Every once in a while, there's a red carpet that really wows you—and that's how I feel about last night's Teen Choice Awards. So much hair and makeup excitement here! Have a peek, and then let me know which looks you love:

Shay Mitchell

It was a tough decision, but I think Shay wins it for me. The Pretty Little Liars star has come a long way in the past year, in terms of beauty sophistication—and this loose, romantic side braid paired with dark red lips is pretty much the perfect combo. So perfect I want to recreate the hair on myself. You can't see it in the pic, but the braid is fastened with a graphic silver ring.

Her skin looks incredible, matte but illuminated in the centre, and her brows are looking softer than I remember them. I really don't mind the false lashes here, as they're not overpowering the look, and balance nicely with the strong lipstick. Note how the eyeshadow and blush are very, very neutral. Love it all!

Bella Thorne

Bella Thorne at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Are you as mesmerized by this photo of Bella Thorne as I am? There's something about her not-of-this-world hair colour with her peachy skin and brown eyes that is SO appealing. I think it's her eye colour that makes this pop—the strawberry hair just wouldn't work as well with blue eyes, know what I mean?

I'm also struck by the harmony of colour here, since Bella usually goes for brighter makeup like the green and yellow eyes at the Kids' Choice Awards. But here, I adore the rose gold palette on her! Especially the glimmery highlights at the inner corners of her eyes. The false lashes at the outer corners work well here, too, as they "ground" the otherwise pale colours.

Victoria Justice

Victoria Justice at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Oh God, Victoria Justice is so perfect, isn't she? Probably the easiest client ever for a hair or makeup artist... I imagine you don't even have to DO anything, and she looks amazing. As always, I am astounded by her ridiculously flawless skin and expertly groomed eyebrows... though maybe she could have them a touch more natural, you know? I'd love to see Victoria with longer "fans".

Like Bella, she also went for a peachy makeup palette, with a shimmery pale peach on the lips and the barest sweep of peach blush. More false eyelashes here, and again, I don't mind them (what is happening?!). With her simple, half-up hairstyle, this is a great, understated look to complement her delicate features.

Sarah Hyland

Sarah Hyland at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

The night's host, Sarah Hyland, is another one who has come a long way—never thought she'd become a favourite after her rocky red carpet start at the 2012 SAG Awards (think: prom hair and overdone smoky eyes). Here, her hair and makeup is just gorgeous, though! She's got the ideal (rounded) hairline for a severe, slicked-back ponytail. And I love her full brows right now; they're really grown out versus just two years ago. I might just tidy up the few stray hairs along the top in the middle.

The rose-brown makeup palette is unusual but quite flattering. I think the key with brownish tones is to not just wear them on the lips but also the eyeshadow, that way it harmonizes together really well. A lighter colour like this is definitely the best way to do a smoky eye right now, too—a much better choice than a heavy dark grey, brown or charcoal.

Lucy Hale

Lucy Hale at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

More gorgeousness here, from Lucy Hale. I always get nervous when I see these types of hairstyles, with the loose pieces on either side... I think Lucy's is on just the right side of undone (instead of "prom"). Other than needing a bit of powder on the cheeks, I think her makeup is nice as well—love the tightlining around the eyes, and here's yet another false lash look that I won't complain about. I'm telling you, the makeup artists really stepped up their lash game here!

Lucy is wearing:Foundation // Moisturizer // Illuminator in Amped Up // Eyeshadow in Tender Love // Eyeshadow // Eyeliner in Jet Set // Mascara in Blackest Black // Lipstick in Bare Hug

Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Hilary Duff looks fantastic here, especially her hair. I know the textured lob thing has been done and done, but I think she wears this hairstyle really well—way better than most. Super-cute how her long bangs bend to frame her face, like curtains.

The makeup is nothing crazy, but it's so beautiful. Hilary has great skin, so all that was needed was a bit of brow-defining and subtle smokiness around the eyes (especially underneath the lower lashes, which is the new "it" zone). Is she wearing false lashes here? I can't tell!

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Taylor's not looking all that happy! I don't have an issue with anything here... but it's not taking my breath away like many of the others.

I think it's because there's so much happening: bangs, pinky-coral lips, purple eyeshadow, lashes, liner, earrings. It's hard to know where to look. For one, the makeup would've showed off better if she wore her hair off the face. It's really hard to do stand-out, colourful eye makeup when you have long bangs. I'm also just tired, I guess, of her eye makeup technique. Does it always have to be that harsh black liquid liner and false lashes? She should take a cue from, say, Hilary Duff, and lighten things up.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Selena Gomez went sleek and simple for this awards show, and while I can't get that excited about it, I do think she looks great. The real beauty here is the eye makeup: a dramatic black wing that extends from both the top and bottom lids, with some dark grey shadow adding dimension to the outer crease.

With such an artistic eye, you want quite natural brows, as Selena has here—I think filling them in too much would steal the attention and make the look a little harsh. Same goes for the nude lips. She completed the look with a centre-parted, low ponytail. Très grown-up.

Nina Dobrev

Nina Dobrev at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Well, I think Shay Mitchell's side braid was better than Nina Dobrev's... I wish Nina didn't have so much hair hanging out on the opposite side. Hers is a different style of braid, though: what her hairstylist Riawna Capri calls a "rope braid." The makeup is centred around the eyes. Notice how they're rimmed all the way around? There's that 360-degree trend again!

Nina is wearing:Eyeliner in Betty, Charlotte and Scarlette // Eyeliner in Carbon Black // Mascara // Foundation // Bronzer // Lipstick in Bit of Honey // Styling spray // Texturizer // Hairspray

Lea Michele

Lea Michele at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Something looks different about Lea Michele here. Is it just that the photographer caught her in a rare moment when she wasn't doing one of her signature hard poses? Also new is the hair. It's lighter, right? I think this colour is super-pretty for her, though I wish she'd crisp up those bangs. They're a bit too wispy and long in the centre, and are getting in her eyes. They also hide the makeup, which is a shame, because the subtly beachy/glowy really flatters her (and goes nicely with her new hair).

Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

So Shailene is wearing a no-makeup makeup look here. This reminds me of that Rosamund Pike moment that I still think about! It's always nice to see someone with confidence to rock a bare face in a sea of trying-too-hard Hollywood starlets. I applaud that. And her skin does look nice here.

On the other hand, I'm imagining this with a super-bold, precision-application red lipstick. Wouldn't that be a wicked contrast with everything else low-key?

Shailene is wearing:Foundation in Fair-Light Honey // Bronzer in Park Ave Princess // Illuminator // Eyeshadow in Shimmering Bronze // Eyeshadow // Mascara // Lip crayon in Hope

Jordin Sparks

Jordin Sparks at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

I love how Jordin is the happiest person on this red carpet. She gets major points right off the bat for geniunely looking like she's having fun and glad to be there. I also like this hairstyle better than the last time we saw her, at the Billboard Music Awards, with cornrows. It's hard to tell from this front-on pic, but she's wearing a great big, voluminous, curly ponytail. Amazing!

Makeup-wise, her skin looks great as per usual; it's just the eyelashes that are bugging. They're too fake-looking, and she doesn't need them. I'd love to see her experiment more with liner and golden or shimmery tones on the eyes instead of always lashes.

Chloë Moretz

Chloë Moretz at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

This isn't the most memorable Chloë look, but it's still so pretty. The makeup is all about subtly smoky eyes, with bare-ish lips and understated blush. With her big brows, she needs little else. The soft waves are gorgeous, too!

Chloë is wearing: Moisturizer // Concealer in Custard // Blush in Bouquet Rose // Eyeliner in Charbon // Eyeshadow in Nude // Mascara // Lipstick in Loulou // Dry shampoo // Styling cream // Hairspray

Debby Ryan

Debby Ryan at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Debby Ryan looks so different here! Last time we saw her, it was at the MTV Movie Awards, and she was all va-va-voom in long, strawberry-coloured hair. Now she's gone pale pink—so fun!—and is rocking a cool updo, '60s eyes and a nose ring. I kinda love it. It IS a teen awards show, after all. The lashes are over-the-top, but I think they work here for a retro vibe.

We can't see the back here, but the updo is comprised of little knots from the nape upward, which were secured with pins, leaving the ends out. Super-cute!

Debby is wearing:Calming gel // Moisturizer // Foundation // Powder // Concealer // Bronzer // Blush in Pink Explosion // Highlighter in Candlelight // False lashes // Mascara (top lashes) // Mascara (bottom lashes) // Eyeshadow in Tough as Taupe // Liquid liner in Black // Lip gloss in Turkish Delight // Lip gloss in Triple X // Volumizer // Texturizing spray // Hairspray

Hailee Steinfeld

Hailee Steinfeld at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Concealer creasing aside, I totally dig the eye makeup that Hailee is wearing here. See how the black dips down in a very fine point at the tear ducts? Very cool. And so perfect with pink lips and full brows. I don't think a 17-year-old needs to be wearing the false lashes, though.

I also feel like this would've been better with her hair more off her face, to show off the strong eye statement. It would've felt a little fresher and more age-appropriate that way, too.

Hailee is wearing:Eyeliner // Lipstick in Snow Cap

Zendaya Coleman

Zendaya Coleman at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Big news here—Zendaya chopped off her hair, or maybe just got rid of long extensions? It looks like she dyed it darker as well, compared to her last appearance ( at the MTV Movie Awards). I am a fan of the shorter length, and the bangs. It feels like she's not trying so hard to be sexy now, which is a good thing. (She's only 17, can you believe it?) But I think I preferred the old colour; it was a bit softer. And something seems a bit off about the texture here. Is it wet or dry? Soft or crispy? I feel like her hair can't decide what it wants to do.

As for the makeup, three words: bottom false lashes. How are they even a thing? Oh well, at least they're not as bad as that one time on Giuliana Rancic.

Laura Marano

Laura Marano at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

What would a teen event be without the Marano sisters? First up, we have Laura, who is much improved versus the last time we saw her, at the MTV Movie Awards. She's lightened up her whole look, most noticeably the hair. Great job on subtle Ombré here, huh? When hair is straight, it really separates the Ombré men from the boys (or women from girls; no idea who did this). I think she also did a great job of keeping her makeup soft and pretty: sheer rosy lips, blush and lashes. Perfect for an 18-year-old.

Vanessa Marano

Vanessa Marano at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Vanessa is Laura's older sister, and I'm loving her look here. Her skin! Is perfect. I might have dreams tonight about this skin. And in terms of the lips and eyes, she got the same memo as Laura about lightening things up. Last time, at the Young Hollywood Awards, Vanessa's makeup was so heavy. Whereas this—with the soft brown liner, flirty lashes and sheer lips—is perfection. I really think you have to be careful when your skin is this pale, and hair and eyes so dark. Your features are already high-contrast, so a less-is-more approach definitely works best.

Emily Osment

Emily Osment at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Emily Osment is a gorgeous girl, there's no question; but she's a great example of someone whose styling team could use few baby upgrades. I'm talking about the spray tan, first of all—I think it's too dark, and we're moving away from that look, especially with blonde hair. And speaking of the hair, I think her waves would look best if she brushed 'em out. The piecey, tousled look doesn't quite work when hair is this long; I think it's for lobs and shorter.

I do like her orange lipstick (which seems to have rubbed off in the centre?), and her skin texture is fantastic. But she could also lose the false lashes... they look a bit too spidery too me.

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Anyone else having déjà vu? Ariana's style is stuck on repeat. Which would be fine if it was a good style—like Jennifer Aniston, for example, who sticks to what works. But I don't think the matte brown lipstick, ashy brows or fried-looking hair are at all flattering. I've said it all before... Ariana needs to cut her hair and find a new makeup artist.

Cher Lloyd

Cher Lloyd at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Eeks, I really wish Cher hadn't done the false lashes here. They distract from what was otherwise a really gorgeous beauty look—lovely shiny waves, a curve of black liner and brownish-pink lips (which work here but didn't on Ariana). She would've looked so much cooler without the spider-lash crutch that these celebs tend to fall back on. Notice again the lack of blush... I'm starting to get worried that blush is going to go out of style!

Cat Deeley

Cat Deeley at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Cat Deeley could tone things down a bit. I get that she wanted to be fun and beachy, but there are some things I'd change here. First of all, the tan is too much and the hair is too blonde and brassy. I think the latter is just too close to her skin tone... I'd love to see her with a richer, darker blonde that's closer to her natural hair colour. That way, her skin and eyes would stand out better (so long as she stops with the extreme tanning). Also maybe a bit of a bang would be nice? I think it might soften her look instead of always having the long hair in a centre part, which drags a face down.

I do love the orange lipstick and pops of colour on the cheeks. But the lashes... eeks! I can see why she wears them, to help give her eyes a lift. (I have this eyelid type and I can see my future here.) But there has to be a better way of wearing false lashes than this! She should take a cue from the ladies at the top of this post and copy their lash looks.

Jana Kramer

Jana Kramer at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

In contrast to Cat Deeley, here's an example of glowy and beachy really working. It helps that Jana Kramer is a brunette and has a naturally darker skin tone, which makes it easier to pull of a bit more colour. She's got great highlights in her hair, too. I love that she's rocking her natural lips with a bright pink.

Mary Murphy

Mary Murphy at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Mary Murphy has blonderexia and needs help! Or maybe she just needs to back off the tanning and get a hairstyle that is of this decade. I actually love the contrast of brown eyes with blonde hair, although I think Mary does look tons better as a brunette. It's hard to believe her look has changed so much since the early days of So You Think You Can Dance!

Who had your favourite (and least favourite) beauty look on this red carpet?
