Maybelline’s New Rebel Bloom Lipsticks Are Pastels That Pop

Just call them "pastel brights".

Pastels can be challenging to wear, no matter what your skin tone. There’s something about those pale, muted shades that just does weird things, am I right?

But now there's an alternative that even pastel-phobics will love. Maybelline's Rebel Bloom Lipsticks are a new line of next-generation pastels—let's call them "pastel brights".

Let me explain. Instead of your typical pale, sweet, washed-out colours, these bullets have vibrant pigments of pink, red and mauve—and because they're formulated with a white base, they really pop.

(It's the same idea as with nail polish. Painting your neon nail polish over a white base will make it look way brighter.)

Here’s a close-up of the actual colours (there are eight):

The new Maybelline Rebel Bloom Lipsticks.

Because these are pastels, I expected them to have a heavy coverage. But as you can see from the swatches below, the consistency is more sheer, with flecks of subtle shimmer.

Some of the more pinky colours in Maybelline's Rebel Bloom Lipstick line.

Here's a look at them on the lips:

700 Barely Bloomed

This shade, Barely Bloomed, is pretty close to a nude, with a subtle peach undertone. Note how the white reflects the light a little more than a normal nude would.

705 Blushing Bud

Maybelline Rebel Bloom Lipstick in 705 Blushing Bud.

In the tube, Blushing Bud looks like a darker mauve, but it on the lips it's much more pink than expected. After trying it on, it's one of my favourites from the collection.

710 Petal Pink

Petal Pink is a more traditional pastel, and unfortunately goes on a little bit chalky. (See how the white base really shows with this shade?) Although these lipsticks have a pretty creamy texture, you’ll want to make sure your lips are buffed and moisturized when you apply this one, otherwise any flakes will be really noticeable.

715 Hibiscus Pop

As the name Hibiscus Pop suggests, this is a very tropical and vibrant pink, which has a lot of impact because of the white base.

725 Lilac Flush

Maybelline Rebel Bloom Lipstick in 725 Lilac Flush.

Another more traditional pastel, Lilac Flush reminds me of something you might see Katy Perry or Nicky Minaj wearing. Again, the white base really makes the purple stand out against your skin.

735 Rose Rush

Maybelline Rebel Bloom Lipstick in 735 Rose Rush.

Probably the least traditional pastel of the bunch, Rose Rush looks dark red in the tube, but on the lips it’s much more vibrant with some yellow undertones.

740 Coral Burst

I think this was my favourite shade from the collection. A pinky coral, the white base of Coral Burst helps the colour stay true on your lips by blocking out your natural lip colour.

745 Peach Poppy

Maybelline Rebel Bloom Lipstick in 745 Peach Poppy.

I expected Peach Poppy to be a lot brighter on my lips based on how it looked in the tube, but the colour is really subtle—more like a pale pink or nude.

The Bottom Line

If you love your bright lipsticks, but have been searching for new pale shades that pack a punch, then these are definitely worth trying out! They make for a statement lip that's a little more unexpected, and will be even more perfect come summertime.
