is 2 oz.)

I could not ask for anything more in terms of the formula. You may recall that the last time I praised a natural deo, it was Soapwalla; the consensus out there seems to be that Soapwalla is the "best" on the market. Well, guess what? Its second ingredient is sunflower oil. After I learned about the many nasty effects of polyunsaturated oils, I had to ditch it. No PUFAs for my armpits, thank you very much.

The other thing is, Schmidt's works way better than Soapwalla, anyhow. I've been using the Bergamot + Lime for the past few weeks:

And I can report that I do not smell. Like, at ALL. Even the next morning, after wearing it all the previous day walking around the city in 25ºC (77ºF) weather. I could even re-wear the T-shirt, if I wanted to. Sure, your armpits will get a bit damp (since deos don't stop you from sweating), but that sweat won't have any odour. Even the scent of the essential oils is very faint and seems to go away quickly.

How you apply the stuff is important:

Use the spatula to scoop Schmidt's Natural Deodorant out of the pot.

It comes as a solid, and you use the spatula to scoop out a pea-sized amount. VERY important: Rub the product between your fingers to warm it. That transforms it into a colourless, somewhat grainy (thanks to the baking soda) paste that you can then apply with your fingers to your 'pits. If you don't warm the product, it won't spread properly (or at all), and won't be effective.

If you're worried about getting irritation from the baking soda, I don't think you should be. I've done my own DIY homemade deos with baking soda and coconut oil, and every time, had to abort the mission, as I'd develop crazy redness and rashes after a day or two. So I'm really sensitive—but I haven't had a problem with Schmidt's at all.

The best scents to get, in my opinion, are the Bergamot + Lime (so fresh!) and the Lavender + Sage. (I'm not a fan of the Ylang-Ylang + Calendula scent, even though I usually love ylang-ylang.) I think you should definitely try this stuff!
