Hot on the heels of the Golden Globes and People's Choice Awards comes yet another red carpet event for your beauty inspiration—the Critics' Choice Awards! They happened Sunday night in Santa Monica, honouring the best in film and television.
Gonna try something new today and break each look down according to what I love, versus what I'd change (where applicable).
What I love: Zoë's skin! Dewy, luminous, and doesn't even look like she's wearing foundation, in the best possible way. Also, her sheer coral lip colour, shaded eyelids and natural lashes. (She's so good about the latter. If Zoë ever wears falsies, I'll probably cry.) What I'd change: Really nothing, except maybe just brushing up the hairs on that one brow.
What I love: The subtle matchiness of January's silvery-blue eye makeup to her dress. Her skin has a wonderful matte freshness, and the muted coral lips and matching cheeks look great with her colouring. It's also nice to see her brows so full and dark, and her hair looks really elegant whisked up off her face, no earrings. What I'd change: Maybe just blending the upper lip liner in a bit more.
What I love: Emmy's eye makeup. I love the smudginess of the brown liner, the soft shimmer, and the way the black on the upper lids only follows the curve of her rounded eye shape. I kinda like that everything else is pretty and simple, from the shiny pink lips to the side-parted updo. What I'd change: You have to be looking hard to notice it, but her brow pencil could perhaps be more feathery at the tops of her brows.
What I love: America looks beachy! And sexy! I can't remember ever seeing her like this. I really like that she paired the tousled, voluminous hair with such a bare-faced makeup job. That's just how the Victoria's Secret models do it. What I'd change: Nothing—I can live with these false lashes.
What I love: It's the return of the Rosie I loved from the amfAR Gala! Her hair looks amazing slicked back like this, and her skin tone is (for once) not spray-tanned three shades darker. Her false lashes are much improved; I actually like the way their fluffiness counters the black liquid liner and her sculpted features. What I'd change: Nothing. Although it would be nice to see her experiment more with colour.
What I love: Alicia's lip colour! Isn't it the ultimate soft, stained, "your lips, only better" pink? The matching blush is also nice against her warm, medium skin. Finally, the hint of sparkle at the inner corners of her eyes adds a little somethin'-somethin'. What I'd change: I'm torn on this voluminous updo. Is it aging? I don't know. As usual, not a fan of the false lashes and the way they stick out at the outer corners.
What I love: The juxtaposition of Rachel's casual, textured, flipped-to-one-side lob against the dressy dress and makeup. She got stuck with some crap lighting, but her skin is still looking pretty amazing here! What I'd change: I've said it before—her hair colour. I think it's too blonde, and the rooty look is not flattering. I also find the shimmery red lipstick a bit harsh on her pale colouring, especially with the black eyeliner. You can see how her brow pencil is too red also, but I'm guessing it's the weird light.
What I love: The subtle eye makeup, and the general freshness. When you put a lot of makeup on Saoirse, it usually doesn't work. (With this one exception.) What I'd change: The half-up hairstyle feels a bit too casual. And I'd love to see her brows just a little more groomed.
What I love: Liv's big, genuine smile! And also, that her makeup isn't trying too hard. In a strawberry lipstick, silver eyeshadow and natural lashes, she looks fresh and pretty—it's the way a non-celeb person would do themselves up for a special occasion, with no need for false lashes, etc. Just tossing her shiny hair over one shoulder gives it a "style." What I'd change: I really can't think of anything I'd do differently here. Maybe just tucking those shorter pieces of hair under the main part.
Bryce Dallas Howard
What I love: These super-precise beauty looks are so good on Bryce. Her hair in particular is amazing here—both the style and the rich colour—and I love the concept of a dramatic eye with a matching peach lipstick. Her skin is also very flawless. What I'd change: The eyeshadow is so heavy on its own, I think the false lashes cheapen it. Her bottom lip liner could be softened, and her straight brows are reminding me of Jessica Chastain's thing (although not nearly as alarming, of course!).
What I love: Kate doesn't age! I know she probably dabbles in injectables now, but she looks super-cute in this high ponytail and light makeup. The soft bangs frame her face beautifully. What I'd change: Her face is slightly lighter than her neck and arms, so perhaps some bronzer or a darker foundation would help even things out.
What I love: The concept of an ethereal, loose braided updo is great, and never goes out of style. I'm also into Constance's juicy pink lips! What I'd change: There are so many long pieces hanging out of the updo—I think fewer and shorter ones would be better. The obviously false lashes and strong blush make this feel dated, not modern.
What I love: We can always count on Jennifer to bring casual California style to the red carpet. I am a big fan of her simple, side-swept, straight hair. A slight tan always works for her, as does low-key makeup. What I'd change: It could be the lighting, but these highlights surrounding her face are kinda chunky! Also, it looks like the makeup is too heavy on her cheeks. I'm wondering if softer brown liner wouldn't be better around her eyes.
What I love: Krysten has these gorgeous doe eyes, and the way she emphasized her lower lashes makes them stand out even more. I also like her naturally full, dark brows. What I'd change: Frizz serum needed! That seems to be an issue lately. I don't think she needed the false lashes. Lipstick's a bit patchy, but okay.
What I love: Hayden has really good skin and brows—and on that note, I always enjoy the pairing of dark brows with blonde hair. Her cheeks look nice and plump here, with seamless blush and a fantastic subtle highlight. What I'd change: The unblended bottom lip liner is bothering me, as are the extra-long false lashes. I feel like her hair could be more current. Less blonde, more warmth, and I think it's time to move on from the piecey, flat iron-textured lob.
What I love: Gina's dress is such a fun colour! And I like that she gave us red and matte lips for once, instead of her usual sheer pink gloss. What I'd change: Unfortunately, the hairstyle is way too stiff and tall. It doesn't work when her makeup is also incredibly heavy—too much blush, liner and those dingin' false lashes. Her hair and makeup are aging her, which is a real shame!
