For as long as I've been aware of Kat Dennings—which is, according to this website, since 2013—I've wondered about her lips. Her top lip, specifically, because it's way fuller than the bottom one.
Unnaturally fuller? Well, it certainly pinged my "interventions" radar, which sometimes happens when I'm reviewing red carpet hair and makeup.
But then I wondered. Maybe Kat, age 28, was the original Kylie Jenner, before Kylie went crazy with actual injections? Maybe, she just knows how to wield a lip pencil and was over-drawing her lip line before that was a "thing".
Kat in 2002
Kat was 16 here, so we're looking at her original face. As you can see, she was always a beauty, '00s skinny brows and all. (Those eyes!) But as per the custom in Hollywood, she eventually whittled down this nose.
Here you can really see that her lips were more natural-looking at one point. She just looks like a cute early 2000s kid.
Kat in 2005
By 2005, age 19, she was all grown-up and vamped-up. This is much closer to the Kat we know today. Can the girl wear eyeshadow or what? My goodness. Her nose looks a little slimmer here, but I think it's just the angle. Lips, too, seem natural. The top one IS full, but not dramatically larger than the lower lip.
Kat in 2006
In this 2006 shot, you can really tell that Kat has altered this nose. I saw nothing wrong with it, but hey, that's Hollywood. (It's par for the course for actors to slim their noses, so the audience can concentrate more on their expressive eyes and mouths.) I don't think I would have recognized this woman as Kat Dennings, though.
Another shot from 2006, age 20. Same nose? Maybe, maybe not. But look at Kat's lips. They're definitely more even in size, compared to the lips we know on her today.
Kat in 2007
Next up is Kat in 2007. The styling here is actually lovely! But did you notice? Her upper lip has suddenly inflated to twice its size... and I don't think it's from over-drawing. I also think she's tweaked her nose by this point, although this doesn't look like her nose today. It's fairly common for celebs to have multiple rhinoplasties.
Kat in 2008
I just love this pic from 2008. Holy gorgeousness! We should all be so lucky to stand in front of a pink backdrop and wear matching pink lipstick. (It reminds me of the ultra-flattering step and repeat at Victoria's Secret.) Here, Kat has definitely over-lined her top lip, and I'm not sure why that was necessary. Everything else is all romantic and pretty.
Kat in 2009
She looks like a completely different person in 2009. We should give her points for trying this eyeshadow, even if something got lost in the execution. Still, her top lip is very unnatural-looking to me...
Kat in 2010
Here's Kat in 2010, age 24. Mismatched foundation alert! (We need a name for this variation on the Eagle.) Otherwise, I'm loving the gold and rust combo that not many could pull off. It's a little '80s in a good way.
Kat in 2011
The upper lip sitch was still present in 2011. It's weird, right? Even though I'm coveting the actual lipstick shade, and the way she's gazing (reminds me of Léa Seydoux).
This is one of my favourite Kat looks—all pre-Raphaelite gorgeousness. You don't notice the lip mismatch as much with the red lipstick, which I suspect is a bit over-lined on the bottom to even them up.
Kat in 2013
Then we arrive at the famous brown lipstick moment of 2013. At the time, a celeb wearing brown lips was kind of radical. Notice how the over-lining distracts you from how large the upper lip is. I also have a theory here, which is that she had a second surgery on her nose. It seems thinner down the bridge, more bubble-like at the tip. Don't believe me? Check out the next pic.
Kat in 2014
See that sunken area around the nostrils? Looks nose jobby to me! As for the lips, Kat clearly found her groove with these marsala-ish shades.
Kat in 2015
Flaky lipstick aside, I kinda prefer this muted, stained lip finish to the heavy over-drawing. You can also see the newest nose here; it's much more rounded and thinner overall.
And finally, one last shot of Kat front-on. She wears this red lipstick so well!
So what's the explanation here? I think Kat not only enhances her lips, but has had rhinoplasty surgery—totally standard for Hollywood.
Just going by the changes in the photos, I wouldn't be surprised if she actually had a permanent lip implant (yes, there is such a thing!) instead of the usual hyaluronic acid injections, which would inflate and deflate every few months. If she did do that, it would've been during the mid-'00s, which I suppose was its experimental phase, before injections became the gold standard in cosmetic surgery.
Judging by how unnatural it looks, I think that could explain a lot! (Mind you, for the record, I still think she's an incredibly beautiful woman in ALL of these photos.)
