Last week, I had my makeup done at a beauty event. As the guy was meticulously applying layers and layers of eyeshadow, I heard the dreaded words:
"Your skin is so dehydrated."
At first, I felt like the victim of beauty shaming. Who was he to pass judgement on my skin's water levels? Isn't everyone who lives in Canada, in March, dehydrated?
Then I thought, well, maybe my skin is drier because I stepped up the Retin-A.
And then, finally, I figured out the real problem. I hadn't been using my HydrExtreme lately.
If you've been reading here for a while, then you've probably heard me mention it on multiple occasions.
Consonant first launched HydrExtreme back in 2012, and I've been a devoted fan ever since. (Well, except when I'm doing my due diligence to test out other products, like at the time of this makeup artist incident. You can bet I went back to HydrExtreme that very night—and right away, I saw a difference.)
I knew it already, but that experience just re-confirmed in my mind: HydrExtreme is the BEST all-natural hydrating serum.
Heck, I think it's the best hydrating serum, period. So voilà, it's high time the product got its own devoted blog post.
Consonant HydrExtreme Ingredients
I was initially attracted to HydrExtreme because it is 100 percent natural, and has an amazingly short ingredients list:
Cassia Angustifolia Seed Polysaccharide, Vegetable Glycerine.
Just two things. Two! When has that ever happened in the history of skincare products?
Cassia angustifolia, also known as senna, is a polysaccharide-rich plant, native to India, that has historically been used as a laxative. In skincare, the extract is a conditioning agent that acts like a natural hyaluronic acid, delivering moisture, increasing elasticity and assisting in tissue repair and protection.
In fact, cassia angustifolia seed extract has been clinically proven to deliver superior and longer-lasting hydration benefits compared to hyaluronic acid! In my experience with HydrExtreme, this has been 100 percent true. (Here are more of my thoughts on hyaluronic acid.) It also has an anti-inflammatory action that can benefit conditions such as acne and eczema.
The other ingredient in HydrExtreme is glycerin (glycerine?), a lightweight hydrator that helps attract water into the skin. But it needs to be with the cassia angustifolia seed extract. The reason being, unless you live in a humid environment where glycerin can pull moisture from the air, it will draw it from the deeper layers of your skin instead, drying you from the inside out. Because the cassia extract is more occlusive, it helps create a barrier against water loss. So put both ingredients together and it's the perfect combination! No icky petroleum or mineral oil required.
Consonant HydrExtreme Results
So now it makes total sense to me that the other serum I'd been testing, NiaSerum, was drying me out. It contains just glycerin and niacinamide, so nothing occlusive to stop water loss. Well, maybe that's okay for people in Australia, where it's made, but not wintry Canada!
But back to HydrExtreme. I think we've established that it works—and it works really well!
Right away, it softens any dehydration lines, especially under the eyes, and I've found the moisture stays with you for much longer than with other products I've tried (hyaluronic acid, I'm looking at you).
It also feels like a dream to apply. The texture is a clear, watery liquid that's not greasy at all, and sinks in quickly.
Who Should Use Consonant HydrExtreme
Every skin type, from sensitive to oily, would be suitable for this serum.
People with oily or acne-prone skin always worry about creams clogging their pores or making their skin too greasy, so this is actually the ideal way to get your hydration in.
And if your skin is on the drier side, HydrExtreme is nice to layer underneath or mix with your regular moisturizing cream for an extra hydration boost. I usually do that in the winter, and then in the summertime, I'll just wear it alone under sunscreen—it's that hydrating.
For eczema, dermatitis or extreme dryness, you can apply it more often, a few times daily.
I'm pretty sure I am now on my fourth or fifth bottle of HydrExtreme, and would bathe in this stuff if I could. I'll just call it my Life Serum—can't live without it!
