Reviewed: Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet, the Ultimate Matte Liquid Lipstick

Especially if you love reds.

Red lips are on my mind lately, mostly because I can't stop playing “Style” by Taylor Swift.

Say what you will about her, but that line—"I got that red lip classic thing that you like"—is catchy as hell. (Yes, I am a sucker for a beauty angle.)

Now, I have no idea what red lipstick Tay Tay likes to wear... but if I were to choose one right now, it'd be Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet. No question about it.

Three of the six Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet shades.

These are the matte liquid lipsticks I mentioned as one of my 30 favourite new beauty products of 2014, which is QUITE the honour. (I just didn't get around to a full review until now... so here you go!)

As their name implies, these really do go on velvety-smooth, like buttah.

And similar to other liquid lipsticks, you get a whack-load of pigment—the difference being that it dries down to the softest, prettiest matte finish. And matte is all I want to wear lately.

Compared to Hourglass Opaque Rouge, which is probably the most well-known matte liquid lipstick, I like Rouge Edition Velvet a kajillion times better. (I never did understand the hype over Hourglass.) These lippies are way more comfortable to wear, not at all drying, won't cling to flakes on your lips, and come in the nicest, most flattering shades.

There are six in total, which seem to lean red (even the ones that aren't described that way). The three you see here are, from left to right, 01 Personne Ne Rouge, 04 Peach Club and 08 Grand Cru.

The other shades include 02 Frambourjoise, 06 Pink Pong and 07 Nude-ist. (I don't think 03 Hot Pepper or 05 Ole Flamingo! are available in Canada.)

Here's a look at them on the lips:

01 Personne Ne Rouge

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Lipstick in 01 Personne Ne Rouge.

This shade, 01 Personne Ne Rouge, is your classic red. But see? It's a soft red, so way more wearable than a traditional red lipstick.

04 Peach Club

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in 04 Peach Club.

This shade, 04 Peach Club, is my absolute favourite! It's super-unique and I actually have nothing like it in my massive makeup collection. It's also what I was wearing here. See what I mean now about it leaning a bit red?

08 Grand Cru

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in 08 Grand Cru.

This colour, 08 Grand Cru, is the most dramatic and vampy of them all, and I'd totally wear it for a fancy evening occasion. I find it a bit strong for daytime against my pale colouring, but the stained effect is amazing and so on-trend.

If you're at all a lipstick wearer, I think you'll love these—they even have an unheard of 4.5 out of 5 rating on MakeupAlley! I can't quite believe they're a drugstore product myself. Let me know what you think?
