Of all the red carpet events I report on each year, I think my favourite has to be the Cannes Film Festival.
Frankly, the beauty vibe is just BETTER. Fresher skin, more creative makeup, and, for the most part, an absence of my pet peeves like obvious contouring and false lashes.
Of course, it helps that at least 50 percent of the attendees are actually models! But you'll also see many of my actress beauty crushes, including Léa Seydoux, Emilia Clarke, Penélope Cruz and Marion Cotillard.
We have a lot to cover, so my commentary will be more succinct than usual!
What I like: Léa's soft strawberry lipstick, stick-straight lob and fresh skin. This is so effortlessly beautiful! What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Léa's rich burgundy-red lipstick, perfectly feathery brows and slicked-back updo. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Léa's brushed-out vintage waves. Obsessed! Also loving her smudgy, smoky liner and peachy-nude lipstick. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Léa's shorter bob (yes, she cut it midway through the festival!), luminous smoky eyes and coral lip gloss. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Léa's winged black liner, coral-red lip gloss and slicked-back wet hair. What I'd change: Nothing.
Léa is wearing: Liquid liner
What I like: Kristen's glossy burgundy eyeshadow (she always wears this colour so well!) with clear lip gloss and seamless blush. What I'd change: I'm not so into her curly blonde mullet.
What I like: Kristen's white eyeliner... if you look closely, you'll see an actual string of pearls along her lash lines! What I'd change: Her brow tails are too obviously drawn on.
What I like: Kristen's two-toned navy and light blue eyeshadow, paired with a neon pink lipstick. So fun! Also note the deliberate bobby pin placement. What I'd change: Nothing... except it may be bobby pin overkill at the back.
What I like: Kristen's heavy teal eyeshadow, all the way around her eyes. It works because her hair is off her face, and the rest of the makeup is low-key. What I'd change: Again, the brows are noticeably overdrawn.
What I like: Kristen's smoky, shimmery eyeshadow—it would be quite heavy on most people, but she can pull off a super-strong eye. The brows are better this time! What I'd change: I'd prefer a sleeker updo (less volume at the top).
What I like: Bella's soft waves (I can't recall seeing this style on her before!). The natural makeup, especially the gold liner underneath her eyes, is perfect. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Bella's ridiculously glowy, flawless skin! I think she wears a tight updo better than anyone else, and it's nice to see a colourful lipstick for a change. What I'd change: Her face is darker than her body.
What I like: Bella's glossy straight hair and warm neutral makeup. What I'd change: The contour's a bit intense.
What I like: Bella's bangs (which I'm assuming are clip-ins) with a messy top knot and red lip gloss. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Bella's tight updo with undone curls—with the oversized hoops, this feels very '90s! What I'd change: Nothing, although it looks so tight that her features are being pulled up, too. (Either that or Botox!)
What I like: Lupita's matchy-matchy berry-toned lipstick and eyeshadow. The sculptural updo is pretty cool, too. What I'd change: I wish the eyeshadow was more diffused toward the brows.
What I like: Emilia's bright pinky-red lipstick, bare eyes and strong brows. What I'd change: Nothing, except I miss her brunette!
What I like: Emilia's matte, pale skin (no discernible blush), subdued red lipstick and side-swept bangs. Classic and chic! What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Emilia's peach lipstick (I NEED this shade!) and matching blush. It looks like there's a hint of purple in her eyeshadow. What I'd change: I don't think the volume on top of her updo is really working.
What I like: Penélope's pretty hair and pink lipstick—I love the contrast of the baby pink with her warm colouring. What I'd change: The lip liner isn't blended.
What I like: Penélope's black liner, blended out from the waterlines, and rose lipstick. What I'd change: The contour is too dark and too orange.
What I like: Hailey's pastel pink top knot (which she has since dyed back to blonde, by the way) with gold eyeshadow and her always-flawless skin. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Salma's navy liner, copper eyeshadow and rosy pink lipstick. Such an unexpected combination—and it makes her girly styling way more interesting. What I'd change: Her lip liner isn't blended.
Salma is wearing: Concealer in 2 Fair • Powder in 2 Medium • Highlighter • Highlighter and contour • Eyeshadow in Star Gold • Eyeshadow in Dolce Vita • Eyeliner in Marlene Midnight • Mascara in Black Vinyl • Lip liner in Supersize Me • Lipstick in Too Bad I'm Bad
What I like: Salma's glossy red lipstick, long lashes and inner-corner highlighter. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Cate's pinned-to-one-side lob and shimmering pink shadow. What I'd change: Nothing.
Cate is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Primer • Foundation in 3 • Concealer in 1 • Concealer in 2 • Powder in 2 • Powder in 1 (as highlighter) • Powder in 8 (as contour) • Blush in 502 • Eyeshadow in 11 Rose Ashes (under brows) • Eyeshadow in 29 Armani Cruise (all over lids) • Eyeshadow in 1 (at roots of lashes) • Eyeshadow in 5 (under eyes) • Mascara in Black • Brow pencil in Sand Blond • Lipstick in 303 Dragee • Lip liner in 6
What I like: Cate's shimmery, smoky shadow, creamy pink lipstick and textured hair. What I'd change: The eyeshadow could be more blended, and I prefer the softer, ashier brows.
Cate is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Primer • Foundation in 3 • Concealer in 1 • Concealer in 2 • Blush in 306 • Highlighter in 10 Beige • Bronzer in 100 • Powder in 5.5 • Eyeshadow in 12 Gold Ashes (under brows) • Eyeshadow in 23 Camel Smoke (in socket) • Eyeshadow in 15 (over lids) • Eyeshadow in 6 (over lids) • Eyeshadow in 2 (at roots of lashes) • Mascara in Obsidian Black • Brow pencil in 1 • Lipstick in 508 Alexandrie • Lip liner in 4
What I like: Marion's purple cat eyes, peach lipstick and voluminous half-up hair. So fun with the leopard bodysuit! What I'd change: I'd just blend that lower lip liner.
What I like: Marion's creamy red lipstick and black cat eyes. What I'd change: I'm not crazy about the wet roots... and her brows are looking a bit sperm-like here!
What I like: Amber's healthy, dewy skin with classic winged liner and red lipstick. The messy top knot keeps this from looking too "done." What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Julianne's soft plum eyeshadow paired with pink blush and lip gloss. Her brows were handled very well—great texture! What I'd change: I think the blush placement is too low.
What I like: Kendall's straight brows and fluffy lashes (I'm sure they're extensions). Her skin is really nice here! What I'd change: Her lips look ridiculously fake, and the contour down her nose is too obvious.
What I like: Kendall's brows and long lashes (again). What I'd change: The contour is too dark/orange, and I'm not a fan of goopy lip gloss.
What I like: Lais' sleek ponytail, cat eyes and contoured lips. Normally, I would be against that unblended lower lip liner... but it looks good here! (Then again, what wouldn't look good on her?) What I'd change: Just some powder on her upper lip and around her nose.
What I like: Jennifer's mesmerizing shimmery eyeshadow, defined lashes and black liner hugging her waterlines. Set off, as usual, by strong brows, fresh skin and an ultra-tight updo. What I'd change: The dab of gloss on her lips seems out of place.
What I like: Sara's blackberry lipstick—I love this shade with her icy blue eyes! Notice how she skipped eyeliner and instead is wearing natural lashes and a dusting of silver shimmer. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Sara's smooth, retro waves with glossy red lips and what appears to be the same eye makeup as the previous look. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Diane's smooth, vintagey bob and subtle smoky eyes. I much prefer this to the edgy texture we've seen her with lately. What I'd change: A style with more volume, like Léa Seydoux's brushed out waves, would have been so pretty.
What I like: Liu's stained lips, dewy skin and perfect brows. What I'd change: It looks like there's too much product near her roots.
What I like: Doutzen's jet-black liner and defined lashes. The rest is just classic peachy tones with super-simple hair. What I'd change: Nothing, although it's a little boring.
What I like: Alessandra's creamy rose lipstick, dewy skin and natural brows. What I'd change: The overlining of her lips is very aggressive... do you think she got lip injections as well?
What I like: Jasmine's bright orange lipstick, undone top knot and natural lashes. Plus, her skin is so very glowy! What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Elsa's pink eyeshadow and red lipstick. The pink turns a classic winged liner and lipstick look into something far more exciting. What I'd change: I don't love the white in her lower waterlines.
Elsa is wearing: Moisturizer • Foundation • Complexion booster • Concealer • Highlighter and contour • Contour • Blush in Es Vedra • Blush and highlighter • Powder • Eyeshadow in Sophisticate • Eyeshadow in Exagger-Eyes • Eyeliner • Mascara in Black Vinyl • Lipstick in Red Carpet Red • Lip liner in Bad Romance • Body highlighter
What I like: Elsa's pink lipstick, soft lashes and old Hollywood waves. She looks like a Barbie doll come to life (in a good way)! What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Shanina's pink eyeshadow, all the way up to her brows, with matching blush and lipstick. I love that she paired this with a chartreuse dress! What I'd change: Nothing.
Shanina is wearing: Foundation • Complexion booster in 6 Tan/Dark • Blush and highlighter • Eyeshadow in Exagger-Eyes • Mascara in Black Vinyl • Lip liner in Supersize Me • Lipstick in Charlotte Darling
What I like: Thandie's half-back curls—this has always been one of my favourite styles for curly hair! I also love the hot pink lips; it's nice to see her doing colour there for a change. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Georgia's gorgeous smoky eyes... I could stare at them all day! I'm also obsessed with her brows, semi-glossy pink lips and slicked hair. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Adriana's glossy peach lipstick, dewy skin and wet hair. What I'd change: The blush isn't quite blended, and I'm not sure how I feel about the super-straight brows.
Adriana is wearing: Primer • Foundation • Concealer in Light • Contour in Light • Contour in Light to Medium • Blush in Rose • Highlighter in Molten Gold • Setting spray • Eyeshadow palette in Soda Pop (available September 2018) • Eyeliner in White Luster • Mascara in Very Black • Lipstick in Purely Nude
What I like: Adriana's super-precise red lipstick and soft lashes. What I'd change: I'm not crazy about the stiff retro hair.
What I like: Helen's tousled short cut with shimmering eyeliner and a hot pink lip stain. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Ming's soft, side-parted hair with the ends curled under. I also like her brows, lashes and coral lip gloss. What I'd change: I'd add a bit more blush and coverage around the nose.
What I like: Izabel's shimmery plum eyeshadow with matte pink lipstick and long waves. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Carey's bold red lip stain and natural lashes. What I'd change: Something about this feels a little dated... I think it may be the hairstyle (I'm not a fan) and the pink blush (I would've skipped it).
What I like: Carey's straight lob (this hairstyle is more like it!) and a pop of sheer, hot pink lip gloss. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Irina's glowing skin, perfect brows and golden eyeliner. I think she tightlined with a darker shade, too, but kept her lashes super-soft. What I'd change: Her upper lip can't naturally be this way... can it?
What I like: Josephine's baby pink lip gloss, defined upper lashes and undone updo. What I'd change: I'm not sure about the cut-crease eyeshadow technique; that always strikes me as dated.
What I like: Daphne's long curls, super-natural brows and rosy lip colour. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Romee's flippy waves, shimmery eyeshadow and flawless skin. There's nothing groundbreaking here; this is all about showing off her natural beauty. What I'd change: Nothing.
What I like: Joan's chic ponytail, full brows and super-glossy red lips. What I'd change: So, her upper lip never used to be so distractingly huge (I just looked up her old pictures). Joan, you're better than this!
What I like: Barbara's rose lipstick, subtly shaded eyes and natural brows. What I'd change: The false lashes cheapen this.
What I like: Chloë's glossy red lipstick with just mascara. You know what? We're so used to hiding every perceived imperfection, but I find it refreshing to see real, foundation-free skin! What I'd change: The only thing I might cover is some of the redness around the nose; I find that instantly makes you look more polished.
