Ask a Hairstylist: The Best Shades of Golden Blonde Hair to Make Your Skin Glow

Honey tones are your friend.
Golden blonde hair

Q: Hi! I want to go blonde and am wondering what shade would look good on my hair.

I have green eyes, super pale skin, and naturally brown hair. I've dyed it a handful of times, and currently it is close to my natural colour, but with tints of red.

Rebecca wants to go from brunette hair to blonde.

My hair is thin but has a naturally wavy, awkward texture. I rarely wear it natural because it tends to fall flat no matter what I do to it. Thank you for your help! — Rebecca

A: Rebecca, I agree with you. You should definitely go blonder.

The red needs to go. It's too punky, too harsh—and it's not doing anything for your skin. Your hair and skin are fighting, and the hair is winning. In other words, I'm staring at your hair, when I should be noticing your skin.

A golden blonde would look beautiful on you. That will suit your light skin and will really make it glow.

Be careful that it is gold, though, and not a yellow blonde. Yellow is the wrong shade for your skin tone and will make you look sick.

The gold should have a little bit of amber or honey in there. It will be more of an L.A., Hollywood look.

To achieve this, you need to go to a professional. The red hair has to be properly removed. Do not try to do it at home because your hair will be on the floor.

Instead of bleaching your whole head, I would do quite a bit of highlights. They have to be built up, so it will take maybe two visits. Probably within three or four months, you will have what you want.

Get your stylist to tone your hair with double gold and a little bit of honey. There's a toner from Schwarzkopf. If they could use maybe three quarters 8-55 and one quarter 7-57, that would be the honey gold colour that I'm talking about.

This will create a lot of glow to your skin and your eyes will pop. There will be no fight between your skin and hair.

Throughout this process, you should also use quite a lot of protein treatments and masks, and take some biotin.

Using a hairdryer is okay, but if you could cut down to using your flat iron only once a week, when you have to go out, that would be great. Always apply a heat protectant whenever you have to use your flat iron.

Multiply by three months, and your hair will rejuvenate.
