Blonde to platinum

Q: My hair is long and fine (but there is a ton of it), and it's in need of a lot of help.

I started highlighting my hair in high school and have always stuck with golden blonde hues. But I recently decided I want to dye it platinum blonde and cut it to about three inches below my shoulders.

After sharing this decision with my family and friends, a lot of them were shocked and told me it was a really bad decision. Honestly, I just want to look like a cross between Marilyn Monroe and Barbie.

What shade of blonde would you recommend? — Alexandra

Alexandra has had golden blonde highlights since high school.

A: Alexandra, looking at your first picture, you are already close to a platinum blonde.

If you go more platinum than this, you're going to look like Gwen Stefani.

Your skin will be able to take it, because you are pale. However, it will wash you out.

So, expect to have to wear more makeup. Think of how Gwen usually wears red lipstick.

Also, going this light—like Gwen or Marilyn Monroe—is very avant-garde. You can carry it, but if you're going to have hair like a star, you'd better act the part.

You will have to dress it up, style your hair, wear the right outfit, the right accessories, and like I said, the right makeup. Otherwise, it's not going to work. With shorts and a T-shirt, it will clash.

This hair colour is like a full-time job.

As for the colour you have now, it's okay, but there's a lack of warmth to it.

I think a gold blonde mixed with a lot of baby blonde highlights would be a beautiful colour for you.

If you do decide to go platinum blonde, you should only plan to maintain it for maybe two to six months, max. Then your hair should be brought back down to a normal level.

Platinum is too hard to keep up long-term. It's very damaging and your hair will eventually break.
