“People think I got all this surgery or did this or that. And you know what? We can do a scan of my face, darling. I'm scared of putting fillers into my lips. I wouldn't want to mess up my face."
That was Bella Hadid's response to her haters in a 2018 interview with InStyle.
Ever since the 24-year-old's modelling career took off (following in the footsteps of her older sister, Gigi), she has been surrounded by plastic surgery rumours.
And with 37 million Instagram followers and counting, that means she gets a lot of negative comments on social media. ("Blessings to you sweetheart. Jealousy is a cry for help that I wish I could help you with," is how she responded to one accusation.)
Even her mother, Real Housewives star Yolanda Hadid, has gone on the defensive. "None of my children have never done fillers or Botox or put anything foreign in their bodies," she wrote on Instagram. "They know better after seeing what I went through [removing my breast implants]."
But if that were true, how would Bella explain her very different look in the photos that have emerged from before she started modelling?
Heck, there's even been a significant change in more recent pictures, suggesting that more cosmetic work was indeed done.
So is Bella lying about getting injections and/or going under the knife?! Let's take a closer look at her beauty transformation over the years, from 2010 until now.
Bella in 2010
We'll start with Bella's very first red carpet, at 14 years old. Her natural hair colour is dirty blonde (see her eyebrows), so she'd already been dyeing it dark brown from a young age. ("I just have a darker personality," she told Allure. "And my sister being blonde and me being brunette, it's a good separation.") But while she may have kept the same hair to this day, we can't say the same for her facial features! Notice her distinctive nose, eye and brow shapes, for starters.
Bella in 2013
The same observations can be made from her high school yearbook photo, which was leaked on TikTok last year. At 16, she certainly looked a lot more polished and grown-up than most teenagers. But I doubt anyone would have guessed she'd blossom into the "most beautiful woman in the world," according to Dr. Julian De Silva's facial mapping research. While her lips seem quite plump here, she didn't have the small nose, sculpted cheeks and feline eyes that she has now.
Bella in 2014
It was in 2014, at age 17, that Bella started hitting the Hollywood events circuit as her older sister's date. The first thing I notice in this shot is how much fuller her face was back then. And then I realize that the bump she once had on the bridge of her nose (which you can see in 2010) has mysteriously disappeared. I also suspect her upper lip may have been pumped up, as it is fuller than the lower one (which is atypical) and projects outward.
And here we get more confirmation that her nose was altered. The upper portion of the bridge is definitely flatter, and there's a lot more definition around the tip. As we've seen countless times with other celebs, rhinoplasty changes the balance of your facial features to put more focus on the eyes—and she has really beautiful eyes.
Bella in 2015
Does she look like Jennifer Lawrence here or what?! (Specifically, JLaw during her brunette era circa 2012.) Apparently I'm not the only one to make that comparison—Bella told Vogue that it happens "multiple times a day." By now, she had her red carpet style on lock, and I can't stop staring. Not only is her skin utterly flawless, but her features are so incredibly symmetrical. No wonder she came closest to the Golden Ratio.
Bella in 2016
Here, the 19-year-old beauty switched up her usual severe style by wearing her hair long and loose, with tone-on-tone highlights. She also added a rarely-seen pop of pink on her lips. But I think her features are continuing to evolve beyond just the fuller lips, flatter bridge and bony-looking nasal tip. Her face isn't as round anymore, and we're starting to see more projected cheekbones.
Bella in 2017
By the following year, it became obvious that Bella's cheeks had been enhanced with filler... a whole lot of filler! I think there's been some sculpting underneath them, too—perhaps some fat taken out of her lower cheeks and jawline, which adds to the dramatic effect. Then, there's the matter of her eyebrows, which now lift up at the tails. Either that ponytail is way too tight, or we're seeing a brow lift or Botox!
Next, she rocked a bombshell look that was very off-brand for her (although I do quite like the voluminous hairstyle and muted red lipstick). Her cheeks don't seem as unnatural here, but with her hair over the brow that was "Spocking," we can't tell if the suspected Botox injections have calmed down. One thing's for sure—her upper lip is now plumper than ever.
Bella in 2018
If you ask me, Bella's best beauty move is always slicked-back hair, neutral makeup and glowy skin, and that's exactly what she went with here. Whatever injections she may have had in 2017 appear to have settled, so while her features are vastly different from just a few years prior, there's nothing that stands out as obviously "fake." Alas, that wasn't the case for long....
Bella in 2019
Yes, this is still Bella! There's something a little Melania Trump about this round of changes, no? Although she was only 22 years old here, there's now a "pulled" look to her eye area that's reminiscent of an aggressive old-school face lift. We're also back to the lifted brow tails again (which doesn't happen naturally!), and her teeth have been bleached whiter.
Bella in 2020
In 2020, she made only one red carpet appearance, and her look is almost as surprising as the year before. Along with her feline eyes, her face has become much narrower, with a new "V" shape to the jawline. It could be just weight loss, but given the other evidence of injections and surgery, I'm not buying it. I honestly think she took the cosmetic enhancements a step too far!
Bella in 2021
With no events yet this year, we have to rely on Instagram for celebrity sightings. And Bella has debuted a new look already: Ginger Spice hair. I'm into it, but I've gotta say. I'd NEVER guess this was the same person we saw way back in 2010!
Bella Hadid Before and After
Often, it can be hard to tell whether a celebrity really tinkered with her face or if the changes were just from normal aging. Not so with Bella. Comparing these two photos side-by-side, it's just not possible to achieve her new look without the help of needles and a knife!
Unsurprisingly, plastic surgeons agree—and there's a long list of procedures that they believe she's undergone.
"Miss Hadid appears to have had fillers to enhance her cheek structure, undergone a rhinoplasty and received lip fillers to accentuate her lip volume," Dr. Norman Rowe told Life & Style. "Also, it seems like she's underdone either a surgical brow lift or use of neuromodulators [Botox]."
"It is clear that she had rhinoplasty," Dr. James Marotta told Page Six. "Her upper eyelids appear more open and her brow arch has changed. Her face appears more slender, angular and less rounded. It could be the result of filler injections or facial plastic surgery."
But that's not all. "Her jawline is more defined and her cheeks are less full," Dr. Matthew Schulman told Radar Online. "This can be achieved with buccal fat pad reduction, or removal of some fat from the cheeks. Her chin is more prominent and may be the result of a chin implant as well."
I'm pretty sure this is the most extensive list of enhancements we've ever seen in a Before & After!
And it's important to remember that. Years ago, I stumbled upon this Twitter account documenting Bella's changing looks, and they really said it best: "The only reason I created this account isn't to hate on her. It's just that so many girls are getting low self-esteem after seeing her pics."
In other words, the celebs we idolize as being preternaturally beautiful usually get a little help (or in Bella's case, a lot of help!) along the way.
