In case you hadn't noticed—there's been lots of exciting skincare launches hitting the stores lately!
And they're not just pretty to look at. As you know, I'm always analyzing ingredients lists, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover so many "clean" formulations this season. More and more brands seem to be eschewing silicones, sulfates and heavy fragrance in favour of more skin-friendly ingredients. FINALLY!
New Skincare Products for Spring 2019
Glow Recipe Pineapple-C Bright Serum
Glow Recipe Pineapple-C Bright Serum is a brightening serum with vitamin C and alpha-hydroxy acid. I really like the lightweight but hydrating texture! The key ingredients are ascorbic acid (active vitamin C), ethyl ascorbic acid (a vitamin C derivative) and lactic acid, along with hyaluronic acid, aloe and squalane. It's also low in silicone and has less than one percent synthetic fragrance. Because of the instability of ascorbic acid, I would use this up within three months.
Lano Face Base Gelcream Cleanser
Lano Face Base Gelcream Cleanser is a sulfate-free cleanser for normal, dry and sensitive skin (although I think even oily skin could use it). The texture is a creamy gel—it reminds me of hand soap, actually—and it produces a mild lather that rinses away clean. This is made with 98.5 percent natural ingredients.
REN Clean Screen Mineral SPF 30 Mattifying Face Sunscreen
REN Clean Screen Mineral SPF 30 Mattifying Face Sunscreen is a mineral sunscreen with 22 percent zinc oxide for complete UVA and UVB protection. It's free of silicones, drying alcohols and synthetic fragrances, and the addition of rice starch gives a mattifying effect. There are essential oils in here, but they're in a very low concentration (less than one percent). This one has not launched in Canada yet, but I'm trying to get my hands on a sample to test!
Volition Strawberry-C Serum
Volition Strawberry-C Serum is another brightening serum. Although it contains strawberry extract, which has some smoothing benefits, the main active ingredient is ethyl ascorbic acid (vitamin C). So it's more stable than L-ascorbic acid formulas, although not as powerful. The texture is a gel that sinks in fast without any stickiness.
Tata Harper Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer
Tata Harper Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer is a lightweight moisturizer designed for oily and combination skin. Its main ingredients include barley water, glycerin, propanediol, coconut oil and shea butter esters, and like all products from this brand, it's free of silicones and artificial fragrances. This would be ideal for the summertime and layering under sunscreen, when you don't want anything too heavy!
Tatcha The Satin Skin Mist
Tatcha The Satin Skin Mist is a liquid powder face mist that absorbs oil and mattifies the skin without disturbing your makeup. The star ingredient is a clay from Okinawa, Japan; it also contains a green tea, rice and algae complex for hydration. I would say this one is best suited to oily skin; other skin types may find it too drying.
Naturally Serious Mineral Sun Defense Moisturizer Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30
Naturally Serious Mineral Sun Defense Moisturizer Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30 is another mineral sunscreen, and it offers a very high level of protection. It has 25 percent zinc oxide and four percent titanium dioxide, but is less likely to cause a white cast due to its slight tint. No silicones in here, and there is less than one percent synthetic fragrance.
Omorovicza Daily Vitamin C
Omorovicza Daily Vitamin C is a vitamin C serum with a milky texture—almost like an emulsion or lotion. This one has sodium ascorbyl phosphate, a vitamin C derivative that not only brightens but also has been shown to treat acne. It's free of silicone and has less than one percent synthetic fragrance. The alcohol content shouldn't be an issue if you are layering this under a good hydrator.
Glossier Super Pure Niacinamide + Zinc Serum
Glossier Super Pure Niacinamide + Zinc Serum was just reformulated and now, it contains five percent niacinamide—a good dose for getting its many benefits such as brightening, fading pigmentation, and clearing acne. It has a short, simple ingredients list, and is silicone-free and fragrance-free.
This Works Morning Expert Multi-Acid Pads
This Works Morning Expert Multi-Acid Pads are exfoliating pads that are gentle enough to use daily. They're infused with alpha-hydroxy acids from natural sources like sugar cane, along with niacinamide for extra brightening and azelaic acid to target acne.
Youth to the People Adaptogen Soothe + Hydrate Activated Mist
Youth to the People Adaptogen Soothe + Hydrate Activated Mist is a calming and hydrating mist that can be used underneath and on top of makeup. It moisturizes with propanediol, aloe and shea butter, and combats sensitivity with a peptide and reishi mushroom extract. This sounds very promising for redness!
Cellu-Cup Glow Cup
Cellu-Cup Glow Cup is a cupping device for facial massage. (The brand also sells cups for treating body cellulite, and they honestly do work!) The suction creates negative pressure that increases blood flow, reduces muscle tension, and plumps the skin. It's even said to treat wrinkles, acne and pigmentation. I would just be careful not to overdo it, as there could be a risk of broken capillaries.
ILIA True Skin Radiant Priming Serum
ILIA True Skin Radiant Priming Serum is a lightweight hydrating serum that doubles as a silicone-free primer under makeup. It's a thin, clear gel that creates a silky-soft base for foundation (you just need to give it one minute to dry down first). Its moisturizing ingredients include aloe, gluconolactone, glycerin and propanediol. Worn alone, it gives skin a matte but glowy finish.
Kosas Kosasport LipFuel Hyaluronic Lip Balm
Kosas Kosasport LipFuel Hyaluronic Lip Balm is a natural lip balm that comes in clear (Baseline) and two tints. Rush is a cool pink, while Pulse is a warm tan (almost like a brick colour). All are super moisturizing thanks to castor seed oil, lanolin and beeswax.
Indie Lee Daily Skin Nutrition
Indie Lee Daily Skin Nutrition is a light natural moisturizing cream. Unlike the brand's oil-free moisturizer, this one contains squalane, avocado, olive and rosehip seed oils. (For that reason, I'd use this up within six months, before they oxidize.) There's no silicone or fragrance, and it's not at all greasy!
Lanolips Rose Gold 101 Ointment
Lanolips Rose Gold 101 Ointment is a tinted version of the brand's cult classic pure lanolin balm, and it can be used on both lips and cheeks. The colour is super pretty, a sheer coral-red with a subtle hint of gold. I've been wearing this non-stop and plan to buy more!
Skinfix Barrier+ Foaming Oil Cleanser
Skinfix Barrier+ Foaming Oil Cleanser is a gentle foaming cleanser for normal, dry and combination skin. It's sulfate-free, and cleans with non-stripping, coconut-based surfactants. Jojoba and macadamia oil esters give it a creamy, hydrating texture.
Lano Face Base The Aussie Flyer Leave-On Recovery Mask
Lano Face Base The Aussie Flyer Leave-On Recovery Mask is an oil-rich moisturizing mask made with lanolin, shea butter and cocoa butter. Apparently it can be used on all skin types (as long as you tolerate those heavier oils), and it's said to be especially effective for airplane travel. You don't even need to rinse it off.
This Works Morning Expert Hyaluronic Serum
This Works Morning Expert Hyaluronic Serum is a hydrating and plumping serum. It has two percent hyaluronic acid, plus 10 percent vitamin C (in the form of ascorbyl glucoside, a mild vitamin C derivative that also has brightening benefits). It's silicone-free, with less than one percent synthetic fragrance.
Glossier Super Bounce Hyaluronic Acid + Vitamin B5 Serum
Glossier Super Bounce Hyaluronic Acid + Vitamin B5 Serum was recently reformulated to include a two percent hyaluronic acid complex (with high, medium and low molecular weights). It also has glycerin, propanediol and panthenol (B5) for added hydration. I believe this one used to have silicone, but now it doesn't!
Indie Lee I-Recover Mind & Body Gel
Indie Lee I-Recover Mind & Body Gel is a gel body moisturizer that soothes achy muscles. The arnica and eucalyptus are anti-inflammatory; the menthol is cooling; and the lavender, patchouli and sage have aromatherapeutic properties. This would be nice to apply post-workout or after a long day on your feet.
Beautycounter Countercontrol All Over Acne Treatment
Beautycounter Countercontrol All Over Acne Treatment is a two percent salicylic acid treatment that can be used all over the face to treat and prevent breakouts. (This ingredient is the best thing for acne!) It has a gel texture, is silicone-free, and feels very light on the skin. There is alcohol in here, but it's acting as a penetration enhancer (so just follow up with moisturizer). My only complaint is that I wish it came in a bigger bottle!
Odacité Blue Aura Cleansing Water
Odacité Blue Aura Cleansing Water is an all-natural, no-rinse micellar water. It uses a mild surfactant, paired with hydrating aloe, MCT oil and glycerin. Weirdly, the instructions say to avoid the eye area, perhaps because of the small amount of salicylic acid, so this would be for cleansing the skin only. If you are sensitive to witch hazel, avoid this one.
Lano Face Base Vitamin E Day Cream
Lano Face Base Vitamin E Day Cream is a nourishing natural moisturizing cream that is high in lanolin, shea butter and glycerin. Despite the name, you could use this day or night; the brand suggests mixing it with or layering it under other active products, but I wouldn't do that (they won't penetrate well). Because of the small amounts of almond and grape seed oils, I would use this up within six months, before they oxidize. This is, of course, silicone-free.
