After being cancelled last year, the Cannes Film Festival made a glorious return for 2021—and I couldn't be more thrilled to pore over all the celebrity beauty photos. (Finally, we don't have to rely on behind-the-scenes Instagram shots!)
Just like where we left off in 2019, this red carpet is all about the glam. Think: elegant updos, sophisticated makeup, and of course, radiant skin.
Here are the best close-ups from this year's festivities.
Whatever she may or may not have had done, Bella's face is so mesmerizing—especially when she scrapes her hair back like this and sculpts her features with neutral-toned makeup. It's all so beautifully blended, and those fluttery lashes (on the top lids only) are the perfect finishing touch.
Bella is wearing: Moisturizer • Primer • Foundation in 3 Neutral • Concealer in 3 Cool Rosy • Powder in 3 Neutral and 4 Neutral • Blush in 028 Atrice • Eyeshadow in 649 Nude Dress and 689 Mitzah • Lash primer • Mascara in 090 Black • Brow pencil in 003 Brown • Lipstick in 100 Nude Look Matte • Lip balm in 000 Universal
I may be alone on this one, but I actually like the bow in Diane's half-up hair... I think it gives this look such a youthful, girly vibe. Usually, she does her own makeup, but not this time. While the shades are still her favourite neutrals, you can see the eyeshadow is amped up, with baby cat eyes (a.k.a. kitten eyeliner).
Diane is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Eye cream • Sunscreen/primer • Primer • Foundation • Illuminator • Concealer • Colour corrector • Bronzer • Powder • Blush in Pillow Talk • Contour and highlighter • Highlighter in Spotlight • Eyeshadow in Pillow Talk • Eyeliner in Pillow Talk • Mascara in Super Black • Brow pencil • Brow gel • Lip liner in Pillow Talk • Matte lipstick in Pillow Talk • Glossy lipstick in Pillow Talk • Lip gloss in Pillow Talk
We're used to seeing Jessica in bright colours (remember this blue, and this yellow?). I still think those suit her better than black, but she made the most of it with a romantic low ponytail and a brick-red lipstick that emphasizes her pale skin. It's a bit wintery and Gothic for the middle of summer, but I'm okay with this.
When you're Candice, you can rock the simplest of red carpet looks—barely-there makeup and a ballerina bun—and look completely stunning. I especially like the little gold highlights at the inner corners of her eyes.
Candice is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Foundation • Powder • Blush in Love Glow • Contour and highlighter • Eyeshadow in The Sophisticate • Mascara in Super Black • Lip liner in Supersize Me • Lip gloss in Pillow Talk
Could Isabelle be any cooler?! Of course, I'd love to see her eyes and not the sunglasses, but this pair fit her so perfectly, and only add to her 'je ne sais quois' aura. I love her tousled red waves, too, and her matching warm red lipstick.
Marion is still one of my faves, even when I struggle with her outfit choices. (Two words: bike shorts. Just because they're Chanel, that don't make it right!) Yes, the hairstyle is unexpected. too, but she has often worn futuristic shapes like this over the years. Makeup-wise, I love the peach lipstick, but I'd definitely even out her brows to make them less tadpole-shaped.
Angèle might be my newest beauty crush (she's a Belgian pop star who is really big in France). Is anyone else thinking baby Brigitte Bardot? Cat eyes and baby bangs seem to be her thing, along with a warm honey-blonde hair colour. Obsessed!
For years, Lou has been the epitome of the effortless "French girl" look, and this ensemble is no exception. Instead of a fussy updo, she wore her waves loose and natural, with lash-skimming bangs. All I can detect on her face is a bit of lip stain and black liner.
Andie is well-known for her signature dark curls, but now she's embracing grey hair, and it looks great with this white dress and orangey-red lipstick. The only disconnect I have here is with the eye makeup, which seems too heavy (especially with her low brows).
Andie is wearing: Lipstick in 311 Be Brilliant
I love that Didi (who is a French model) rocked this voluminous Afro, along with a makeup look that could be straight out of a 1970s fashion magazine. It's all about the 360-degree black liner dipping into points at her tear ducts, with bold berry blush and glossy lips.
Helen is a walking ray of sunshine in this vibrant yellow gown, which brightens up her whole look. (A string of Dolce & Gabbana diamonds around your neck will do that as well!) I've got no issues with her makeup, but this would be so much better if her updo was smooth and sleek.
Chiara, a.k.a. The Blonde Salad, brought a Boho touch to her red carpet look, and I love it. The two braids add interest to her beachy waves, and since the dress is strapless, it doesn't feel too busy. She really has the most gorgeous eyes, and they're complemented by the fringe of lashes and textured, brushed-up brows.
