Dove Cameron doesn't just have dry skin—she describes it as "aggressively dry skin."
It's been that way from the time she was a child (she's now 24), and she has followed a dedicated skincare routine ever since.
"It's so hard for me to keep my skin hydrated," the Liv and Maddie and Descendants star told Harper's Bazaar. "The most important thing about taking care of your skin so that you look good longer is moisture. [But] I have to go to like, the ultimate; I have to do the most just to keep my skin hydrated."
That means she layers on serums, oils and creams, and is even known to sleep in a sheet mask on occasion. And given the choice between a lightweight or heavy moisturizer, she'll always choose the heavy one. "I feel like if I wear a lightweight moisturizer, I'm just putting it on nine times in a day... but if I wear a heavy moisturizer, I put it on like three times in a day," she explained to Marie Claire.
But topical products are just part of her regimen. Dove also believes in hydrating from the inside out with not only water and a clean diet, but an array of supplements as well.
That's why you'd never suspect she suffers from dryness. In fact, she has one of the dewiest, most flawless complexions in Hollywood!
Here's everything Dove does to ensure her skin is well-moisturized and glowing.
Dove’s Morning Skincare Routine
Shu Uemura Anti/Oxi+ Pollutant & Dullness Clarifying Cleansing Oil: "The first thing that I do is use this Shu Uemura oil-based cleanser. I'll never stop talking about how great it is. I have not used anything else for two years now."
Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum: "I will pretty quickly put on my favourite serum, which is this Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum. I rave about this stuff. It just makes it bright and makes it feel taut and bouncy. I don't know, it just makes my skin feel really nice. I just notice such a big difference in my skin when I use it."
Clarins Double Serum Complete Age Control Concentrate: "This is my second favourite serum, Hydric + Lipidic System, and it's really, really nice. I kind of change up my serums the most. I've never used Clarins before, but it's a really great serum. It's this amber-coloured serum."
3. Face Slapping:
"An ex-esthetician taught me when I was much younger, where you wake up your skin's circulatory system, and I think it helps the products seep in. It might just wake your skin up and be like hello, have colour."
4. Face Oil:
Healthy Priority Natural Products Vitamin E: "Basically I've been putting this vitamin E oil on my skin for the last three or four months. Changed my life. It's so thick. This is definitely not for people who don't want oily skin, but for me, it's perfect."
Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream: "This is my favourite daily moisturizer, this Weleda Skin Food. I wanted something really, really thick and intense for a time that I was super dry, and somebody recommended this, and it's so good. I use it all the time now because not only can I not find anything thicker, I'll sleep in it a lot as well. Also, it gives me such a nice glow underneath my makeup. I know you're gonna be like, 'Oh my God, that's so much oil for daytime,' but I swear, my skin, I think I have really big pores and it just eats everything."
6. Eye Cream:
Beautycounter Countertime Ultra Renewal Eye Cream: "After that, I will go in with my eye cream. So this is from Beautycounter. I've been using it for a while."
Dr. Barbara Sturm Sun Drops SPF 50: "If I'm going out into the direct sun, I will use this Sturm Molecular Cosmetics Sun Drops SPF 50. I will put this on after my oil, after my moisturizer, and I'll let that set for 15 minutes just to get into my skin. I'll put a few drops of this—not under my eyes because it stings my eyes sometimes—but I'll put it all over my face before my makeup. I don't notice any difference with this under my makeup. It doesn't make it gross, it doesn't make it cakey."
Kate Somerville UncompliKated SPF Soft Focus Makeup Setting Spray SPF 50: "But also, big, big fan of this Kate Somerville UncompliKated SPF 50 Spray. If you've already done your makeup and you're like, 'Fuck, I need to put sunscreen on, I'm going to burn,' put this stuff all over your face. It smells like lavender, and it actually kind of doubles as a setting spray. It's really bizarre. For some reason, it just makes everything glowy and come together."
Yves Saint Laurent All Hours Foundation: "So this is one of my favourite foundations, this All Hours YSL foundation. I will start with just two pumps of this. My skin is actually a slightly different tone than my neck... so I will sometimes use a bit of a warmer foundation and then I'll use a lighter concealer and then a neutral powder, and it just kind of blends. But if I match to my neck, I look a little crazy."
Bobbi Brown Under Eye Corrector: "This is the Bobbi Brown Corrector, in peach. I have really dark circles under my eyes and I don't sleep very well, or at all. I really did not know the power of a good colour corrector. I think it's an eyeshadow primer, but I have been using it like a concealer all over my face for years now. I love this stuff. It just smooths and lays a really nice foundation."
Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer: "Which brings me to my favourite concealer, which I think is everybody's favourite concealer, the Tarte Shape Tape. This stuff is nuts... you don't need very much of it, as I'm literally laying my whole face with it."
bareMinerals Mineral Veil Finishing Powder: "So this next step has become my new favourite: bareMinerals Mineral Veil. It's like a light pink, so it's not skin-coloured. So I will get a little bit of it on the Beautyblender and I'll just dab it on my wrist [first] 'cause I'm not trying to look too powdery."
Kaja Cheeky Stamp Blendable Blush: "This is from Kaja... and it's this really cute little thing, it comes in a little heart and you're supposed to stamp it on your cheeks—you know, a little heart stamp. It's really cute. But my face is small, and so I can't really do the heart thing without it going all over the place. But I just use my [fingertip]. Always smile, to know where your apples of your cheeks are."
Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand Easy Highlighter: "My last step for my skin is this tried and true Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand Easy Highlighter, and I'll just get a little bit of it [on each] cheek. Tiny bit on my chin, weirdly. Tip of my nose, bridge of my nose, and just up there [on my forehead]."
13. Lip Balms:
Dr. Barbara Sturm Lip Balm: "This is my next step, which is lip balm. This is another Barbara Sturm product. I just love her. I'm a big fan."
Kiehl's Lip Balm #1: "I wear this Kiehl's every day. It's my favourite thing in the world. It's like a lip balm and a lip gloss all in one."
Burt's Bees Hydrating Lip Oil: "And then I'll go in with this Burt's Bees Hydrating Lip Oil over the top as sort of in place of a gloss, 'cause gloss can dry me out. I'll just give it a little bit of a sheen."
14. Face Mist:
Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Chamomile and Lavender: "This is the Mario Badescu Aloe, Chamomile and Lavender Spray, and that's it. That's what people use to refresh their skin throughout the day, but I feel like it just sets in, and in a second it'll give me a really dewy kinda glow."
Dove’s Nighttime Skincare Routine
Slip Pure Silk Headband: "So my first step in getting unready is to slip on this super cute [headband]. Where's this from? It's from Slip. I love Slip."
2. Hand Wash:
Hand Wash: "Okay, so first off, I wash my hands. I've definitely gotten more conscious about that since being in quarantine, but also, I don't know, I'm such a germaphobe. I feel like you touch so many things, there's so much dirt and oil and stuff like that. So I never like to touch my face until I've washed my hands."
Shu Uemura Anti/Oxi+ Pollutant & Dullness Clarifying Cleansing Oil: "Now that I have clean hands... I never do a pre-cleanse, this is all I ever need. This is my favourite cleanser ever. So this cleansing oil is literally the consistency of a light olive oil. It's so oily. It is so good for my skin. I find that I don't get blackheads, I don't get anything, and it just melts my makeup off like nothing. So I do this before I take my eye makeup off. I don't know why, there's no real reason."
4. Makeup Removers:
Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes: "I've said that I don't use makeup wipes in the past. What I meant to say is that I don't use it on my skin, skin. I definitely need makeup wipes to get all of my eye makeup off. These are my absolute favourite makeup removing wipes, the Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes. Every other makeup removing wipe I try to use, it makes my eyes hurt. Maybe their towels are really rough, maybe their solution just is not very strong, but I find myself rubbing my eyes to the point that they hurt."
Noxzema Classic Clean Original Deep Cleansing Cream: "It's this really cheap, old-fashioned, 1950s cold cream cleanser. I started using it when I was eight years old, when I played Toto in [the] original production of The Wizard of Oz. They didn't get a real dog, they got me. They put me in a zip-up suit, and it was the time of my life. But the only thing that could get the face paint off at the end of the day was Noxzema Cream. My skin was so smooth after that, I just never stopped using it. So now to get makeup off at the end of a big press day, Noxzema facial. Secret weapon."
Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum: "Next up, once I've gotten my eye makeup off, is this unbelievable serum. I use this stuff night and day, and I use it just directly following my cleansing ritual. I kind of start on my cheeks and I work my way up. I always feel like you should put everything on your skin in an upward motion. I just let that kind of sit for a minute. It's a little jelly but it's so nice. It makes it feel so moist and plump. I don't even know what hyaluronic serum does, I just know that you are absolutely supposed to work it into your skincare routine."
Mario Badescu Vitamin C Serum: "Next up, I've been using lately, just since quarantine, this Mario Badescu Vitamin C Serum. Vitamin C is really great for brightening your skin, and I notice when I use that every other night, my skin is really bright and really responsive and really supple when I wake up in the morning."
6. Face Slapping:
"I learned this trick on set when I was like 18 years old, on a movie. Basically, I was working with this makeup artist who used to be an esthetician and she insisted on taking our makeup off every night because she said that she was responsible for the state of our skin and she didn't want to be covering up zits. And I was like, 'I'm not gonna complain. You do your thing.' But she took [our] makeup off every night and then she put some serums in, and what she would do—the first time she did it, I was like, 'What the fuck is happening?'—but she would work her way up our face and sort of softly slap us with her fingertips. And she said it just brought blood flow to the surface and it helped the serum seep in. Maybe she was just taking out her aggression on us, I don't know. I still do it. It kinda feels nice, weirdly."
7. Face Oil:
Healthy Priority Natural Products Vitamin E: "It is just straight-up vitamin E oil. This is just what I got from Amazon. I started doing it after I got off set sometimes, like if my skin was really dry. I was just shooting a movie in Mexico and it was like I was molting. And so I would take all my makeup off on set in the makeup trailer, and then I would put all this vitamin E oil on. I just let it set in my skin while I was on my way home. I love to really saturate my skin with oil and product before I go to sleep so I can let it soak in overnight. So I'll let that sit and do its thing, live its life. I kind of let it sit for five minutes."
Tata Harper Crème Riche Velvet Moisturizing Cream: "It's super, super rich. I always say it's like pancake batter. It smells unbelievable... and I'll just work it in all over. I put it on top of my eyes as well. I always see people skip their eyelid and that freaks me out. I mean, this skin [on the upper lid] is just as thin as this skin [on the lower lid], right? We should be giving it just as much attention."
Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream: "Every once in a while, especially if I'm travelling, at night I will switch to this Weleda Skin Food which everybody swears by. It has hardly any ingredients in it, like it's just so simple. I'll put this on my face before I do my makeup sometimes even during the day and it will give me this really intense glow under my makeup. And it's really cheap."
9. Eye Creams:
Dr. Barbara Sturm Eye Cream: "After that, I go in with this unbelievable Sturm Eye Cream. As you guys can tell, I'm a big Barbara Sturm fan. I'm a big eye cream fan. I don't know how different it is from regular moisturizer, but I enjoy it. It just kinda reminds me to give my eyes some extra care."
L'Occitane Immortelle Precious Eye Balm: "After that, right now I'm using this L'Occitane Immortelle eye cream. I'll just dab it on, never drag."
10. Eye Roller:
Eye Roller: "And then I will use this guy, it's this little under eye roller.... I don't really think the rose quartz does anything, but it is cute and I do think that the rolling effect helps get the product into the skin. It can kind of de-puff your eyes as well. And I'll sometimes even take it up, like above my eyebrow, just because that area kind of deserves some extra attention."
12. Lip Balm:
Burt's Bees Hydrating Lip Oil: "Lastly... I have to moisturize my lips before I go to bed because a bitch is dry. This is the Burt's Bees Hydrating Lip Oil. Again, oil-based. I love some oil. And it looks like a gloss. It's a little extra to go to bed, but it just stays on my lips for ages. So most nights that is where I will end my skincare routine."
13. Lash and Brow Oil:
365 Everyday Value Avocado Oil: "Lately, just since quarantine has started, I've been using this pure avocado oil just on a little brush... and I work it into my brows. Just a little bit to kinda condition my brows and my lashes. I did not know that we were all supposed to be conditioning our brows and lashes like our hair. I mean, it makes sense, right? Like we condition the hair on our head, moisturize our skin, why wouldn't we? Why would we skip the lashes and brows, guys?"
14. Overnight Masks:
Lancôme Rénergie Lift Multi-Action Double-Wrapping Cream Mask: "And then, if I want to go one step further or if I'm feeling like my skin is really, really dry, this is my ultimate beauty hack trick. This is something that I swear by, besides water and sleep first and foremost, and staying out of the sun. This thing is unbelievable. I'm not affiliated with any of these brands. But I will put this on my face and... it comes in two, so it just sits on your face and you sleep in it. It will change your life. This one has cream, so it doesn't drip all over the place. It's not messy, it's really like suctioning onto your face. I will put that on and I'll go to sleep and that's it. That's my whole thing."
Mantra Mask Hemp CBD Collagen Facial Sheet Mask: "This stuff is great. I think I got this at Anthropologie on a whim, and it's unbelievable. I would say that's my number one beauty hack... to sleep in a sheet mask. If you can, obviously. If not, wander around the house for like eight hours in a sheet mask."
Dove’s Skincare Treatments
Kate Somerville: "I like Kate Somerville, but any sort of basic facial will do."
Tracie Martyn: "I've gone to Tracie Martyn where they do the electro-current thing— where they lift your face with an electro-current and you almost taste metal in your mouth 'cause there's electro-currents going through your face. I feel like that's really crazy."
Dove’s Diet, Exercise and Lifestyle
"I tend to eat really clean, because I feel better when I do. I always like to start my morning with loads of liquids before I have anything solid to eat. So I like to have lots of water, lots of vitamins via some fresh-pressed juice or some smoothies depending on how I'm feeling, and then a little bit of caffeine. What is in [my smoothie]: blueberries, bananas, spinach, protein powder, ice, almond milk and then a couple scoops of collagen. It's really tasty, and it's a nice way to get fruits, veggies, vitamins and all that at the very top of your day on an empty stomach. That's when things are absorbed the best. I often like to have a little bit of fruit as a snack just to keep my energy up."
VitaJuwel Wellness Water Bottle: "The most important thing for me is water. I feel like if I don't have loads and loads of water, I can definitely see it in my skin. 'Cause moisture is not just outside in. I would say it's mostly inside out. And it's annoying to have to pee all day but it's worth it. It's good for you—your whole body. I don't know anything that fights acne and dry skin better than drinking a shit ton of water."
Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides: "Mostly it's good for your hair, your skin, your nails. But I have this really weird thing where I'm really terrified to have joint issues. I don't know why that is."
Bulletproof Brain Octane C8 MCT Oil: "And then we've most recently been using this Bulletproof Brain Octane C8 MCT Oil, which is supposed to be really good for your brain."
Vitamin E: "I've been taking a lot of vitamin E supplements lately, and I'm a big believer that if you take it internally it's going to show up externally."
Fish Oil: "Everybody always says it's really good for your skin."
Turmeric: "Turmeric is really good for clearing up inflammation."
Magnesium: "When I'm gonna go to bed, I'll usually have some tea... and some magnesium, which is really good for your body, your heart, your mind, the whole situation."
Melatonin: "A lot of time I will have a little melatonin before I go to sleep."
Exerpeutic ExerWork 2000i Desk Bike: "I only tend to work out five or six days a week... in quarantine, I probably only work out like four days a week. This is a bike that I got I think from Amazon. I literally got the most basic, simple one that I could find."
"I got these really funny little ankle weights during quarantine and they've been my best friend for booty and leg work. So usually I will start with some squats and then I'll go into some donkey kicks and things like that, and I will end with some ab work. I just do basic stuff that I feel like I've picked up along the way."
"I'm a big exercise junkie, meaning I actually hate exercising. And so I have to find the thing that makes me like exercising. My most recent obsession is rock climbing. I'm not a pro. Now that I've started bouldering, I exercise more than I would because I'm like addicted to bouldering. 'Cause it feels like you're gonna go play a game or something. Like it just feels way more engaging than other workouts."
"I always like to face the sunlight whenever I stretch. And there's no method to it. I absolutely just go with whatever feels good that day because it's much less to me about a routine or about setting a goal and it's much more just about feeling good that day. I used to hate stretching. Now, it's the only way I can start my morning."
Slip Silk Pillowcase: "I love to sleep with a silk eye mask and these silk pillows, and I started doing that because silk actually can't retain bacteria. And so it's really good for your skin and it makes you look a little less tired in the morning, which I need help with because I'm always travelling."
