Young Hollywood Awards 2014: The Best Celebrity Beauty Looks on the Red Carpet

Chloë Moretz, Bella Thorne and more.

Sunday night in Los Angeles was the scene for this year's Young Hollywood Awards, and I have to say—this event is always one of the more interesting red carpets.

In attendance were not only the biggest young stars in the biz right now (Chloë Moretz, Bella Thorne, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale) but also up-and-comers like Ariel Winter, Danielle Brooks and Maddie Hasson. There were even a few YouTubers! Yep, toldja this would be interesting.

Then there's that whole beauty experimentation thing that the crazy kids always get up to. Here's how the hair and makeup all went down:

Chloë Moretz

Chloë had an awesome night, both in terms of awards (she won Fan Favorite Female Actor) and her flawlessly executed beauty look. There's that hair-behind-the-ears style that we're seeing lots of lately (most recently on Kate Hudson). The muted berry-red lip provides just enough of a nod to her dress, but without overwhelming her radiant complexion—and staying totally age-appropriate. Love this!

Bella Thorne

Bella's looking super-pretty here, and I don't even mind the visible roots. Somehow, they just work—I think because the hair near her roots is a darker colour than the bright blonde she has through the lengths. I like this idea for root camouflage; there's less of a contrast as it grows out, and it looks really cool the way she's tucked the dark parts behind her ears and let the blonde pieces fall in front. The other standout for me here is the rich berry lip, which looks amazing with her softly smoky eyes.

Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

I don't love this Ombré on Vanessa (I think the dark hair is much more striking on her), but I do love the new shorter length and wavy texture. Her skin looks perfect here, although the foundation is perhaps a bit too light compared to her neck and shoulders? I like that her brows are very natural, instead of having any hard straight lines, and the blue liner along the bottom lash line is super-fun for summer. She just needs to lose the lip liner! They do make invisible ones now, you know.

Ashley Tisdale

I think this might be the best I've ever seen Ashley look. As with Vanessa, the new shorter length really works wonders for her; I'm digging the smooth finish and chic deep side part, tucked behind one ear. I'm even (gasp!) into the darker roots, as they pick up on her eye colour and make the blonde look a bit more natural.

Kelly Osbourne

Oh, Kelly. You never fail to shake things up on a red carpet, and for that I salute you—even if I personally wouldn't be caught dead in your hair and makeup. Last time we saw Kel was at the Grammys with a violet bob; her new thing is this bright purple Mohawk, complete with matching lip colour. What can I say? It's definitely a statement. It's not "pretty", but it actually looks pretty cool.

Anna Camp

I'm a sucker for fuchsia lipstick, so right away I'm nodding approval at Anna's mouth. (Well, except for the fact that something weird is happening with the application at the corners.) The lashes look a tad heavy, but I love all the light happening at the centre of her face; it's a highlight without shimmer or greasiness. As for the hair, not that it isn't gorgeous, but I think I might've done something flatter, as the volume at the top of this updo tends to accentuate a long face.

Danielle Brooks

Danielle Brooks at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Danielle did herself a disservice with this hair—nobody would look good in this hair. Volume at the top and then super-long, super-straight purple lengths? It's something you'd see on a member of an '80s hair band!

I also think matching the purple eyeshadow to the hair was probably a bit much (better to match your outfit than your hair). Still, the worse makeup crime is the OTT false lashes.

Jessica Lowndes

Jessica Lowndes at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Is straight hair tucked behind both ears the new side-swept waves? I think it might be! Jessica tried the trend, too, and is so model-esque that she pulls it off—though I think she'd look great with big waves to add width to her face. The girl has tremendous brows, so they automatically frame her face without much makeup. I do like the bronzey shadow thing she's got going on, and the soft peach lips.

Audrina Patridge

Audrina Patridge at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Love seeing Audrina, because then I'm reminded of the Justin Bobby years–and those were great times, amirite? Aud is looking great still (29 now, but totally ageless) and really pulls off this romantic hairstyle. I'm fascinated by her skin, because I feel like there's soooo much contouring and highlighting going on, and yet I'm kind of into it. She doesn't need the heavy false lashes and angular brows, though.

Colbie Caillat

Colbie Caillat at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Have you seen the video for Colbie's new song? It's SUCH a great message, I love this woman! She looks far better here than at beginning of the video (all made up Kardashian-style, before she takes off her makeup with a wipe). If Colbie can inspire others to stop trying so hard on the red carpet (and in real life), I'm all for it.

This coral lipstick is gorge for her, and I love the black liner along her top lash line with subtle flirty lashes. Even the headband is adorable, with her long blonde waves. The only thing is that it looks like she might need brow rehab, but it might be too late... or impossible to go through the dreaded re-growth period while in the public eye.

Cheryl Burke

Cheryl Burke at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Cheryl must've got the memo about her frightening false lashes from the ESPY Awards, thank goodness. She decided to replace them with a ton of grey eyeshadow instead. I think in real life (as opposed to the runway), this kind of thing looks better when it's seamlessly blended out. Otherwise, I really love her interesting look—the freckles, the beautiful full lips, the collarbone-length hair.

Ariel Winter

Ariel Winter at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Did YOU look this good when you were 16? Me neither. Life is just not fair. Ariel is like a little red-carpet prodigy, with her long, silky, TV-commercial hair and perfectly-applied makeup. (I think she knows it, too.) I expect we'll be seeing a lot more of her.

Maddie Hasson

Maddie Hasson at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Personally, I'm more into 19-year-old Maddie's vibe. The full dark brows! With the light blonde hair! I'm in beauty heaven. (I swear, I've been having dreams lately about the dark brows/light hair combo.) Notice the tiny hit of yellow at the inner corners of her eyes, and the way the rest of the shadow's been expertly blended. The whole look is very 'cool girl'. More of this, please!

Mishael Morgan

Mishael Morgan at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Even though Mishael is another candidate for a brow overhaul, she looks pretty here, I can barely fault her for that. The halo of tight curls is really working for her, and I adore the cheery pink on her lips and cheeks. Really well done.

Jenna Marbles

Jenna Marbles at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Jenna Marbles is a YouTuber (apparently they're getting invites to these awards shows now). I'm no expert on her, but I've watched a couple of her videos where she's wearing this kind of makeup, and I genuinely thought she was poking fun of it! So what is going on here? Why is she stepping out like this on a red carpet?

If this is indeed how she does her makeup, then I'd like to send her to Colbie Caillat's vid ASAP. I blame YouTube for the proliferation of this look!

Marie Avgeropoulos

Marie Avgeropoulos at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Gorgeousness alert! All I know about Marie is that she's Canadian, that she's dating Tyler Lautner... and that she knows how to look great on a red carpet. Let's take note of her bronze eyeshadow (all the way around), blush and lip colour. Plus, check out how well she rocks the baby hairs. Kim Kardashian was cray for lasering that stuff off.

China Anne McClain

China Anne McClain at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

China is 15 years old—and this is exactly how I expect (and want) a 15-year-old to look on a red carpet. (Not that it's really a place for 15-year-olds, but that's another story.) I do hope she never touches those eyebrows!

Danielle Campbell

Danielle Campbell at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Besides the hair-behind-the-ears thing, the other up-and-coming hairstyle right now is this swoopy volume at the part, which Danielle is representing at this event. Automatically makes the wearer look closer to a supermodel. She, too, is wearing warm tones on her lids for a softer take on the smoky eye.

Hayley Orrantia

Hayley Orrantia at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Hayley tried the same eyeliner look as Vanessa Hudgens, but I think Vanessa did it better. Here, all you see is blue liner jumping out. I think a slightly softer application would've been best.

McKaley Miller

McKaley Miller at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

McKaley seems to have her poses pretty down pat for an 18-year-old. Interesting. I approve of how dark her eyebrows are in contrast to her highlighted hair. Brown eyes with light hair can be such a pretty pairing.

Dascha Polanco

Dascha Polanco at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Dascha's giving me a bit of an Alicia Keys vibe—do you feel it? I like the hair scraped back for her, and the shimmery green-grey shadow to pick up on her dress. The bronzing on her forehead just needed some more blending.

Morgan Stewart

Morgan Stewart at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Morgan is from a new show called Rich Kids of Beverly Hills. There's no doubt she's super-attractive, but would be even more so if she lost the false lashes, softened the contouring and applied her lipstick within her lip lines.

Vanessa Marano

Vanessa Marano at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

I'm sure you remember Vanessa from the MTV Movie Awards. Her and her sister Laura are very hit and miss. Sometimes, they look so cute and age-appropriate. Then you have showings like this, where Vanessa just did not need such heavy eye makeup and dark lips. Her colouring is already so striking, why not let that shine?

Madison Beer

Madison Beer at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Oh my goodness, Madison might have the best hair I've ever seen. I hope it's real? Her brows are killer too. Now here's the really mind-boggling part: she's only 15. Ah, youth!

Molly Tarlov

Molly Tarlov at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

This is pretty cute. I like the ease of Molly's hairstyle, and the cool-toned light pink lip gloss has a nice contrast against her warmer skin tone and eye colour. I think the eye makeup is maybe a little heavy though. Probably brown instead of black (and without the lashes) would've been more fresh.

Jillian Rose Reed

Jillian Rose Reed at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Whoa, it's pretty cool how Jillian's hair colour is dyed to be an exact match to her eyes. That said, my eyes don't really know where to go here—they're bouncing around between the hair and her neon-pink mouth. I think there could be more flattering choices for her skin tone. These shades kinda give her a sallow complexion. Or is that just the foundation?

Lindsey Morgan

Lindsey Morgan at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

Every once in a while there's a celeb on the red carpet who, even though she isn't a model (Lindsey is on General Hospital), has got such model-like features that she doesn't have to even try. The flawless skin and long, subtly highlighted hair require no extra bells and whistles.

Alli Simpson

Alli Simpson at the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards.

I think Alli could ease up on the fake tan. Apparently she is Australian, and maybe they're still into this look there—but I think it's time for it to go! Also not into the "wet-look" hair (only works on models) and lashes (but I repeat myself).

Who had your favourite (and least favourite) beauty look on this red carpet?
