American Music Awards 2018 beauty looks

At this year's American Music Awards, musicians may have received all the accolades—but it was the actresses who ruled the red carpet.

Namely, Amber Heard and Leighton Meester, who had my favourite glam of the night. But I was also excited about Tracee Ellis Ross, with her fearless approach to makeup, and Cobie Smulders, who schooled us in the art of colour-blocking.

These were the most inspiring celeb looks:

Amber Heard

What I like: Amber's peachy makeup, glowing skin and slicked-back wet hair (it's in a braid at the back). The lip colour is especially lovely, and if you look closely, you can see she's wearing blue mascara on her lower lashes. What I'd change: The bronzer could be softer and more blended, especially around her forehead.

Amber is wearing: Foundation in Nude Beige • Blush in Barely Blushing • Eyeshadow in Impressive BrownEyeshadow in Because I'm Worth It • Eyeliner in Black • Mascara in Cobalt Blue • Mascara in Black • Lipstick in Matte-cadamia

Leighton Meester

What I like: Leighton's rich red lipstick with gold eyeshadow and defined lashes. I love the texture of her brows, and how we can still see the freckles across her nose. What I'd change: Nothing.

Vanessa Hudgens

What I like: Vanessa's shimmery pink shadow (which matches her dress perfectly) and shiny lob, tucked behind one ear. The glow down her nose and in the centre of her lips really brings this to life. What I'd change: I'd do clear lip gloss (not so goopy), more feathery brows, and no lip liner.

Vanessa is wearing: Foundation in Buff • Highlighter in Solar • Eyeshadow in Friendcation

Tracee Ellis Ross

What I like: Tracee's makeup-free skin, graphic black liner and mod pink lipstick. I know this won't be everyone's taste, but I SO appreciate her willingness to experiment—she's never boring! What I'd change: This would be better with her hair up and less overdrawn lips. Usually, I dig chunky lashes but these are really stubby.

Tracee is wearing: Highlighter • Eyeshadow in VR Nectar • Eyeliner in Xtreme Black • Lip liner in Buff • Lipstick in Christy

Taylor Swift

What I like: Taylor has returned to her Life Cut! This is my all-time favourite hair for her—long and dark blonde with bangs, which we haven't seen since 2013. What an improvement compared to the shag she used to have, and that time she bleached it platinum. The makeup's still on the heavy side, but I do like the grey shadow and baby pink lips. What I'd change: She probably had to do industrial-strength foundation since she was performing, but I'd prefer a lighter touch... same with the lip liner!

Ciara

What I like: Ciara's big, textured curls with bright gold highlighter at the inner corners of her eyes and down the bridge of her nose. Her skin is looking flawless and naturally sculpted. What I'd change: I think the brows could be better, with fine strokes through the tails.

Cobie Smulders

What I like: Cobie's fun colour-blocked makeup—a pop of blue liner with an orangey-red lip stain, against fresh skin. The shades match her floral dress, but look more edgy than sweet thanks to the textured lob, bare lashes and natural brows. What I'd change: Nothing.

Amandla Stenberg

What I like: Amandla's beautiful skin and smoky reverse cat eyes. The liner is focused below her lower lash lines, with bare lids and natural lashes above. I also love the colourful pieces woven into her braids—the ends are like tassels! What I'd change: Nothing.

Amandla is wearing: MoisturizerEye creamFoundation in 7.75 and 8.5Concealer in CaramelContour (deepest shade) • Eyeshadow in Black Metal • Eyeliner in Xtreme BlackLiquid liner in Xtreme BlackMascara in Black • Lip balm • Lip liner in Ground Control (all over lips) • Tinted lip balm in Blow Up

Dua Lipa

What I like: Dua's brown lipstick, matching shadow and lush lashes. She has a new, shorter bob (this is what her hair looked like before) and I always love her brows. What I'd change: Her lip liner is just a slightly different colour.

Camila Cabello

What I like: Camila's clear lip gloss, flushed pink cheeks and flawless skin. We can't really see her eye makeup, but it's nice to see less blush compared to her VMAs look. What I'd change: Her hair. It's a bit piecey, and feel like there's too much volume at the top, or something?

Camila is wearing: Eye creamMoisturizer • Foundation • Concealer • Contour in Chestnut • Blush in Sexy Flush • Highlighter in Slay in Rose • Eyeshadow in In Love • Eyeshadow in Noir C'est Noir • Eyeliner in Black • Lash primer • Mascara in Mystic Black • Lip liner in Matte's It • Lip gloss in Desnudo

Rita Ora

What I like: Rita's high, sculptural ponytail (here it is from more angles). It really works with the dress, which I love; the same goes for the cat eyes and glossy pale lips. What I'd change: I'd love to see her eyebrows straighter, not so arched and pointy. It would really soften her look.

Rita is wearing: False lashes

Busy Philipps

What I like: Busy's metallic silver eyeshadow at the inner corners of her eyes. Her pink lip gloss is the perfect shade and texture. What I'd change: The centre parted waves are not doing it for me... but I think the main issue is actually her hair colour, which is too close to her skin tone. It should be either darker, like this, or lighter and icier, like this.

Constance Wu

What I like: Constance's half-up wavy hair (the wrapped ponytail is a nice touch) and semi-iridescent red lip. What I'd change: There's too much going on. I'd tone down the eyeshadow and blush and ditch the harsh waterline liner. Also, I think her brows could be brushed across (if not up) with a strong-hold tinted brow gel.

Jennifer Lopez

What I like: Jennifer's messy updo with a side-swept bang. And her bronde hair colour is perfection. What I'd change: As usual, she'd look great with half as much makeup. The base is too light and the contouring is too dark... and I'd rather see normal lips than this dark ring all the time. It's not fooling anyone!

Who had your favourite (and least favourite) look on this red carpet?
