This year's Academy Awards may not have had a host, but that didn't stop the celebrity attendees from bringing their beauty A-game as usual.

Traditionally, Oscars glam is always a little "safer" than what we've been seeing all awards season long at the GlobesCritics' Choice, the SAGs and the BAFTAs.

Last night, that was certainly the case for makeup, but hair was a different story. The ubiquitous old Hollywood waves of seasons past were for the most part replaced by bobs, braids and interesting hair accessories.

I could stare at Laura's makeup all day. The aqua shadow melting into a soft purple, with creamy coral lips... have you ever seen anything so exquisite?! It's also nice to see her hair up for a change!

Aren't you so happy to see Emilia has returned to brunette? Here's her hair the last time we saw her—it has grown a lot as well! With her bob all slicked down, the focus is on sheer hot pink lips, matching cheeks and shimmering pink shadow. As always, I love her strong brows and natural skin texture (no Botox here). But I'm wondering if she's had her upper lip done!

Constance Wu

Constance has been very hit and miss, but finally, she delivered! In this simple, bouncy ponytail and soft red lip, she looks more comfortable and confident than she has all awards season. It's the bright yellow dress that really makes it feel young and fresh. I just wish her foundation shade was a fraction lighter to better match her skin tone.

Lady Gaga

On TV, I was distracted by Gaga's deep spray tan, but I'm not seeing evidence of it here (well, except for her arms). This is the most natural-looking makeup she's worn so far this year. I'm not a fan of the white hair, but the sculptural updo is kind of cool. And her skin is truly beautiful.

Lady Gaga is wearing: PrimerFoundationConcealer in Medium 33 and Medium 36 • Powder in Muse • Blush in Lush & Libido • Eyeshadow in Steel(etto) • Eyeliner in Steel(etto) • Lash primer • Mascara in Noir • Lipstick in Slow Burn

Amy Adams

Amy was the one star on this red carpet who didn't veer from traditional Hollywood glam. With the light colour of her dress, I like that she amped up her eye makeup with a strong copper all the way up to her brows. I just wish she wore her hair up and sleek instead of these tired waves.

Amy is wearing: MoisturizerPrimer • Highlighter • Eyeshadow in The Dolce Vita and The Golden Goddess • Lipstick in Pillow Talk • Lip gloss in High Society

Charlize Theron

Charlize went darker specifically for the Oscars, on the advice of her hairstylist. I do like the brunette with the pale blue dress... just not on her! Along with the high neck and puffed sleeves, it's too mature and aging. Blonde is what gives her that star quality! Makeup-wise, her skin looks gorgeous and the lipstick is pretty, but I'd prefer more feathery brows.

Lucy Boynton

Lucy has been bringing us such experimental looks (like her eyeliner at the SAGs and her eyeshadow at the Globes), I can't help but feel let down here. I think part of it is that the dress is so dark and jarring against her super light skin and hair. It just doesn't seem cohesive. The wavy bob, pink eyeshadow and matching lip gloss are all fine, but I find the lashes too long and clumpy.

Lucy is wearing: MoisturizerFace mist • Eye mask • Foundation in Porcelain • Concealer in 1 • Powder in Candlelight • Blush in Butterfly (as blush and eyeshadow) • Eyeshadow in Sylvie • Eyeshadow in Polar Ice • Eyeshadow in Sole • Mascara • Lipstick in Wisteria

Gemma Chan

Gemma's mega-voluminous pink dress was very divisive, and perhaps the same goes for her beauty look. While I think the low bun was the right fit, I would have preferred it to be smooth. I'm not sure the matte pink eyeshadow really works, but the cat eyes are great—and there's a touch of emerald green to match her earrings!

Brie Larson

What I like about this is that Brie doesn't look "done." The casual lob hairstyle makes the sequinned gown more relaxed. The problem is, rooty blonde is not her friend. I'm also not a fan of the rusty brown-toned makeup. Peaches and corals are her colours.

Brie is wearing: TonerSerum • Moisturizer • Foundation in Beige 30Concealer in 20 Beige and 30 Beige • Bronzer • Powder in 30 Naturel • Blush in 22Blush in In LoveBlush in Tweed BeigeHighlighter in White OpalHighlighter in Sculpting • Powder in 20 (as eyeshadow) • Eyeshadow in Lueurs Ambrees • Eyeliner in Espresso • Mascara in Noir • Brow pencil in Blond Cendré • Brow mascara in Transparent • Lip liner in Mordoré • Lipstick in Bois Rose • Lipstick in Chicness

Jennifer Lopez

This is more of an after-party look on Jennifer. The best part is her hair—the smooth, controlled waves and the gorgeous face-framing golden highlights. But I'm never into her makeup, and this is no exception. There's way too much contour, the eyeshadow is dated and she's got an obvious ring around her lips. Less is more, J.Lo!

Rachel Weisz

I firmly believe that Rachel is working with the wrong styling team right now. I mean, what is this dress and this headband?! It's like they're deliberately trying to make her look bad. At least the makeup is understated (if she'd gone matchy-matchy with a red lip, I would have lost it).
