Editor’s Picks: 9 of the Best Makeup, Skin and Hair Products to Bring When You Go Camping

Summer is just around the corner (AMEN), and that means many of us will be spending a weekend or two in the wilderness enjoying some s'mores and lake swims. That's right—camping! 

You probably won't be surprised that I include makeup in my camping gear. Sometimes you need to look good outside of the forgiving glow of a campfire, y'know? 

Here's everything I consider essential for your next camping trip (and it's not all makeup, I swear!).

Plastic Makeup Bag

If there’s even a washroom facility, then chances are, there’ll be little space to put down your stuff—and wherever you end up resting it will be wet. 

Avoid the ick factor by getting a transparent plastic makeup bag, which makes it easy to see the contents and to dry items off after using them. I got mine at Shoppers Drug Mart, but similar options include the Sephora Collection Beauty On The Fly Bag and the Stephanie Johnson Miami Jumbo Zip Cosmetics Case.

On that note, don’t forget rubber flip flops for the showers!

Sunscreen

Practice sun safety. Pack a minimum SPF 30 for face and body, and layer it on frequently. 

Since you will be outdoors for literally your entire trip, also get a lip balm with SPF. There is no pain like sunburnt lips (plus, it eliminates the fun in kissing campfire guy, trust me!). 

I heart the non-whitening L’Oréal Sublime Sun Silky Sheer BB SPF 50 Face Lotion, which is tinted, and Hawaiian Tropic Lip Balm (now SPF 45+, not 30!). 

Dry Shampoo and a Brush

Ditch the bandana. If your hair isn’t stick-straight, you’ll regret not brushing it for four days. 

The simple fix: befriend a dry shampoo, pack a detangling brush and use them often.

Double-Duty Makeup

In a minivan packed full of friends, tents and coolers, real estate for toiletries is limited! So double up your prods: lipstick that works for lips and cheeks, a brow pencil that does liner too, etc.

Just remember to avoid anything with shimmer or sparkle. The outdoors demands an au naturel chic that glitter just cannot achieve.

A little coverage goes a long way in my willingness to forego 90 percent of my beauty routine. 

Get yourself a blendable stick foundation that can be applied one-handedly, and you'll have no need to screen the Instagram selfies that upload faster than you can make a s'more.

Waterproof Mascara

There's nothing like an unexpected fall into the lake to make you resemble one of the furry friends roaming though your campsite. 

Avoid raccoon eyes by coating your lashes with a waterproof mascara.

Face Wipes

Pleeeeeease wash your face at night, even if all you have is sweat and sunscreen sitting in those pores. 

Forget fumbling around with a flashlight while pouring makeup remover on a cotton pad—go straight for the makeup wipe. I like Yes To Carrots Fragrance Free Facial Wipes so much that I used all of mine up! 

Pre-moisturized wipes also make a great "field shower" for times when running water just can't happen. You know the drill (your tentmates will thank you). If you're prone to getting bug bites, just be sure to go fragrance-free.
