It was another fab week in red carpet beauty, thanks to a handful of premieres and, of course, Comic-Con. (Oh, and the ESPYs—those pics are over here.) Get ready to look at a loooong list of celebs, topped by Ashley Madekwe, Paula Patton and Jessica Chastain.
These were the best celebrity beauty looks this week:
There's just one word for this: adorable! I've never seen Ashley look better—and for that matter, I can't remember ever seeing her hair down, either. Her retro Ombré waves are perfect with the graphic dress, and the curvy cat-eye flicks add just the right touch of fun, without feeling too literal. Well done!
Speaking of looking better than ever, I feel the same way about Paula—single life must be treating her very well! In the past, I always felt distracted by some too-heavy element of her makeup. But here, with everything pared back, you can appreciate just how gorgeous she is. Love her skin, flushed cheeks, defined lashes and YLOB ("your lips, only better") gloss.
Jessica got a haircut! I like it—the shoulder length feels much fresher than her long, awards season styles, and the angled cut quite suits her. The red lipstick really flatters her skin and hair, too. Just not sure she needs the false lashes or such drawn-on brows.
Here's the first of three Emma pics coming your way. I'm not into her hair (it's too blonde, yes?), but I love the lived-in look of this makeup. No harsh lines on the eyes, and the blush and lip colour look like they're coming from within.
Here, you can really see how the blonde is washing her out. But the braid is kind of cool (after a brief hiatus on the fishtail trend), and again, the makeup is very, very good. And yet, I still feel like a pop of colour somewhere would do wonders.
Gosh, I had no idea Emma's hair was so long now. Too long for her, I think, and the dark brow-light hair colour isn't doing it for me in this instance. But man, isn't that stained berry lip a dream?
If it weren't for the visible lip liner on her bottom lip, I'd say Lea is flawless! It's definitely one of her best red carpet looks—so simple and summery-pretty in loose, shiny, heathy hair, brow-skimming bangs, glowy skin and long lashes. Less is always more with Lea.
See what I mean? The makeup is a little heavier here, and I could live with the eyes but not the lips (eeks, so much liner!). Technically, her braided updo is pretty masterful, but those two matching prom tendrils have to go.
I've mentioned before how I don't love Rachel's new bob, but here it actually does look pretty cute on her—but would probably be cuter if the part were on the side, and the hair sweeping across her forehead. Makeup is restrained, as per usual, centring around a grey smoky eye that goes well with her dress.
I'm still loving Kate's new short cut, and how it brings out her small features. Her shadow is expertly applied, helping to extend her eyes horizontally, and the blush is seamless. That's why I can't understand the need for the unblended bottom lip liner—it strikes again!
Jennifer is looking rather Botoxed, but also really, really glam. She definitely pulls off the difficult light blonde hair colour, worn in classic side-parted long waves, and that blush and lip colour make my heart sing. It's just too bad her face seems so taut and pulled.
Another week, another Bella photo. And another example of her sporting a shimmery metallic golden colour as eyeliner. With her strawberry gold hair, I can't get enough! However, not crazy about the matte lips this time.
It's always great to see someone like Mia wearing a super-short pixie—and not letting it wear her. I like the delicate, understated makeup, but maybe a bit stronger brow or lashes would make this more red carpet-worthy.
Ah, I'm always so torn with Zendaya. On the one hand, I find her hair too piecey, her complexion too shimmery, her lip liner too obvious. And yet... there's still something about this. I love seeing her in long, sexy hair, and this light brown colour is wonderful on her. Also, the way she wears eyeshadow is mesmerizing.
Lily makes her Beauty Editor debut here, and I thought it was more interesting to show the look from the side—because that's where all the action is. Sure, this half-updo is a bit messy, but that's the point; it makes for such an interesting contrast against her dress. Love! Skin is fresh, with a touch of neutral shimmer around the eyes.
Phoebe, too, is appearing on this blog for the first time, and duck face aside, I love her look. Smooth, straight hair with a defined part looks groomed without a try-hard vibe. The focus of the subtle makeup is on her big green eyes, with black liner along the outer upper lash line, and natural lashes (hooray!).
Another newbie, Ivana is the vision of healthy natural beauty in her dewy skin and loose, soft, wavy hair. She might lose the false lashes, and reconsider her shade of brow pencil—see how the tails aren't quite a match?
Jaimie knows how to work her short black bob, and has the most beautiful eyes, but I can't decide on her false lashes. On the one hand, at least they're not the usual tacky, heavy, extra-long variety. They're short and spiky, which is kind of cool... but I still think au naturel would be better.
Wow, Molly has such interesting colouring! Her bright red hair and pale blue eyes are so, so pretty. I love how her lip and blush colours are in the same family. I think her skin could use a touch more perfecting, and her hair is lacking a style on the ends.
Yes, Maisie's brows could use a tidy. But I'm still drawn to her look, which is so unique. She is a great example of a round face being flattered by straight, side-parted, lob-length hair.
So close, Keke! When I saw the top pic, I was blown away by this hair and makeup look, and how the lipstick matches the dress exactly. But when I zoomed in, I was let down by the OTT false lashes.
I'm digging Bella's wavy bob, although the blonde perhaps washes her out a tad. She has nice skin, and the makeup is all soft—with the surprise of shimmery pink all the way around the eyes. Fun!
Let it be known that I am not a fan of Abigail's hair, at all. The blonde is too blonde, and I don't like the dark roots in this case; plus, it has that too long, obvious extensions look. But if you just focus on her skin and eye makeup, then... wow! She has to have one of the best complexions in Hollywood, and the gold smoky eyes are out of this world.
Marisa makes a rare red carpet appearance, and I think she looks (mostly) great. The updo looks effortless, and the loose pieces don't scream "prom." I like her makeup, with one exception: the green liner in the waterlines is too jarring, and should be a soft brown. And perhaps a lighter hand is needed on that shimmer shadow.
