Haircuts for fine curly hair

Q: Hello Bill! I turn 30 this week, and I am in search of my "Life Cut." I have naturally curly/wavy, medium-brown hair that is fine in texture.

Sara's hair is fine and naturally curly/wavy.

Since I have an 11-month-old baby girl, I have a very low-maintenance style and alternate between wearing it down, or throwing it up in a messy bun, and only occasionally opt for a blowout.

Sara usually wears her hair down with minimal styling.

I have dyed my hair since college—a medium reddish brown or strawberry blonde, which I think suits my colouring.

Sara dyes her hair a reddish tone.

However, I have since stopped the full colour, as it was starting to damage my curls too much.

Perhaps just highlights or semi-permanents might be a healthier option? I have quite a few greys coming in, but I am trying to work with it. Thanks!

Sara suspects that dyeing her hair has damaged her curls.

A: Sara, your hair looks great in all of the photos that you submitted. You have very pretty, versatile hair.

In my mind, a "Life Cut" is more for people with problem hair that is limited in its ability to change. Your hair is very easy to change, and you do not need a cut that defines you. You should be having fun with your pretty hair.

With properly placed layers, your natural curl will look amazing:

Using a wand to add a bit of movement on naturally dried hair would be perfect:

I think this would be an incredible bang for you, with long layers:

If you are to keep your hair long, I would suggest a semi-permanent colour. Choose a lighter colour than your own. This will stain the white strands, add depth, and act as a highlight.

A short cut like this is a wonderful option:

If you do go short, I would go crazy for this look—dark roots and caramel highlights:

Yes, this will dry out your hair, but who cares when it is this short.

Have fun and it can be cut out when you are tired of it.
