Elle Women in Hollywood Awards 2017: The Best Skin, Hair and Makeup Looks on the Red Carpet
This year's Women in Hollywood celebration, hosted by Elle, attracted A-listers like Margot, Jessica, Tessa, Jen and Kristen—all wearing their best party-ready looks for fall.
My favourite trends to note: super-natural brows; "your lips, only better" colour; bangs and textured bobs; and the return of the smoky eye!
Take a look at the best hair and makeup from the night:
Margot Robbie
Margot kept it classic with strong cat eyes and a textured long bob. Notice the little details like defined lower lashes, rosy cheeks and neutral (but not pale) lipstick. Her brows are an example of the au naturel trend we've been seeing lately.
Jessica Chastain
Instead of matching her red skirt, Jessica chose a neutral-toned makeup look. I love the "your lips, only better" matte lip colour, and the mocha brown shadow (which she wears in a horizontal shape to extend her eyes). The warm peach blush adds contrast, and picks up on the amazing hue of her straight hair.
Tessa Thompson
How great does Tessa look in this vintage Victory roll and soft berry lip stain? The effect is cool—not overly retro—with a natural skin texture and on-trend burgundy shadow. She pulled this off so beautifully, I hope we see more of her!
Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer amped up her look with dramatic smoky eyes and long, straight hair. What makes the eyeshadow modern is its angular shape at the outer corners, and the fact that there's plenty of shading under the eyes. The contrast of clean skin and muted lips keep it looking fresh, not overdone. I also like face-framing layers at the front of her cut!
Kristen Stewart
I'm glad to see Kristen return to a darker hair colour and longer length! (Here's how it looked a couple months ago.) The sooty eye makeup is classic KStew, with peachy blush and soft pink lips. Her blush could be a tad more blended.
Kristen is wearing: Moisturizer • Foundation • Concealer • Blush in Jersey • Bronzer • Eyeshadow palette • Eyeliner in Noir • Mascara in Noir • False lashes • Lipstick in Panorama
Reese Witherspoon
Reese's ponytail is casually cute with a face-framing fringe. Her makeup is equally low-key, and features the peach cheeks-pink lips combo we just saw on Kristen Stewart. Her eyes have a hint of silvery shadow, and I think the false lashes work here because everything else is so understated. I would just blend the blush more.
Yara Shahidi
As usual, I'm coveting Yara's super-glowy skin. (Remember, she's only 17!) The high, braided bun is adorable, while the bright silver liner underneath her eyes is fun and age-appropriate.
Vanessa Hudgens
Vanessa played up her eyes with a baby blue shadow along her lower lash lines, paired with a sparkly taupe on the upper lids. It's unexpected and playful, especially since she kept her lips and cheeks neutral. Even though Ombré has been done to death, I do like it with her new shaggy bob. The only thing I'd change are the false lashes.
Nina Dobrev
Nina's new bangs make her look so young! (The bob, in case you haven't seen it yet, was first debuted at the Oscars after-parties.) Her makeup is all about smoky eyes and rosy cheeks, but in a quiet way. I'd add some cream highlighter to bring more life to her eyes and cheeks.
Busy Philipps
I like Busy's rose-gold hair (although I still maintain that Sienna wore it best!). The warmth looks great against her beautiful skin, and the baby pink lip adds a nice pop. Dark brows "ground" everything, along with liner smudged through the lower lash lines. She just needs some more powder to tame the shine.
Sabrina Carpenter
Sabrina's bronze and gold eyeshadow is mesmerizing. She has so much lid space to play with that these shadow-focused looks really work for her. Once again, we have un-tweezed brows, darker than her hair colour, and a muted lipstick. I like the bedhead hair, too!
Sabrina is wearing: Face mist • Eyeshadow • Lipstick
Ashley Greene
I never pictured Ashley as a blonde, but she actually pulls this off, probably because of the darker roots. (Here she is as a brunette.) The new shade looks glossy and healthy, not fried. Makeup-wise, I think the lashes are way too long, and her brow tails could be more feathery (not so drawn on).
Cindy Crawford
Cindy proves that her beauty is timeless in a soft, flippy blowout and subtly shaded eyes. If you look closely, she's got a brown shade in the crease, plus strong black liner on her upper lash line—like a cat eye minus the flicks. Her brows still look great.
Abigail Spencer
Abigail paired her suit with centre-parted waves and bold, straight brows. Her makeup is low-key, featuring peachy tones and subtly smoky eyes. I think she gets away with the false lashes because they fit her eyes well.
Jaime King
Jaime's new bangs are a fun change (this was her hair the last time we saw her). I also like the bold bronze underneath her eyes, although I'm not sure it shows off well with this hairstyle. But I desperately want to brush out and fluff her waves!
