MTV's annual Video Music Awards (a.k.a. the VMAs) brings one of the best red carpets for beauty risk-taking!
This year's celeb attendees proved that matchy-matchy makeup is here to stay, pulling bold eyeshadow hues straight from their outfits. They also experimented with cool cat eyes, vampy lips, and... wait for it... the unibrow!
Here are the must-see beauty close-ups from the night:
What I like: Paris' reverse smokies! Above the eyes, it's all bare (except for mascara), but underneath, the black waterlines seamlessly blend into a bold, emerald-green shadow. The rest of the makeup has an understated rosy glow—much better than the brown tones she wore at Teen Choice. I'm also glad to see her back with light hair, even if she did steal Miley Cyrus' two-toned look. The brown was fine, but blonde is "wow!" What I'd change: I might just tidy up in between the brows... or not. I think the rumoured unibrow trend could actually be happening (more evidence in a sec)!
What I like: Olivia's vampy lips, which are putting me in the mood for fall! I love that this colour is less pinky and less predictable than the typical berries. It goes perfectly with subtly rose-flushed cheeks, long lashes and nude eyes. (There are actually FOUR different shades on there... imagine how many Patrick Ta uses for a shadow-focused look!) I also love the centre-parted, mid-length waves with fine highlights. What I'd change: Nothing.
Olivia is wearing:Contour in Bronzing • Blush in Rouge Profond • Blush in Vibration • Eyeshadow in Sable (as both eyeshadow and highlighter) • Eyeshadow in Memory • Eyeshadow in Road Movie • Eyeshadow in Bronze Antique • Eyeshadow in Beat • Mascara in Noir • Individual lashes • Brow pencil • Lipstick in Ultraberry • Lip liner in Seduction
What I like: Vanessa's unexpected red eyeliner. It's not only a daring colour choice, but also application—all the way around the eyes and then out in dramatic flicks. Oh, and there are also real, red Swarovski crystals along her upper lash lines! Lips are neutral (but not pale), lashes are fluffy, and the just-out-of-shower hair is the perfect casual counterpoint. What I'd change: The blush is a bit strong/muddy.
Vanessa is wearing: Moisturizer • Primer • Foundation in 18 Pecan • Concealer • Powder • Illuminating powder in Golden Hour • Blush in Flush • Blush in The Confession • Highlighter • Eyeliner in Rouge Louboutin • Mascara • Lip liner in Iconic Nude • Lipstick in Fury Matte • Lipstick in Vibrant Metal
What I like: Hailey's no-makeup makeup. Funny how the less she wears, the more I appreciate her stunning features. (Not to mention her flawless complexion!) This look is all about long lashes—no eyeliner—and a creamy mauve lip. Notice how her hair isn't too perfect. The texture is smooth, but the part is messy, and it's casually tucked behind her ears. Love! What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Hailee's peachy lips and cheeks. (You know me, can't resist an orange!) On most people, these runway-inspired cat eyes might be too much, but she pulls them off beautifully. I don't know if this is her real hair or extensions, but the extra-long length adds another layer of drama. What I'd change: The skin finish is a perhaps a fraction too yellow-toned and powdery.
Hailee is wearing: Foundation in Cashew and Linen • Concealer (under eyes) • Concealer (rest of face and in eye crease) • Bronzer • Blush in Lush Nectarine • Eyeshadow in Caramel • Eyeshadow in Tuxedo • False lashes • Mascara in Black Onyx • Brow powder in Ash • Brow mascara in Brunette • Lip liner in Natural Lips • Lipstick in Milky Way
What I like: Demi's gorgeous skin! Seriously, she has one of the most perfect complexions I've ever seen on the red carpet. I like that we can see a few freckles, and this lip gloss is pretty on her. What I'd change: Although the volume is impressive,I find the waves in her hair very dated. I'd also prefer more natural brows. Apparently, she's not wearing lip liner, so the ring-around-the-lips is probably just a shadow!
Demi is wearing: Serum • Eye cream • Moisturizer • Primer • Foundation in 003 • Foundation in Syracuse (outer edges of face) • Concealer • Contour • Bronzer • Highlighter in Opal • Blush • Powder • Eyeliner in Blacquer 42 • Eyeshadow • False lashes • Brow pencil in Universal Brown • Lip mask • Lipstick in Honeybun • Lip gloss in Park Ave Princess
What I like: Lorde's lilac eyeshadow! Like Vanessa Hudgens, she made a matchy-matchy statement (her dress was the same hue), and I just love the soft diffusion of colour. A hint of pink on the lips, textured brows and long lashes complete the look. Her half-up lob is adorable, too! What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Yara's glimmering gold shadow—yet another example of matching eye makeup to an outfit (and jewellery). I also love the two textures in her hair. Near the roots, it's all sleek and close to the head, while the ends are fluffy and voluminous. Her skin is impossibly glowy, but keep in mind she's only 17! What I'd change: Nothing. She's actually rocking this unibrow!
What I like: Mena's loose, romantic updo. We usually see her in sharper shapes, so this hairstyle is such a pretty change! I'm also into the matte, purplish lips and sculpted, silvery eyes (sans false lashes). She has great skin! What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: No wonder Jasmine's nickname is "Golden Barbie!" She has such a unique look, I can't stop staring. The makeup is actually quite simple. The sheer coppery shimmer all over the lids matches her tawny lips, and both are framed by full brows and soft lashes. Once again, we're seeing more casual hair with a glam dress. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Alessandra's high ponytail. Since she's wearing an extremely busy, structured dress with a high collar, the hair makes it playful—not so serious. The makeup is also very fresh, with matte rose lips, subtle contouring and flirty cat eyes. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Pink's natural skin and glossy lips. The eye makeup is understated, too, with what look like bleached brows—a smart move when you don't have a lot of hair to work with. What I'd change: Is that one longer piece of hair deliberate or did it fall out of her style? Either way, not feeling this cut!
What I like: Mel's edgy undercut and warm-toned hair suit her perfectly. With such an attention-grabbing dress, I think she was smart to avoid colour in her makeup. What I'd change: Her brows are very drawn-on... I think she'd be a great candidate for microblading!
What I like: I'm struggling here, but I suppose Katy's lipstick colour is okay. Application is another story, however! What I'd change: So she was always into heavy makeup, but it's become even heavier since she cut all her hair off. There is so much happening here, I don't even know where to begin! It's very '80s, but not in a good way. Needless to say, I want to chase after her with a makeup wipe.
Katy is wearing: Foundation in Creamy Natural • Eyeshadow in Jewels • Eyeshadow in Goldens • Eyeliner in Black Onyx • Mascara in Very Black • Brow powder in Rich Brown • Lip liner in Clear • Lipstick in Gelebrity
What I like: I can give Nicki's two-toned hair some points for creativity. On one side of her part is blonde, and the other side is pink. What I'd change: She was looking so good at this same event last year, I don't know what happened! But I do know I'm adding her to my list of Before & After candidates. (Something's different with the nose, I think!) The makeup is not helping her look any less plastic: the skin finish is incredibly heavy, the brows are completely drawn-on, and the lashes are crazy-town!
