Let the games begin! Last night's Golden Globes marked the first big red carpet event of the year—and set the stage for the 2017 awards season's most popular beauty trends.
Statement lips and fresh faces will never go out of style, but if these celebs are any indication, we'll be seeing a lot more pink eyeshadow, matchy-matchy makeup, ribbons and braids.
Here we go!
What I like: Priyanka's rich oxblood lips and soft, loose hair. This is the prettiest and most stylish I've ever seen her! What a long way from the prom looks she used to favour. Her skin looks really fresh, and there's a wonderful balance between her bold lips and metallic eyes. Even her brow game has improved, thanks to her new "fans." I love that she left her hair down to give the makeup a more relaxed vibe. What I'd change: Nothing.
Priyanka is wearing: Moisturizer • Eye cream • Foundation • Concealer and highlighter • Powder • Eyeshadow (soft copper and sand shimmer shades) • Eyeshadow in Gold Goddess • Eyeshadow (deep brown shade) • Lipstick in An Affair • Lipstick in Seduction
What I like: Michelle's fresh skin, bleached-blonde crop... and that black ribbon choker whimsically tied around her neck! Her gamine style was 100 percent on point here. I so appreciate the light touch on the makeup. There are no harsh lines, just long soft lashes, natural brows, glossy lips and flushed cheeks. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: The pearls in Janelle's beehive. So creative and fun! I appreciate that she didn't tame her frizz too much, as it helps the high, '60s-inspired style feel quite modern. Her skin looks radiant, and the dab of shine underneath each pupil is also genius. What I'd change: The brow-filling could be more feathery. And I don't understand the upper lip liner!
Janelle is wearing: Concealer in Deep • Eyeshadow in Nudes • Eyeliner in Espresso • Mascara in Intense Black • Brow powder in Rich Brown • Brow mascara in Rich Brown • Tinted lip balm in Taffy • Lipstick in Delicious
What I like: Emma's ethereal hair and makeup. Although I prefer her in stronger colours (like at Critics' Choice), the matching pink eyeshadow, blush and lipstick show off her delicate colouring. Her brows are expertly filled, with natural texture, and the loose chignon is ultra-romantic. What I'd change: Her skin looks a bit dry/powdery.
What I like: Sienna's cat eyes and messy ponytail. We know from the 2015 Oscars that heavy makeup doesn't really work on her, so I support this fresh, casual look. It's elevated by black cat eyes, pale eyeshadow, soft lashes and textured brows. It's also kinda nice to see healthy matte skin after all the strobing mania! What I'd change: Nothing.
Sienna is wearing: Serum • Foundation • Contour • Powder • Blush (as eyeshadow in the pale and taupe shades) • Eyeliner in Hyperblack • Waterproof mascara in Noir • Brow pencil in Blond Clair • Lip balm • Lip crayon in Nude
What I like: Jessica's understated elegance. Okay, it's not as exciting as that blue liner, but I still love this tidy updo and peachy-pink makeup. Her skin looks incredible (and seemingly foundation-free!), and I like that she left her brows bare, relying on black winged liner to enhance her eyes. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Kerry's blackberry lipstick in a rounded shape. Dark lips are so amazing on her! Long, straight hair in a deep side part adds even more drama. Plus, her skin looks super-flawless. What I'd change: The false lashes are disappointing, but most of all, I dislike these tadpole brows! They've been tweezed too high under the tails and need more filler there to even them out.
Kerry is wearing: Moisturizer • Foundation in Cocoa • Concealer • Blush in Flushed • Eyeshadow in Mink Brown • Eyeliner in Cosmic Black • False lashes • Mascara in Carbon Black • Brow pencil in Dark Brown • Lip balm • Lipstick in Glam 335 • Lip crayon in Deep Plum
What I like: Lily's pink eyeshadow and red lipstick combo. I love how the bold mouth makes this look less predictable and sweet. As usual, her brows frame her face, allowing her to keep the lashes super-soft. Notice the tiny braid in her updo. What I'd change: I'm not crazy about this hairstyle on her. I think something less "done" would go better with the artistic makeup.
Lily is wearing: Foundation in 110 Ivoire C • Concealer in Ivoire • Blush in Aplum (as blush and eyeshadow) • Lip pencil in Natural Mauve (as eyeshadow) • Eyeshadow in Pink Pearls • Mascara in Black • Brow pencil in Neutral Brown • Lipstick in Souvenir
What I like: Ruth's shimmering purple shadow. I love that one half reflects the light, and the other tapers into a cool cat-eye shape that enhances her almond eyes. The finger waves are such a great way to dress up short hair. What I'd change: The contour under her cheeks is a fraction too intense.
Ruth is wearing: Serum • Eye serum • Foundation in 50 Beige • Foundation in 50 Beige (as contour) • Eyeshadow in New Moon • Eyeshadow in Tissé Cambon (burgundy shade) • Eyeliner in Ambre • Lip balm • Lip crayon in Nude • Lip colour in Luxuriant
What I like: Emily's matchy orange eyeshadow and coral lipstick. With her yellow dress, they give her such a warm, sunny vibe. The blending, as well as the skin, brow and lash details, are top-notch. This is also one of the most realistic-looking faux bobs I've ever seen! What I'd change: Nothing.
Emily is wearing: Foundation in 70 Beige • Highlighter in Light Medium • Powder in 30 Naturel • Blush in Élégance • Bronzer • Highlighter • Eyeliner in Mat Taupe • Eyeshadow in Convoitise • Eyeshadow in Codes Élégants • Eyeshadow in Codes Subtils • Mascara in Noir • Brow pencil in Brun Cendré • Lip liner in Natural • Lipstick in Sari Doré
What I like: Amy's relaxed glamour. I love how her loose hair and glowy makeup help to dress down the strapless sequins. The sheer peach lips compliment her hair colour, and she's wearing a metallic liner along her lower lash lines (as usual). The centre part adds just enough polish to the long hair look. What I'd change: Nothing.
Amy is wearing: Lip gloss in Coco
What I like: Thandie's (insanely) perfect skin and mauvey makeup. There's black liner hugging the curve of her upper lids, but otherwise everything is soft and sheer. This is another example of how we're moving away from obviously filled-in brows. If you look closely, you can see how the darkened upper edge of the eyeshadow helps close up her lid space—this is a trick she does a lot! What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Felicity's long curtain bangs. It's too bad they obscure most of her eye makeup, but I love how they make her updo look so effortless. The silvery charcoal keeps the eye makeup from feeling heavy, and I love her pouty lips in baby pink. What I'd change: Nothing.
Felicity is wearing: Lipstick in Lychee
What I like: Zoë's fresh skin and stained pink lips. She wore my absolute favourite dress of the night, but since it was so frilly and colourful, a clean makeup look made the most sense. This shows off her beautiful complexion, and I like that she didn't even go bold on the lips or lashes. What I'd change: If Zoë can't grow out her brows, she would be a great candidate for microblading to correct their rounded shape.
What I like: Natalie's half-up '60s hair, and the combination of pink lipstick with a yellow dress. There was a risk this would come across too retro, but it really works! There's a bit of height to the hairstyle, but not too much, and the makeup feels fresh, especially with the glossy lip finish. Rather than falsies, she's wearing lots of mascara to get a chunky lash look. And do I detect a flash of chartreuse on her eyelids? What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Blake's sleek updo. She is so well-known for her glorious mane of hair, but it's refreshing to see her with a completely different look—and one that goes perfectly with the glamazon dress. Her makeup stayed fairly low-key, centering around a pretty pink lip and fluffy lashes. What I'd change: I like that she kept her brows soft, but Blake is another one who would benefit from a shape correction.
Blake is wearing: Moisturizer • Foundation in Creamy Natural • Foundation in Creamy Natural (as concealer) • Illuminator in Golden • Blush (coral and pink shades) • Eyeshadow in Nude Intense • Lash primer • Mascara • Lip colour in Spicy Blush
What I like: Hailee's lilac eyeshadow. The matchy-matchy trend continues! While the colour may be stereotypically feminine, the application is modern—it's all the way around the lids and almost to the brows, with highlighter at the inner corners. Peachy-pink lips break up the cool colour palette. The white waterlines were tastefully done. What I'd change: Nothing. (The hair's boring, but necessary with the princess dress.)
Hailee is wearing: Moisturizer • Primer • Eye and lip primer • Foundation in 3.5 (forehead, chin, sides of nose and under eyes) • Foundation in 4.5 (cheeks) • Bronzer in 100 • Bronzer in 400 • Illuminator in 2 and 11 • Highlighter • Setting spray • Eyeshadow in 8, 10 and 12 • Mascara • Tinted lip balm in 1 • Lipstick in 104 Skin
What I like: Brie's classic Hollywood glamour. Red lips and retro waves are a red carpet look we've seen time and time again, but somehow, her version still seems fresh. Perhaps it's that we don't usually see her in red? Her hair looks very touchable, skin is flawless, and I like her natural lashes and brow fans. What I'd change: The lipstick is caking a bit. Happens to the best of us!
What I like: Naomi's gleaming skin. Good Lord! How is it possible that she is 46 years old and keeps getting better with age??? Besides her gorgeous glow, I like the sleek, straight hair, soft brows and thick fringe of upper lashes. Normally I'm not a fan of coloured contacts, but hers make this look even more enchanting. What I'd change: She's doing the same upper lip liner thing as Janelle Monáe. Why?!
What I like: Anna's controlled, side-parted waves. I like her hair down with this dress, but it's still off the face, to show off her fine features and flawless skin. The berry lips are pretty, and this is one of the better brow-filling jobs of the night. What I'd change: I feel like I've seen this makeup on her many times before.
What I like: Reese's sparkly eyes. She's got shades of gold, purple and golden brown on her lids for a layered look that compliments all the yellow happening elsewhere. (I love Reese in yellow dresses!) The lipstick in a cooler pink tone adds punch. I also like her side-swept bangs, which give the updo a little more edge. What I'd change: Nothing.
Reese is wearing: Face mist • Foundation • Illuminator in Brilliance • Eyeliner in Aqua XL ME-42 • Eyeshadow in Triton • Eyeshadow in Monte Carlo • Liquid liner in Plum Desire • Liquid liner in Gilded Brown
What I like: Finally, Chrissy is not wearing muddy colours! I love seeing her in a scarlet lip, with fresh skin sans heavy contouring. Her complexion really looks incredible here, and the rosy cheeks are so cute. She also went more natural on the eyes, and tied her hair back into a slick pony. More of this, please! What I'd change: Nothing.
Chrissy is wearing: Face oil • Moisturizer • Foundation • Concealer • Highlighter in Rose Gold • Highlighter in Topaz, Champagne Pop and Rose Gold • Blush in Wild Honey, Songbird and Nightingale • Lip liner in Nougat • Lip gloss in Raspberry and Papaya
What I like: The smudgy blue liner under Mandy's eyes. I can't recall ever seeing her in such a bold eye makeup look—it's a nice change! The shimmery pink shadow and pale pink lipstick add even more colour play. I also like her centre-parted hair, tucked behind both ears. What I'd change: The lashes cheapen it. Also, the pink shadow could be better blended.
What I like: Riley's creamy red lipstick. With fluffy lashes, barely-there shadow and a slightly textured updo, she definitely played it safe—but still looks so interesting and luminous. What I'd change: I'm not crazy about Riley as a blonde; this reddish tone suited her better.
What I like: Naomie's pink lip gloss and smoky eyes. Usually, her beauty looks are very low-key, but she looks really pretty and glam here. Her skin is flawless! What I'd change: I'm disappointed to see these too-long false lashes on her—I always used to admire that she wore her lashes au naturel. I also think her waves are too stiff and need brushing out.
What I like: Sofia's matchy burgundy shadow and lipstick. I especially like that colour for her eyes; it looks good all smudgy along her lower lash lines. I'm also coming around to appreciating her full brows, even though they could use some tidying. They're youthful! What I'd change: As usual, this could use a lighter hand and fresher colour palette overall. I wish she'd lose the false lashes and heavy lipstick texture.
What I like: Jessica's super-sleek braided bun. Not too many people can wear their hair so tight to the head and look this gorgeous! It also shows off her insanely perfect complexion. I'm glad she's kept up with the softer brows, and a berry lip is always great on her. What I'd change: Nothing.
Evan Rachel Wood
What I like: Evan's boyish beauty look. So great with her tux! The voluminous wave is perfect in her short hair, and the shimmery silver shadow adds a luxe touch without feeling overdone. I like the berry lip and her fresh skin, too. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Gina's fresh skin and wavy, side-parted lob. I love these soft pink tones on her, and the shimmery white around her eyes picks up the bright hue of her teeth. Her brows have great texture. What I'd change: The lashes are way too cray.
What I like: Gillian's soft, beachy beauty. Sure, she looks like she hasn't avoided the sun in the past—but this hair and makeup enhances that, instead of attempting to hide. We can see her real skin texture, dressed up with gold smoky shadow that matches her neckline and hair. Her brows and lashes look great, and this is the lip texture Sofia Vergara should be aiming for! What I'd change: Nothing.
Tracee Ellis Ross
What I like: Teresa's matte red lips and chunky lashes. I admire how she always looks so natural and comfortable on the red carpet! The half-up curly hair is flattering, and she has great skin and brows. I like that she left her lids bare, except for black liner along the upper lash lines to emphasize her rounded eye shape. What I'd change: Nothing.
Tracee is wearing: Moisturizer • Face oil • Primer • Eye cream • Brightening primer • Foundation • Powder • Illuminator in Rose • Blush (first and fourth colours) • Eyeshadow in Nude Intense • Eyeliner in Black • Lash primer • Mascara in Carbon Black • Brow pomade • Lip balm • Lip colour in Orange Envy • Lip colour in DIY Red
What I like: Drew's sexy, bedhead hair. Its caramel tone is super-pretty with her skin, and also echoed in the lip colour. She's another one who is bulking up her brow hairs with mascara instead of pencil (which I support fully!). What I'd change: Bottom false lashes? Drew, you're better than that. I also feel she could chop off a few inches of hair for a more current look.
What I like: Kristen's blonde pixie. Okay, she is reminding me of Maria from 'The Sound of Music,' but it's still very cute. I like the natural approach to makeup here as well; the black cat eye is the one statement that plays up the '60s vibes of the haircut. What I'd change: Some clear lip gloss might make this feel a little more special.
What I like: Teresa's red lipstick and low bun. I love this concept with the velvet dress and her ultra-pale, matte skin. What I'd change: Unfortunately, the lashes and brows let this down. I wish both were less obviously fake.
What I like: Maisie's big brows (they're so similar to Lily Collins'!) and lined, shimmery eyes. She has braces now, so it makes sense that she downplayed her mouth. Her skin is flawless. What I'd change: I think the barrette, earrings and loose tendrils make this too busy; I also dislike her choice of false lashes. A sleek bob would be more chic.
What I like: Nicole's metallic eyeshadow—notice how everyone's putting it under the eyes now—and soft pink lipstick. Now that she's committed to blonde instead of red (likely because of greys), these cool tones work well. Her brows are the fullest I've seen them, and at least her false lashes aren't stiff. What I'd change: I think the hair is too contrived and ages her. It looked so much better loose, straight and mid-length at the 2015 Oscars.
Nicole is wearing: Moisturizer • Eye cream • Foundation • Under-eye concealer • Concealer • Contour and highlighter • Blush in Moon Beach • Blush in Love Glow • Eyeshadow in The Rock Chick (molten pop shade) • Eyeshadow in The Uptown Girl (prime and enhance shade) • Eyeliner in Veruschka Mink • Eyeliner in Sophia • Mascara in Glossy Black • Brow mascara in Linda • Brow pencil in Grace K • Lipstick in Kidman's Kiss
What I like: Kristen's voluminous blonde lob. It looks soft and touchable. What I'd change: The makeup seems quite heavy. I'd love to see her with fresher eyes and sheer, glossy lips—no false lashes or liners. Her cheeks look kinda wooden, possibly from the blush or injections or both.
What I like: Sarah's creamy, baby pink lipstick and matching blush. I also like her dark, straight brows and natural lashes. What I'd change: I'm still not a fan of the dark roots and light blonde highlights.
Sarah Jessica Parker
What I like: Sarah's signature shimmery smoky eyes are still working well for her. I've always liked the look of smudgy shadow with jet black waterlines. What I'd change: I admire the effort, but... I'm just not into the braid halo.
What I like: Olivia actually looked pretty good from afar, and she gets some points for creativity with this Spanish-inspired get-up. Her hairstyle is a better version of SJP's, and her brows are excellent. What I'd change: I think you can channel a flamenco dancer without wearing ALL the eyeshadow and aggressively overlining your lips. It's just too much!
Olivia is wearing: Moisturizer • Primer • Foundation • Concealer • Contour • Illuminator in Ice and Golden • Eyeshadow in Boudoir Charme • Liquid liner in Black Party • Lash primer • Mascara • Brow pomade • Lip colour in Taupeless • Lip colour in Nude Star
What I like: For once, Carrie's hair! The blonde isn't too light for her skin tone, and I like the natural straight texture and collarbone-grazing length. What I'd change: Carrie is a pretty lady, so why does she cling to the drawn-on sperm brows, heavy eyeshadow and ridiculously fake-looking lashes? One of the world's great beauty mysteries. She does acknowledge more recent trends with the dab of highlighter on her nose and chin... but that would've been better on her cheeks.
