While us Canadians were relaxing over the long weekend, the Taylor Swift Awards—I mean the Billboard Music Awards!—happened on Sunday night in Las Vegas.
Here are the red carpet beauty looks:
Not too sure about those rubber band-like spaghetti straps, but otherwise, Charli is all kinds of stunning. Girl knows how to pose and understands what kind of hair and makeup suits her features. That means a rich red lip, a textured lid, pale skin against a mass of brushed-out brunette curls and then those incredible brows. On others, the eyes and lips might seem too heavy, but here, they're in perfect balance.
Oh! This might be my favourite Zendaya look yet! She looks so cute and fresh in the high, wavy ponytail—but the gelled, centre-parted front is that extra detail that gives it a fashion-forward spin. Skin is luminous, the colour palette is soft and natural... the only thing I don't love is the bottom lip liner. (Also: Is it wrong if I like her just a little bit less now that she's part of Taylor Swift's girl crew? Zendaya, I thought you were cooler than that.)
Kendall, you so pretty. I'm particularly enjoying the contrast of the pink lips against her warm, probably also spray-tanned skin. (And with her beauty, it barely matters that her forehead seems a half-shade darker than the rest of her T-zone.) The wet-look, baby bouffant hair is pretty great as well, and I'm so glad she didn't go too heavy with the eye makeup. Of course there are lashes—she IS a Kardashian, after all!—but they are in proper proportion and not overdone.
That is one fierce cat eye Hailee is rocking. I kinda love it with the youthful high ponytail (second one of the night!), plus rosy cheeks and matte lips. If I could change anything here, it would probably just be smoothing the pony out. I like the baby hairs framing her face, but there are perhaps a bit too many flyaways in the tail.
Did you notice Olivia's face shape trick? She's wearing oversized dangly circle earrings, which serve to de-emphasize the angles of her jawline. Very clever! I like seeing her hair down for once, though it's still styled sleek in her usual centre part. Makeup's not bad... heavier than I like it, but not bad.
Remember that Vogue cover Taylor did? Not with BFF Karlie Kloss, but the one back in 2012, where she wore her hair long and straight, with that big, fabulous hat. Now that was her Life Look. If I were her, I'd be doing some version of Boho chic always... not trying to be trendy with this helmet-like lob. (Don't get me wrong; on others, this hairstyle might be fine. On her, it's very '90s news anchor.) In general, I would also like to see fresher makeup, and I just don't get this new thing of having so much shadow under the eyes... it's making everyone look tired! Final not beauty-related thought: I haaated her white bell-bottom jumpsuit.
Wait—Rita has long hair again? When did this happen? I have to say, I like it heaps better than the pixie cut. (Although it would be nice to have it a little shorter than this, and styled a bit edgier. The long Hollywood waves are boring to me.) Nice to see her signature red lip again, with fairly low-key makeup everywhere else. (Low-key for Rita, that is.)
JLo's hair looks... expensive. You just know she invested tons of money and time to get this look, which is blonder than usual and very carefully Ombré'd. Also mega-layered and styled like curtains to reveal her face. My thoughts? I can appreciate the work that went into it, but it feels too contrived. You notice her hair before you notice her face, when I think it should always be the other way around. She shows no signs yet of letting up on the heavy base, extreme contouring, goopy gloss, super-smoky eyes, chiseled brows, etc. It's okay from afar, but up-close... eeks!
Now that we know they come from a syringe, I can't stop staring at Kylie's lips. To me, they don't look good and aren't even close to natural. I also find her hair too black, too solid... it lacks dimension. Probably because she's changed the colour so often. The good part is the eye makeup. She's the only one here to get the lower lid emphasis just right. Jennifer Lopez, take note!
Britney! So exciting that we get a rare red carpet sighting. And you know what? She's looking pretty good. (Futhermore, her body is looking really good... how has she had two children?!) I love her pink gloss and the chunky lashes are so much better than falsies. I always find her hair a shade or two too blonde for her skin tone.
Taraji P. Henson
I'd just tweak a few things here with Taraji. First, the curls. They need to be brushed out, not so piecey. Second, the eye makeup. Why does the sparkly champagne shadow have such a defined circular edge at the inner corners? Wouldn't it be better all blended? I would also trade the heavy false lashes for more defined brows. Her skin is in amazing condition.
Martha is the requisite model on this red carpet, and we might be seeing a lot more of her soon, since she's one of the newest Victoria's Secret Angels. She's definitely got "model hair" going on, contrasted with smoky eyes and a rosy brown lip.
It's Serayah's debut on this blog and she did very well, don't you think? I'm completely mesmerized by her skin, which is not only flawless but also seems to glow from within. Her pale pink lips contrast perfectly against her milk chocolate complexion, and I love that she just did simple black liner and defined lashes—heavy shadow would be way too distracting. Half-up hair keeps the focus on her face.
The last time we saw Stefanie, she was working a teen queen princessy vibe. Now, she's gone more sophisticated with a satiny red lip and an updo. I love the updo, which has just enough piecey bits falling out at the front. (I don't love her too-obvious highlights.) The touch of gold at the inner lower corners elevates the whole thing.
Danica looks a bit like a member of a bridal party instead of someone attending a hot red carpet event. (Not that she isn't still pretty... we just have higher style expectations here, is all.) The updo feels slightly dated, base seems uneven and the black in the waterlines is heavy. I also think a good brow lady could take her through brow rehab and make a huge transformation there.
Iggy... er, is this Iggy? Plastic surgery rumours are wildly circling following this latest appearance, so it looks like we know who's on deck for my next Before & After! I honestly can't tell if her nose is different from her appearance at the Kids' Choice Awards, but her lips sure do look inflated. At least the pink colour is great, and it matches her dip-dyed hair. Blush/bronzer seems too low, and I'm thinking maybe she should get bangs? Thoughts?
Speaking of cosmetic interventions... did you spot Mariah's wonky half-closed eye? Seems to be a relatively common and unfortunate side effect of Botox, if celebs of a certain age are any indication. (We recently saw it on Gwen Stefani and Uma Thurman, if you recall.) As for her styling, Mariah found her look in the early '00s and boy, is she sticking to it. Everything is dated and overdone, from the hair to the lashes to the blush to the lip gloss/liner... I could go on, but you know what I mean.
Chrissy comes last, because out of anyone here, she can do better! I just find this cray-cray contouring on top of a borderline too-light foundation so shocking—considering she's a model and all. And then there's the eye makeup. Those lashes need to be burned, and the heavy application of copper shimmer shadow just isn't flattering. She has gorge hair, but perhaps a bit too streaky now.
Who had your favourite (and least favourite) beauty look on this red carpet?
