"I never really had great skin," says Phoebe Tonkin.
Although you can't tell now, the 29-year-old Vampire Diaries star has dealt with breakouts since she was a teenager. "I was always very self-conscious about not wearing concealer or anything," she revealed to Byrdie.
It wasn't until she moved to Los Angeles from her native Australia, and began seeing a certain celebrity facialist, that her skin transformed.
"I was very lucky to meet an amazing lady called Shani Darden who really changed my skin. She put me onto this regimen, which I'm so diligent about—I'm more diligent about that than anything else. My skin is just night and day."
Now, Phoebe has a second facialist, Melanie Grant, and both experts' product suggestions have become part of her routine. She also uses plenty of Chanel, after recently becoming a brand ambassador, and has a thing for high-tech gadgets. ("I'm just obsessed with anything skincare, so if someone has something that I don't have I'm like, 'Ooh, what's that?'")

Phoebe‘s Morning Skincare Routine
iS Clinical Cleansing Complex: "In the morning I wash my face with an iS Clinical cleanser."
Biologique Recherche Lotion P50: "[My facialist, Melanie Grant] put me onto the P50."
Biologique Recherche Placenta Sérum Authentique: "Then I use the Biologique serum."
SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum: "[In the morning] I apply SkinMedica's TNS Essential Serum."
Chanel La Solution 10 de Chanel Sensitive Skin Cream: "The moisturizer I use is Solution 10, which is the Chanel one, and it's amazing."
5. Face Oil:
Chanel Huile de Jasmin Revitalizing Facial Oil: "I like to mix Solution 10 with some oil, especially when I'm travelling or dehydrated or haven't slept very well. I mix them together and basically massage my face, which is really good to do in the morning."
Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35: "And then, very important—whether it's raining, snowing, hailing, or if it's sunny—sunscreen. You can always tell in Australia if someone isn't Australian because they're very sunburnt. Australians are very diligent with their SPF."
Control Corrective Oil Free Sunscreen SPF 30: "I add an oil-free sunscreen."
Chanel Vitalumière Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Sunscreen Makeup: "I always mix a bit of the Chanel foundation with my moisturizer. I really like to use the tiniest amount of foundation. I use Chanel Vitalumière Aqua foundation."
Chanel Palette Essentielle Conceal & Highlight Palette: "Basically, I mix the concealer from the Essentielle Palette and a foundation. I don't really like to cover my skin too much. I like to see freckles, I like to see blemishes, I even kind of like to see dark circles. I think it looks a little sexy to look like you're not entirely well-rested... or maybe I'm just justifying, because I naturally have dark circles."
RMS Beauty Living Luminizer: "I use RMS Living Luminizer on my eyelids and my cheekbones."
10. Lip Balms:
Lucas' Papaw Ointment: "I like the Lucas' Papaw Ointment, which is really boring because everyone says that."
Glossier Balm Dotcom: "I also use Glossier Balm Dotcom."
Phoebe’s Nighttime Skincare Routine
1. Makeup Removers:
Chanel Démaquillant Yeux Intense: "I wash my make up off with Chanel makeup remover."
Coconut oil: "It makes a great makeup remover... which is especially great when you are on location and you can just order it from room service!"
Tracie Martyn Amla Purifying Cleanser: "I love this natural cleanser. I use it every night so it's good to know that I'm not putting unnecessary chemicals on my skin."
Biologique Recherche Lait U: "I use the Biologique cleanser."
iS Clinical Cleansing Complex: "At night I wash with the same iS Clinical cleanser."
CosMedix Purity Detox Scrub: "In the evening, a few times a week, I use CosMedix Purity Detox Scrub."
iS Clinical Active Serum: "Then I use either Shani Darden's Retinol Reform or iS Clinical Active Serum. I alternate between the two each night."
Resurface by Shani Darden Retinol Reform: "[Shani Darden] has a great retinol that I use... I try to see her if I can when I'm in L.A., but it's more just about the retinol that I use of hers."
CosMedix Serum 16: "After cleansing I apply CosMedix Serum 16 alternating with Shani Darden Retinol every second night."
5. Eye Cream:
La Mer The Eye Concentrate: "This is my biggest beauty investment. I don't get as much sleep as I'd like and this feels luxurious and moisturizing on my skin."
Phoebe‘s Skincare Treatments
Melanie Grant: "I love facials. I would go once a week if I could. I have this amazing facialist in Australia called Melanie Grant."
Shani Darden: "In Sydney, I see Melanie Grant, and in L.A., I go to Shani Darden. They are my two magical skin fairies."
Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask: "I love masks. If I'm going out somewhere, I love the Sisley Black Rose Mask—it's so pretty and luxurious. Sometimes I sleep in it and your skin is glowing the next day."
Biologique Recherche Masque Vivant and Masque VIP O2: "My favourite trick is to use the Masque Vivant combined with the Masque VIP O2. I mix it in my hand with baking soda. A facialist told me about that, and it works."
SK-II Facial Treatment Mask: "I'm obsessed with these for long flights and I leave them on for as long as I can. I also like to use them before big events or on a Sunday morning for a pick-me-up."
Chanel Le Lift Flash Eye Revitalizer: "A few times a week... I use Chanel Le Lift Flash Eye Revitalizer."
Manuka honey: "I just put it straight on my face. When you wash your face, it just feels really clean and a little tighter. In a good way, not in a dry way."
ZIIP Beauty Nano Current Device: "I started using it, and it's amazing. Like, it actually is amazing. It does work."
Red Light Therapy:
"I have all the gadgets—I have the LED mask, I have it all. I use them when I'm watching TV. I am obsessed with red light therapy."
Phoebe’s Diet, Exercise and Lifestyle
"I really believe beauty starts from within. Eating nutritious fruits and vegetables and getting enough water... is a big priority for me, and then using good products and keeping consistent with my skincare regimen comes second."
"When I feel like having cheese and wine for dinner, I take chlorophyll and spirulina tablets so at least I'm incorporating some greens! They're great for an extra boost. I also take a daily probiotic and vitamin D because I'm inside a studio all day and sometimes won't see any daylight."
"It's legal here now, so I get the legit CBD. I just take it before bed and it's life changing. I really believe in it. It really is just chilling you out and I don't think that's a bad thing."
Ballet Beautiful and Ballet Bodies: "I like being trained by ballerinas, so I go to someone called Mary Helen Bowers in New York. In L.A. I train with Andie [Hecker] who uses a reformer machine and I can barely walk afterwards. [If I'm travelling] I do the Ballet Beautiful videos and just walk."
