Editor's Picks: 7 of the Best Body Scrubs with Natural Ingredients

Because dry, scaly legs are never a good look.

Exfoliating isn't just for your face!

Your body needs it, too, especially if you're dealing with dryness, rough patches... or even scales (in Canada, it's a thing). Unless you remove that surface dead skin, any moisturizer you put on top won't be able to do its job properly.

That's where body scrubs come in. While I'm no fan of grainy things above the neck (I'm an acids girl for life), they're perfect for buffing the legs, knees, feet, arms and elbows. Bonus: Some of them even replace the need for body lotion, since they leave a light coating of oil behind.

So how do you choose the best one? Here's what I look for:

  • Natural ingredients and natural fragrance (or fragrance-free)
  • Petroleum/mineral oil-free
  • Silicone-fee
  • Sulfate-free
  • Paraben-free

I also try to avoid or limit polyunsaturated oils (PUFAs) since they're so prone to rancidity. When that's not possible, I just make sure no residue is left on my skin, and use up the jar quickly. For more on how I check skincare ingredients, see here!

Herbivore Coco Rose Coconut Oil Body Polish

✓Natural ✓Petroleum-free ✓Silicone-free ✓Sulfate-free ✓Paraben-free Low PUFA

Herbivore Coco Rose Coconut Oil Body Polish.

Herbivore Coco Rose Coconut Oil Body Polish is a densely-packed sugar scrub with a pretty pink tint and subtle scent (thanks to Moroccan rose absolute). You know how some scrubs have a puddle of oil at the top after the first use? That doesn't happen here—this jar is chock-full of sugar! Afterwards, your skin will feel soft but not oily at all. You could also use this as a lip scrub!

Indie Lee Coconut Citrus Scrub

✓Natural ✓Petroleum-free ✓Silicone-free ✓Sulfate-free ✓Paraben-free PUFA-free

Indie Lee Coconut Citrus Scrub.

Indie Lee Coconut Citrus Scrub is also a sugar-based scrub, but with a higher concentration of oil—so it could definitely replace your body moisturizer. The ingredients list couldn't be more simple (or perfect), like something you could've whipped up in your own kitchen. If you're a citrus lover, you'll adore the super-lemony fresh scent. To learn more about this amazing brand, read my interview with Indie here.

Odacité Invigorative Jasmine-Mimosa Body Scrub

✓Natural ✓Petroleum-free ✓Silicone-free ✓Sulfate-free ✓Paraben-free PUFA-free

Odacité Invigorative Jasmine Mimosa Body Scrub.

Odacité Invigorative Jasmine Mimosa Body Scrub may look like a brown sugar or coffee scrub, but it's not—it's actually exfoliating with finely crushed walnut shell powder. So the texture is more fluffy, but it also leaves your skin incredibly smooth... perhaps the smoothest of all! Since it's in a base of gentle cleansing agents and aloe vera (not oil), it leaves behind no residue whatsoever.

Kopari Coconut Crush Scrub

✓Natural ✓Petroleum-free ✓Silicone-free ✓Sulfate-free ✓Paraben-free ✓Low PUFA

Kopari Coconut Crush Scrub.

Okay, Kopari Coconut Crush Scrub may not look the prettiest (I'm guessing that's why they didn't go for clear jars). But that's because of the brown sugar and coconut shell powder, in an oil and beeswax base. This is one of the gentler scrub options, and again, it could replace your need for body oil. The sugary, coconut milk scent will make you want to eat it! (But please don't.) In case you missed it, I reviewed this brand over here.

Jealous Coconut + Coffee Body Scrub

✓Natural ✓Petroleum-free ✓Silicone-free ✓Sulfate-free ✓Paraben-free ✓PUFA-free

Jealous Coconut + Coffee Body Scrub.

Jealous Coconut + Coffee Body Scrub is, quite simply, the perfect coffee scrub. Although there's sugar and salt in here, it's the coffee grounds that are doing the exfoliating—and if you leave them on for the recommended five to 10 minutes, they may even have a slight tightening effect on cellulite. If you hate oily scrubs, this is the one for you; it's the "driest" of the bunch. Oh, and the company is Canadian!

Where to buy: Jealous Body

Ingredients: Coffee canephora (robusta coffee) beans; Cocos nucifera (coconut oil); Sucrose (raw brown sugar); Sodium chloride (sea salt); Tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E).

basd Coffee Body Scrub

✓Natural ✓Petroleum-free ✓Silicone-free ✓Sulfate-free ✓Paraben-free ✓Low PUFA

basd Coffee Body Scrub.

Another coffee-based scrub, also made in Canada, is basd Coffee Body Scrub. (And it's in a bag, too—our country is starting a trend here!) This one is a little more "wet," thanks to oil and water in the formula. It comes in two scents, Indulgent creme Brûlée and Invigorating Mint; I've got the latter and it definitely lives up to its name!

Where to buy: Credo Beautybasd

Ingredients: organic ground coffee, organic sweet almond oil, purified water, sea salt, organic coconut sugar, vitamin e oil, organic orange essential oil, vanilla fragrance

Tata Harper Smoothing Body Scrub

✓Natural ✓Petroleum-free ✓Silicone-free ✓Sulfate-free ✓Paraben-free

Tata Harper Smoothing Body Scrub.

Since the brand's philosophy is "the more ingredients, the better," Tata Harper Smoothing Body Scrub is full of sugar, salt, crushed apricot seeds and tons of oils. It smells like flowers, and who can resist the brand's signature green glass packaging?! It doesn't leave you greasy, but because there's sunflower and argan oil in here (PUFAs), I just make sure I thoroughly remove it from my skin.

Body Scrub Application Tips

The best natural body scrubs to try now.

I'll leave you with a few quick tips to get the most out of your body scrub!

  • Step 1: Jump in the shower or bath first, for about five minutes to soften your skin. This will make the dead skin easier to remove. You can use your usual body wash or soap at this time.
  • Step 2: Turn off the water and pat your skin dry before applying the scrub. This will ensure the salt and sugar granules don't melt before they have a chance to work!
  • Step 3: Gently massage the product in circular motions, paying extra attention to spots like the knees and elbows. Optional: If it's a coffee scrub, leave it on for up to 10 minutes to get the full tightening benefit of the caffeine.
  • Step 4: Rinse with warm water.
  • Keep in mind: Avoid shaving on the days you use a body scrub, and never scrub skin that is irritated in any way. Otherwise, once or twice a week is a good frequency to aim for!
