Last week, we kicked off the 2021 award season with the Golden Globes. Now, another round of beauty looks are coming your way, courtesy of the annual Critics’ Choice Awards.
Usually, celebs descend on Los Angeles, but this year’s ceremony took place both in-person and virtually. And thanks to Instagram, we get to see all the skin, hair and makeup close-ups (plus the products that were used to create them).
These were the best beauty moments of the night.
Zendaya at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards
Zendaya epitomizes effortless glam in this loose, curly top knot and matte, peachy makeup. But it's the expertly-drawn winged liner at the outer corners of her eyes that really makes it spectacular. It’s sharp on one side, diffused on the other—that takes skill!
Zendaya is wearing: Face mask • Eye mask • Serum • Eye cream • Foundation in 425 Bisque W • Blush in Rose Sable • Highlighter in Vibrant Lilac • Contour in 420 Bisque N • Eyeshadow palette in Taupe Craze (shades 2 and 3) • Lipstick in 404 Hot and Cold (as eyeshadow) • Eyeliner • Mascara in Black • Brow pencil in Chocolate and Light Brown • Brow mascara in Transparent • Lip gloss in 06 Simmer
Julia Garner at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards
As soon as I saw Julia, I knew her makeup was by Hung Vanngo—he really has a signature look, doesn’t he? I can’t get enough of the smoky navy eyeshadow, overdrawn glossy lips and perfectly straight brows. It’s a lot, but somehow it doesn’t feel heavy.
Julia is wearing: Lotion • Moisturizer • Eye cream • Foundation in BR22 • Concealer in 10 • Bronzer in Soleil Tan Bronze Universel • Powder in 20 • Highlighter • Blush in Malice • Eyeshadow primer • Eyeshadow in 312 Quiet Revolution • Eyeliner in 924 Fervent Blue • Mascara in 10 Noir • Brow pencil in 20 Blond Cendré • Brow gel in 350 Transparent • Lip balm • Lipstick in 116 Dream
Yara Shahidi at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards
Yara might just have the most flawless, poreless, glowiest skin in Hollywood. Her hairstylist took inspiration from the embroidered dress and weaved some thick blue thread through her updo (see more of it here). The makeup carries on the theme, with 360-degree cat eyes in the same shade, framed by fluffy lashes.
Yara is wearing: Foundation in 4 Warm and 4.5 Neutral • Concealer in 4 Warm Olive and 5 Neutral • Contour • Blush in 028 Actrice • Powder in 060 Light Mocha • Eyeshadow in 279 Denim • Eyeliner in 296 Matte Blue • Mascara • Brow pencil in 004 Black • Lip balm • Lipstick in 339 Sillage Satin
Anya Taylor-Joy at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards
I wasn’t sure about it at the Globes, but now I think Anya’s platinum hair might be growing on me. Or maybe it’s because she’s making a more dramatic statement here, with a rich, matte plum lip, contoured cheeks and a strong middle part.
Anya is wearing: Foundation in 0 Neutral • Concealer in 0 Neutral • Powder in 4 Neutral • Blush in 250 Bal • Eyeshadow in 649 Nude Dress • Mascara • Brow pencil in 001 Universal Brown • Lip liner in 943 Euphoric • Lipstick in 975 Opera Matte
Andra Day at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards
Andra’s look was all about playing up her perfectly plump lips. While I’m not sure about the ring of lip liner, I love the lip colour itself, as well as the subtle draped blush and soft shadow accentuating her eyes. The wavy side pony is kind of ‘00s Beyoncé, but I’m okay with that!
Andra is wearing: Foundation in BD31 and BD41 • Concealer in 30 and 40 • Powder in 20 • Highlighter in Perlescent and Rosée • Blush in Rouge Profond • Eyeshadow in Tissé Vendôme and Codes Élégants • Mascara in Noir Black • Brow pencil in Brun Naturel • Brow gel in Transparent • Lip liner in Nude Brun and Pivoine • Lipstick in Chance • Lip gloss in Excitation
Amanda Seyfried at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards
Amanda chose a menswear-inspired outfit, so of course she went in the opposite direction with her makeup, rocking a bold and feminine neon-pink lip. (I miss bright lipstick!) Her intricate updo (see it from more angles here) is a nod to the 1920s.
Amanda is wearing: Essence • Primer • Foundation • Highlighter in Luminous Gold • Blush in Cedar Rose • Eyeshadow in Smokey Chic • Eyeliner in Noir Intense • Mascara in Black • Brow pencil • Lip liner in Rose Lancôme • Lipstick in 388 Rose Lancôme
Regina King at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards
Regina’s waist-length rope ponytail is truly a sight to behold. Actually, it’s TWO ponytails—and I think her hairstylist definitely succeeded in his goal to “to go for clean and chic in the front with a surprise ‘party’ in the back,” as he told Vogue.
Regina is wearing: Face mist • Essence • Face oil • Primer • Foundation in Medium Deep 22 and Medium Deep 24 • Concealer in MD22 • Under-eye powder in Medium • Powder in Medium 3 • Highlighter in Divine Rose • Eyeshadow in Sublime • Eyeliner in Xtreme Black • Eyeliner in Blitz Blue • Mascara • False lashes • Lip liner in Manhattan • Tinted lip balm in Nude Venus
Vanessa Kirby at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards
Instead of matching her lipstick to her dress, Vanessa did a soft peachy-pink (which I love), pairing it with feline liner, chunky lashes and some seriously textured brows. It’s such a graphic look that keeping her hair straight and neatly tucked behind her ears was the right choice.
Vanessa is wearing: Moisturizer • Foundation in 10 Beige • Blush in Aura Pink • Contour in Light • Eyeliner in 512 Noir Profond • Mascara in 10 Noir • Lip balm • Lip liner in Peachy Nude • Lipstick in Adrienne
Ashley Park at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards
Ashley gave old Hollywood style a fresh twist by wearing her side-swept waves and smoky eye makeup with an unexpected mint green dress. Her glowing skin (including on her collarbones!) adds to the summery vibe.
Ashley is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Foundation in 4 Warm Olive • Concealer in 3.5 Neutral • Powder in 4 Neutral • Blush in 028 Actrice • Contour • Highlighter in Glitz • Eyeshadow in 689 Mitzah • Eyeliner in 091 Matte Black • Mascara • False lashes • Brow pencil in 001 Universal Brown • Lip balm • Lip liner in 593 Brown Fig • Lipstick in 241 Pink Sakura
Emma Corrin at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards
What do you wear with over-the-top Schiaparelli earrings? Why, a boyish hairstyle inspired by young Leonardo DiCaprio, and punky makeup that channels ‘90s Kate Moss. Emma’s look is not for everyone, but I think she makes this work.
Emma is wearing: Face oil • Moisturizer • Foundation in Ivory • Concealer • Powder • Blush in Glow and Papaya • Eyeshadow in Silky Rose and Matte Cocoa • Eyeliner in Black • Eyeliner in Sparkling Black • Mascara in Black • Brow gel in Transparent • Lipstick in Beige Bali
