This year's Met Gala was the most dramatic one we've seen yet!
With a theme centred around the Catholic church and its influence on fashion, celebs walked the red carpet in ornate crowns, veils, headpieces and halos. Just like Renaissance paintings come to life!
However, not everyone got the religious memo, so let's take a look at the biggest hits and misses from the night.
What I like: Lily's bejewelled eye makeup (including that single tear!) as well as the exaggerated luminous quality of her skin. The purplish lip stain balances her shaded lids and signature bold brows. And of course, the spiky crown adds the perfect finishing touch! What I'd change: Nothing.
Lily is wearing: Serum • Foundation in 110 Ivoire C • Concealer in Ivoire • Powder in Ecru Light • Highlighter in Shimmering Buff (on face and body) • Highlighter in Champagne Glow (on body) • Contour in Ivoire • Eyeshadow in Smokey Brown • Mascara in Excessive Black • Eyeshadow in Volcano • Brow gel in Transparent • Lip gloss in Purple Onyx
What I like: Kate's bright pink blush, matching lip colour, and soft lashes (they're actually individual falsies, and so good). With the pearl-trimmed veil, she looks positively angelic! I'm not usually a fan of brow powder—I'd rather see the individual hairs—but I think it works in this theatrical context. What I'd change: I'd rather a more natural highlight above her Cupid's bow (i.e. not gold shimmer).
Kate is wearing: Face mask • Eye mask • Moisturizer • Face oil • Foundation in Alabaster and Ivory • Powder • Blush in Happy • Blush in Coral (Laughter) • Highlighter • Eyeshadow in Coriander (over lids) • Eyeshadow in Elephant (in creases) • Eyeshadow in Lion (at inner corners) • Mascara • False lashes • Brow pencil in Ash Blonde • Lip liner in Natural • Lipstick in Marisa • Lipstick in Suzy • Highlighter (on Cupid's bow)
What I like: Priyanka's deep berry lipstick—these rich tones are always amazing on her! I also like the gold shimmer dusted around her eyes (and not too perfectly), with long lashes. Her headpiece is so over-the-top, this was the right amount of makeup. What I'd change: Nothing, except she did her own eyebrows and I would've loved to see the makeup artist's touch. Who refuses Pati Dubroff?!
What I like: Zoë's nude, monochromatic makeup with the low bun and oversized bow. Absolute perfection! I love that she kept it fresh by skipping mascara and liner, and keeping her skin finish sheer to show her freckles. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Amanda's gorgeous, Rapunzel-like waves (and crown) with glowy pink blush and lipstick. The little bit of shine makes them more interesting, I think! I like the feathering of her brows, too. What I'd change: The false lashes could be better.
What I like: Olivia's chain-mail headpiece, long hair and red lips. Rather than heavy lashes and liner, she used reddish and golden tones to subtly shade her eyes, along with gold glitter at her inner corners. This reminds me of a warrior princess. What I'd change: Nothing. (We can see her brow pencil, but it doesn't really bother me.)
What I like: Rosie's halo headpiece, neat updo and fresh makeup. I especially like her berry-stained lips and straight, brushed-up brows. Her upper lash line is darkened, but her lower lashes are bare to keep it fresh. What I'd change: It's not bad, but shimmer on the cheeks tends to exaggerate pores.
Rosie is wearing: Eye cream • Moisturizer • Tightening gel • Anti-aging treatment • Primer • Foundation • Concealer • Powder • Contour and highlighter • Eyeshadow in TFX4 • Brow pencil in Blonde • Lipstick in Devore • Lip gloss in Cameo
What I like: Amber's gold crown, gold-painted hair and deep berry lipstick. Like so many others on this red carpet, she opted to emphasize her top lashes only, skipped the blush and wore a generous dusting of gold shimmer. What I'd change: Her contour doesn't seem well-blended from this angle. Also, I don't think I would've taken the dark copper shade quite so far down under her eyes.
What I like: Rihanna's glowing skin and smoky shadow. (Who else but Rihanna could make a Pope-inspired outfit look cool?) I'm mesmerized by her eyes, which are tightlined and shaded with taupe and plum shadow all the way up to her bleached brows. It also helps that the whites of her eyes are crazy white! The highlight on the lips is interesting. What I'd change: Her skin coverage is a little too light around her mid-face.
What I like: Hailey's messy pink lob, pink lipstick and flower crown. Every time I see this woman I am blown away by her skin! The contour is subtle, and I love the glossy finish to her brown eyeshadow. She has a light liner along her lower lash line, but it actually looks modern. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Solange's headscarf and crown combo, with flawless skin and fun makeup. Normally I'd say bottom false lashes are a "don't," but not this time! It's because they're deliberately chunky, with space in between, for a Twiggy-inspired vibe. Up top, she balanced them with matte black shadow and a set of gorgeous full brows. Love! What I'd change: Nothing.
Solange is wearing: Foundation in Pecan (centre of face) and Chestnut (outer face and cheekbones) • Powder in Almond • Eyeliner in Soft Black • Lip balm (mixed with eyeliner) • Mascara in Classic Black • Brow pencil in Brunette (on brows and as lip liner) • Lipstick in Niagara Nude and Sandy Seas (on lips and as highlighter)
What I like: Karlie's super-radiant skin, flushed pink cheeks and red lipstick. With natural brows and barely-there eye makeup, this is such a pretty, youthful look! I'm also really glad that she got rid of the platinum blonde. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Bella's gleaming skin... that shine off her forehead is everything! To show it off, she kept her makeup super-simple, with only a pop of metallic gold along her upper lash line and inner corners. Lashes and brows are soft and lips are glossy. What I'd change: Nothing.
Bella is wearing: Essence • Serum • Moisturizer • Foundation in Beige and Honey • Concealer in Medium • Powder in Medium • Bronzer in Amber • Blush in Mimi Bronze • Highlighter in Nude Glow • Eyeshadow palette in Heat Up (golden tones only) • Eyeliner in Matte White (with gold shimmer on top) • Mascara in Catwalk Black • Brow pencil in Universal Brown • Lipstick in Dio(r)eve
What I like: Gigi's pink eyeshadow tones, with vertical lines of gold glimmer through each pupil. With highlighter, black liner and lashes, there's a lot happening, but she has the lid space to pull it off. What I'd change: I'm just disappointed she went so glam, instead of trying something different to go with the theme! It just feels too modern, and a bit heavy, like something we've seen many times before.
Gigi is wearing: Primer • Foundation • Concealer in Light • Contour in Light • Contour powder • Blush in Nude • Highlighter in Molten Gold • Setting spray • Eyeliner in Stellar Sand • Eyeliner in Solar Gold • Eyeliner in White Luster (on waterlines) • Mascara (top lashes only) • Lip liner in Dusty Rose • Lipstick in Purely Nude
What I like: Kerry's voluminous afro and gold barrette. Her skin is flawless and dewy, and I appreciate the lighter touch on the brows this time. If you look closely, you'll see she's wearing metallic flakes over her eyelids. What I'd change: I really do not like the extra-long false lashes. They cheapen this—she doesn't need them!
Kerry is wearing: Moisturizer • Foundation in Cocoa • Concealer in Deep • Bronzer in Grateful • Highlighter in Elegant • Eyeshadow in Focused • Metallic flakes • Eyeliner in Cosmic Black • Mascara in Black • Lip gloss in Soft Mulberry
What I like: Emma's textured loose side ponytail—how amazing is her hair colour right now? I also love the creamy matte rose lipstick. What I'd change: I think it's too much eyeshadow, especially the gold shade taken out and all the way up to her brows. I mean... look at this. (Plus those appear to be false lashes!) Maybe if the application was more sheer, it would've worked better.
What I like: Zendaya's dark red wavy bob with short bangs. I love this hair on her so much—and it's actually her own, not a wig! The flushed cheeks, pink glossy lips and gold eyeshadow are stunning. What I'd change: She always does Instagram brows.
What I like: Kendall's sleek low ponytail, soft lashes and perfect straight brows. It looks like her skin has cleared up a bit since the Oscars, which I'm sure she is happy about. I'm inspired by the soft grey shadow and tightlining. What I'd change: Nothing, except it seems like what she always wears!
What I like: Kylie's skin looks really gorgeous, and I love the soft flushed cheeks, which are superbly blended. It looks like she's wearing lash extensions, which I always prefer to stiff falsies. What I'd change: Like Kendall's look, this is a bit generic. And I'm so not into the Instagram brows and obvious lip liner!
Kylie is wearing: Moisturizer • Moisturizer • Eye cream • Foundation in Golden Natural • Highlighter in Moon Glow • Bronzer in Golden Light • Blush in Pretty Coral • Eyeshadow in Bronze Extended • Mascara in Black • Lip liner in Dolce K
What I like: Jennifer's light pink eyeshadow, strong brows and fringe of thick lashes. Pinks are so great with her colouring! Her skin looks really natural, and I love that her hair is loose and shiny. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Selena's super-glittery gold eyeshadow and pale pink lipstick. We rarely see her in curly hair, so I'm liking the romantic updo as well. What I'd change: Well, it's way too much bronzer/fake tan. But I think what is happening here, as discussed in her Before & After, is that she's probably taking medication after her kidney transplant that has given her a fuller face. So she's trying to contour... I totally get it.
Selena is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Primer • Foundation in Y320 • Concealer in 2 Wake-Up Call • Concealer in Young 3 • Highlighter in 50 Dew You? (on face) • Highlighter in Fantasy (on body) • Powder • Setting spray • Bronzer in Tantric 102 • Blush in 506 Flesh & Fantasy • Eyeliner in Glitz Alright • Eyeshadow in Gleam Girl • Mascara in Noir • Mascara in Noir • Brow pencil in Medium Brown 6 • Brow gel in 30 Invisible • Lip balm • Lip liner in Cream & Sugar • Lipstick in Moody Margot 106
What I like: Scarlett's burgundy lip stain and matching eyeshadow. Her skin looks really natural, no blush, and I love her brows. The silver shimmer at her inner corners adds a bit of pop. What I'd change: Do we know if this hair is for a role? Because I never thought I'd see her in this "style." I'm fine with the brown, but all the layers and volume are not doing it for me! She's another one who played it too safe and didn't go with the theme.
What I like: Anne's rose lipstick, which has a wonderful patted-on texture. She's wearing a similar sheer shadow on her eyes, and I just love the dabs of shimmer underneath each pupil. What I'd change: It's a bit conservative, but I get why she did the updo with so much volume in her gown. I would've liked her hair down, with a different dress.
What I like: Emily's skin and brows are just amazing, and you know what? She wears fun colours like this shimmery orange eyeliner really well. I also appreciate that she rarely does false lashes. What I'd change: Aside from the fact that her lips look super-fake, I'm not keen on the heavy brown contour, shimmer and multi-tonal lipstick. Her hair also looks a bit stringy... but the braiding and headband could've really worked if her makeup had been more fresh!
Emily is wearing: Primer • Foundation in Y370 • Concealer in 3 Up All Night • Bronzer in Tan-Tastic • Highlighter in Fantasy (on face and body) • Setting spray • Eyeshadow palette in Fantascene • Eyeshadow palette in Glambition • Mascara in Noir • Lip liner in Nude(ist) 300 • Lipstick in Dreamgirl 154 • Lipstick in Sonic Truth 244 • Lip gloss in 342 Work It
What I like: Emilia's crown and earrings. With her equally elaborate dress, I actually kinda liked this from afar (i.e. this distance). It's very regal! Makeup-wise, the gold liner and ruby lipstick are fine. What I'd change: The bold blush just isn't working here! Unlike Kate Bosworth's, it's a heavier application and cooler in tone, so more extreme. Also, her skin looks quite dry. Unfortunately, it's a harder look to pull off when you don't have perfectly dewy, youthful skin.
Emilia is wearing: Face mist • Foundation in 2N2 Linen • Blush in Heather Pink • Blush in Barely Pink (as eyeshadow) • Eyeshadow in Gilded Gold • Eyeshadow in Glimmer • Mascara in Black • Lipstick in Fatale • Lipstick in Hot
What I like: Blake's crown, I suppose, and her raspberry lipstick. What I'd change: I feel like she's very off her red carpet game lately (compared to this event, for example!). The updo is a bit aging, her brows are too ashy, and the makeup could be more modern, I think. Even though the smoky eyes are in a cool colour, the application and the false lashes are a little dated.
What I like: I guess her hair is nice and shiny? What I'd change: Kim looks like she's about to dance in a '00s music video instead of attending a religious-themed fashion event! I know the lighting is harsh, but skin finish aside, the false lashes are insane, and the brows are too precise and exaggerated. Also, didn't she recently cut her hair into a lob? I can't keep track of how often this family gets extensions!
What I like: Jennifer's new straight lob! I have to say, it makes her look fresher and younger (this is what her hair looked like before). What I'd change: It's too bad she couldn't take the same approach to her face. This is one of the heaviest looks I've ever seen her wear—with ridiculously exaggerated lashes, two-toned skin and visible lip liner, to name a few things I don't like. There's a beautiful woman under there, but this is a crazy amount of makeup!
