Now that you're up to speed on the best mineral sunscreens for your face and body, you might be wondering how to protect one more area...

Your lips!

According to Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi, they're the number one place that people forget to apply sunscreen—and also one of the most vulnerable to skin cancer.

The problem is, it's not easy to find a lip balm that contains mineral sunscreen, let alone one with a tint.

That's why I'm so happy I discovered COOLA's Tinted Mineral Liplux SPF 30.

In this review, I'll be sharing:

  • What you need to know about COOLA
  • My thoughts on the Liplux formula, performance and texture
  • Swatches of six gorgeous shades!

About COOLA

First, some quick background on COOLA, in case you're new to the brand.

COOLA was founded in 2004 by Chris Birchby, a California-based grad student whose parents were both diagnosed with melanoma around the same time. Disappointed with the sunscreens on the market, especially the lack of organic options, Chris decided to create his own.

Fun fact: While in school, he also became a professional poker player, and used his earnings to help fund the start-up.

Today, COOLA is one of the fastest-growing suncare companies in the world, offering not just conventional sunscreens but also sunscreen makeup... like the Liplux lip balms!

COOLA Tinted Mineral Liplux SPF 30 is a mineral sunscreen lip balm that comes in an array of sheer tints.

In terms of active ingredients, you're being protected with both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The exact amounts vary depending on the shade, but they use between 1.4 and 3.0 percent zinc, and between 2.8 and 3.6 percent titanium.

Yes, these are lower amounts than my recommended sunscreen lotions for your skin, simply due to the challenges of formulating for a lip balm, but I would still consider this good protection.

If you wanted even more, you could easily use a face sunscreen on your lips as your base layer, let it dry, and then layer Liplux on top!

This lip balm is also water-resistant for up to 40 minutes, so it will stay on even when you're swimming.

And yet, it's still a natural formula. Liplux is made from more than 70 percent organic ingredients, including naturally-derived colours and flavours.

Like the active ingredients, the inactives are different for each shade, but here's the list for Tan Line (my favourite, which I'm wearing above!):

Beeswax (ORGANIC), Butyrospermum Parkii (ORGANIC Shea Butter), Carmine, Cocos Nucifera (ORGANIC Coconut) Oil, Copernicia Cerifera (ORGANIC Carnauba) Wax, Flavor, Iron Oxides, Jojoba Esters, Mica, Octyldodecyl Oleate, Olea Europaea (ORGANIC Olive) Fruit Oil, Oryzanol, Schinziophyton Rautanenii Kernel Oil (ORGANIC), Silica, Theobroma Grandiflorum Seed Butter (ORGANIC), Tin Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Tocopherol

In terms of the texture, it is a little dry initially. But don't worry! You just need to use it a few times, and then it starts to soften up and glide on easily.

I am also happy to report that I've experienced zero chapping or irritation. The formula is genuinely nourishing, and stays on your lips for hours.

Now, on to the shades:

COOLA Tinted Mineral Liplux SPF 30 in Skinny Dip, Nude Beach, Tan Line, Summer Crush, Firecracker and Bonfire

Liplux comes in eight shades—I bought six of them, but now I need the other two!

These give your lips a balmy sheen, and range from sheer to more opaque, depending on the colour. The lighter ones let more of your natural lip tone peek through, while the darker ones are almost like a lipstick.

Oh, and you can also use these as blushes and highlighters!

Here's how they look on my arm:

And here's how they look on my lips!

Skinny Dip

Skinny Dip is described as a sheer tint. I do think it's sheer when I swatch it on my skin, but when it's on my lips, you can see it's a little bit lighter than my lip colour (probably from the zinc oxide). Still, I don't find it chalky or anything—it's more of a sheer glossy effect. This shade would be perfect as a highlighter, too.

Nude Beach

Nude Beach is described as a light pink tint. On my lips, it's actually hard to distinguish this from the previous one, but I think that's because my lip tone is naturally rosy. This shade is more opaque, and just a nice soft baby pink.

Tan Line

Tan Line is described as a rich coral tint. I'm all about the orangey colours, so of course I love this one! It's not super opaque, so your own lip tone will show through a bit. For that reason, I think it would work for just about every complexion, on lips and/or cheeks.

Summer Crush

Summer Crush is described as a deep pink tint. I don't find it dark at all, though, so if you love sheer raspberry tones, you'll love this. On me, it's sort of a "your lips, only better" colour. Very pretty, and another shade that should flatter everybody.

Firecracker

Firecracker is described as a bold red tint. This is the brightest shade of the bunch, but because it's still sheer, it takes on some of your natural lip tone. That's why it looks more pinky-red on me. I like this so much, I'd wear it instead of red lipstick!

Bonfire

COOLA Tinted Mineral Liplux SPF 30 Bonfire

Bonfire is described as a copper bronze tint. It's the deepest shade of the six, and on me turns out to be a warm brownish red. Very 1990s! I find this one feels very creamy, and is the most opaque and lipstick-like of the bunch.

The two other tints in the line are Purple Sky, a bright magenta, and Coral Reef, a coral pink.
