The annual Billboard Music Awards took place this week, honouring the musicians behind the most popular songs of the year. Meanwhile, on the red carpet, the beauty was all about a bold statement. Keep scrolling for lots of smoky eyes, long lashes and pops of shimmer...

Hailee Steinfeld

What I like: Hailee's impeccably blended smoky eyes! They're framed by au naturel brows and long lashes. (Notice how her lower lashes aren't emphasized at all.) Lips are nude to balance things out, with her hair neatly gelled off the face. After so much dewiness, the matte skin feels refreshing. What I'd change: Nothing.

Rita Ora

What I like: Rita's grey shadow with silvery inner corner highlights. Like Hailee, she went with long lashes, nude lips and an off-the-face hairstyle—I like this softness on her! I'm also pleased with the lash texture. Not quite sure what's going on with the hairstyle; is it a faux bob or tucked into her collar? What I'd change: I prefer more feathery brows... and lips sans filler. I'm not the only one who noticed her face looks different lately.

Olivia Munn

What I like: Olivia's voluminous wavy lob with a deep side part. I also really like the pinky-burgundy tones under her eyes, that match her lipstick, blush and the flowers on her dress. What I'd change: The lip liner along her bottom lip is supposed to create the illusion of fuller lips, and it does—but I don't get why she needs it. Her lips are already plump from injections!

Olivia is wearing: Blush in Rouge Profond • Blush in Vibration • Eyeshadow in Désert Rouge • Eyeshadow in Bronze Antique

Halsey

What I like: Halsey's glossy lips and pink eyeshadow. As usual, her sprinkling of freckles makes everything cuter and more natural-looking. She looks really, REALLY good with a shaved head. What I'd change: Nothing. (The false lashes could be a little better, but I think they generally work in this instance.)

Vanessa Hudgens

What I like: Vanessa's flippy bob. I've always loved bobs and lobs on her; she looks super-adorable with this length. I'm a fan of the makeup concept, too. The pink eyeshadow is on trend but not heavy, with lovely soft lashes and shiny nude lips. What I'd change: It's too bad the foundation is so obvious and taking the dimension out of her features. I think she could get away with less coverage, but could use more powder.

Vanessa is wearing: Illuminator in Original • Eyeshadow in You Had Me at Merlot • Eyeshadow in Oh So Pink

Alexandra Daddario

What I like: Alexandra's orange-red lipstick, which matches the intensity of her pale blue eyes. With her hair slicked back and her super-pale skin, it's all very striking. It's also much edgier than the looks we've seen on her in the past. What I'd change: The black waterlines are a bit harsh, but okay.

Alexandra is wearing: Face mist • Lip balmFoundation mixed with highlighter in AuraContourBlush in X-RatedHighlighter in Now's the Time • Eyeshadow in Chem Trail • Eyeshadow in SuspectEyelinerMascaraLipstick in Tilt

Maia Mitchell

What I like: Maia's stained berry lips and high bun, to show off her beautiful skin. She left her brows untouched, which I prefer to overdone ones. What I'd change: I don't like these heavy false lashes.

Madison Beer

What I like: Madison's blue and gold eyeshadow combo. It's matchy to her dress and jewellery, but I think it works since the bare lips and long hair are casual. What I'd change: Her lashes are a tad clumpy.

Kate Beckinsale

What I like: Kate's surprise of metallic blue and gold eyeliners along her upper lash lines. What a great change from her usual muddy browns! I love the volume in her ponytail as well. What I'd change: I think her brows could be filled in a bit more (or microbladed) to define her face. I do wish she'd ease up on the cheek filler.

Camila Cabello

What I like: Camila's long bangs. They draw attention to her eyes and aren't too perfect, which gives her a sultry vibe. The dusting of gold at her inner corners is also great. What I'd change: I think her cut could be refined a little more, with a thicker bang and better parting.

Lea Michele

What I like: Lea's playful top knot. Her brows look good here as well. What I'd change: I never like it when she goes so heavy on the lashes; this pair is too overpowering. It also appears she's overdoing the injections—both in her lips and cheeks. Speaking of cheeks, that contour powder is doing her texture no favours.

Noah Cyrus

What I like: Noah's flushed cheeks and muted "your lips, only better" lip colour. The smoky eyes are also impressive, especially with the little dabs of glitter under each iris. What I'd change: I'm still not a fan of the harsh black hair, but at least it's softer here than at Kids' Choice.

Ashley Tisdale

What I like: Ashley's sparkly blue and purple shadow. So fun and unexpected! I appreciate that she didn't go crazy on the lashes, and kept the rest of the makeup neutral. What I'd change: Although brassy hair isn't always "bad", I find this too orange. I also think the length and styling are dated; a shorter length with more movement would be fresher.

Nicole Scherzinger

What I like: Nicole's eyeshadow, I guess? I'd wear that champagne shimmer (although not in that shape!). What I'd change: This is a tough one, because of all the cosmetic work. It would be less mask-like if she ditched the heavy lip gloss and over-the-top lashes. Stronger brows would frame her face better and look more youthful.
