Now that we've talked about the best hairstyles for all types of long hair—straight, wavy, curly—we move on to the medium-length category, starting with straight hair. This in-between length hovers just above or below the collarbones, and might be described as a bob, lob (long bob) or simply 'mid-length'.
It also happens to be one of the hottest cuts in Hollywood right now, and I've got 15 celebrity examples for your inspiration. For the most part, these celebs have naturally straight hair, but you can also get these looks by blow-drying straight and using a flat iron.
Here's your medium-length straight hair inspiration:
Centre Part and Choppy Layers
Olivia Munn is already blessed with the most shiny, healthy-looking hair in Hollywood, which makes her a perfect candidate for this choppy lob haircut. The flirty layers add softness to the centre part, which might look too stark with blunt ends.
Side Parted Lob
One of the most versatile haircuts of all time is this collarbone-length, side-parted lob as modelled by Emma Stone—this would flatter absolutely everyone. I especially love how it sweeps across part of her forehead. Perfection!
Side Parted Angled Bob
Keira Knightley's hair is on the shorter side (more a bob than a lob), but this angled action would work on hair a few inches longer, too. Her hair is cut fairly blunt, then styled to curve just slightly under on the ends, with lots of texture throughout.
Deep Side Part With Height
I keep talking about the "swoosh" lately—that's my word for the sorta '80s-esque height that Rita Ora's got going on at her part. It's easy to get by taking your part way deep on one side. Then, the rest of her hair is flat-ironed super-straight.
Pretty Zoë Saldana is modelling her straight lob styled in a classic blowout. The part could be anywhere with this one; it's more about the soft volume and curved finish of the ends.
A choppy fringe adds an interesting, face-framing element to straight, medium-length hair. Bryce Dallas Howard wears hers with slightly angled ends, similar to Keira Knightley's, but the finish is sleek and high-shine.
This look isn't for everyone, but a straight bob with a heavy fringe gives you instant style cred. Keep the bangs hovering just below the brows, like Rose Byrne—too short and they'll kill the chic factor.
Of course, there's another bang option and it's the side bang. This works well on hair that's more fine in texture, like Karlie Kloss. Just push your fringe off to one side starting from where your hair parts; it should hit at the brows and cover half your forehead.
Long Side-Swept Bangs
A variation on the side bang is this more stylized version on Mena Suvari. Her bangs are longer and sweep across on a diagonal, ending at the opposite temple. So glam with a deep side part.
Leave it to cutie Emma Watson to pull off a half-up style with her mid-length, straight hair. The side part adds definition (so it's not too casual), and the piecey bangs at the sides give it softness.
My girl Marion Cotillard is never one to shy away from risky beauty looks, including this runway-inspired take on medium, straight hair. Her hair is slicked-back with gel at the roots, but dry and straightened on the ends, so it still looks intentional... not greasy.
Pinned Back On One Side
Here's another way to play with a mid-length, by pinning back a section of hair on one side. Katy Perry was growing out her bangs here, but this would also work with a section of hair above one ear, or at the top of the head.
For a dressy Boho vibe, add a head chain like Vanessa Hudgens. This works best with a strict centre part. The lengths should be left air-dried and not too "done".
If your hair is long enough, pull it back into an adorable low ponytail like Kate Mara's. Dress it up with a sleek texture and a strong diagonal part. Oh, and make sure to wrap your elastic in hair.
January Jones offers another variation on Kate Mara's low ponytail: twist it up into a baby bun. It should stay at the nape of the neck, keeping the same smooth sleekness. Love!
