Emmys 2017: The Best Skin, Hair and Makeup Looks on the Red Carpet
This year's Emmys brought out a bevy of A-list beauties—in the most glamorous looks we've seen since last awards season!
I'm pleased to report that false lashes seem to be on the wane, and that there seems to be a more thoughtful, restrained approach to colour. But truly, the most exciting aspect was the hair! From ponytails to fluffy waves, there's something for every taste here.
Keep scrolling to see all the best looks of the night:
Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka has a super-sultry plum eyeshadow and lipstick situation. These jewel tones are gorgeous on her, and even more so when they're applied in such a modern way (i.e. under the eyes... and even the mascara is plum!). Her strong brows replace the need for heavy lashes, and a sleek ponytail keeps it all feeling clean. Notice the extra height on top, which helps elongate her face shape.
Priyanka is wearing: Foundation in 4N1 Suntan • Concealer in 3 Light to Medium • Powder in Translucent • Powder in Medium Deep (as contour) • Eyeshadow in Plum • Eyeshadow in Burnished Bronze • Mascara in Bloodroses • Brow powder in Brunette • Lipstick in An Affair • Lip liner in Red Chocolate
Shailene Woodley
Shailene has new hair! It's now blonde, not brunette, and styled in a loose, face-framing low ponytail. The makeup here is really, really good. The forest green liner picks up on her dress, and her lips are such a pretty natural pink. I also love seeing real, healthy skin.
Shailene is wearing: Eyeshadow in 288 Road Movie
Mandy Moore
Mandy brightened up her look with an electric pink lipstick. Okay, it's not the most "on trend" shade anymore, but I appreciate the edge it brings to her classic black and white dress and simple jewellery. The rest of the makeup is about defining her lashes and brows, rather than bringing in any competing colours. Since her hemline was so wide, I think the updo kind of balances that out.
Mandy is wearing: Eye cream • Moisturizer • Lipstick in French Kiss
Jessica Biel
Jessica kept things soft and feminine in peach lipstick, blush and eyeshadow. I've been digging the barely-there makeup she's been sporting lately, and this look is no exception. Not only does it show off her glowing skin and lovely feathery brows, but it's the perfect counterpoint to a voluminous hairstyle. I'm not usually into pompadours, but this looks great on her.
Jessica is wearing: Eyeshadow in 820 Memory • Eyeshadow in Terre Brûlée • Lip stain in 158 Highway
Reese Witherspoon
I love when Reese wears her hair long and straight. I feel like it's more youthful this way than wavy, you know? The blonde is really yellow, borderline too yellow, but I actually like it on her. Also loving the darker brows, seemingly foundation-free skin and slick of warm red lipstick.
Reese is wearing: Face mist • Mascara in Stunning Black • Lipstick in Power Red
Yara Shahidi
Could Yara's skin be any more radiant?! I also love the bright gold at the inner corners of her eyes, which adds a touch of fun to the curvy cat eyes. Natural lashes and brows, sheer lip gloss and a half-up hairstyle keep it all looking very age-appropriate (she's 17).
Yara is wearing: Contour and highlighter in 160 Beige Medium • Eyeliner in 10 Noir • Eyeliner • Eyeshadow in 26 Noir Satin • Eyeshadow in 34 Poudre d'Or • Lip balm • Lip gloss in 724 Burnt Sugar
Lea Michele
Lea's neat, middle-parted straight hairstyle is always my favourite on her—and it sets the stage for some gorgeous, colourful earrings. The makeup is all about sun-kissed skin, nude lips and warm metallic eyes.
Lea is wearing: Eyeshadow in 90 Convoitise • Eyeshadow in Rouge Brûlé • Eyeshadow in 268 Candeur et Expérience
Ariel Winter
I could stare at Ariel's silvery smoky eye makeup for days. She has one of the best complexions I've ever seen in Hollywood (complete with cute nose freckles), and I like that she's grown out her brows, which softens every makeup look. But I'm not a fan of her new lip injections!
Ariel is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Tinted moisturizer in Dark • Concealer in Medium • Powder in Light/Medium • Blush in Puff • Highlighter in Quartz • Eyeliner in Blacquer 42 • Eyeshadow • Lip liner in Soar • Lip gloss in Sophia
Emmy Rossum
I love Emmy's big, brushed-out S-waves, parted deep and pinned back on one side. What better way to show off those emerald earrings! The makeup is just as beautiful, featuring brown smoky eyes, smudgy black liner and a creamy pink lipstick to make it all pop. No false lashes required!

Gabrielle Union
Gabrielle's high-volume low ponytail is amazing. With so much going on there, and in the textures of her outfit/necklace, she wisely kept her makeup tones neutral. I'm into the strong brows, too, but I'm not sure about the "doll-like" false lashes.
Sarah Hyland
Sarah is sporting a new, rich brunette hair colour. It's so much better than the blonde she's been experimenting with over the past few years! Brows and lashes are looking really good, too, and she eased up on the contour. I like that she did a rosy mocha lipstick instead of red with this dress, but I'm not crazy about the yellowy-orange shadow all the way up to the brows.
Sarah is wearing: Foundation in Natural Beige • Concealer • Bronzer • Blush in Warm Honey • Eyeshadow primer • Eyeshadow in Smoky Nights • Eyeshadow in Desert Sunset • Mascara in Black • Brow powder • Lip liner in Peach Envy • Lipstick in Marvelous Mocha
Rashida Jones
Rashida did mid-length straight hair with bangs, showing off its glossy shine. I love that this hairstyle is more unexpected than an updo with a fancy dress. The makeup is fairly bold: dramatic black winged eyes and berry-stained lips.
Rashida is wearing: Highlighter in Nude Glow • Blush in Pink • Blush in Nude • Mascara in Black • Lipstick
Elisabeth Moss
Elisabeth did her usual super-soft hair and makeup. It's actually more interesting in the close-up. You'll notice a sheer pink wash all over her lids, jet-black mascara on the top lashes only, and a creamy peachy lipstick. Hair is in a smooth blowout to tone down the formality of the strapless satin.
Elisabeth is wearing: Blush in Lucky Pink • Highlighter in 002 Pink Glow • Eyeshadow in 826 Backstage • Eyeshadow in 001 Lune • Lip stain in 162 Miss Satin
Sofia Vergara
Sofia looks so cute in this high ponytail and bangs. (I'm so sad she already wants to grow them out!) She can't quit the berry lips, but at least it looks fresher here, with the youthful hairstyle.
Tracee Ellis Ross
Tracee's matte, pale pink lipstick and matching blush are so good with her skin tone. The black liner is also matte, and very graphic—although not a cat eye, which might've been too retro with the lips. She has such great brows.
Tracee is wearing: Eyeliner in 61 Noir • Eyeliner • Brow powder in 50 Brun • Brow pencil in 40 Brun Cendré
Julianne Hough
Julianne did a girly medium pink lipstick and tied her low ponytail with a long, ballerina-esque black ribbon. I love this idea for the red carpet! I just think her brows would be better with an ashy, cool-toned brown pencil.
Padma Lakshmi
I love that Padma experimented with a bold cat eye in metallic pink and purple eyeshadow—it's cool because it doesn't match the dress. I also like her layered mid-length haircut and the way it sweeps over one eye.
Gillian Anderson
Gillian did an unexpectedly pretty braided updo with loose, face-framing pieces. It's even more amazing from the side! I just wish the colour was less brassy. Makeup-wise, I like the feathery brows and tinted pink lip balm—all she needs are the long, dark top lashes to complete the look.
Gillian is wearing: Tinted lip balm in Cherry Blossom
Heidi Klum
I'm not sure about these earrings (!), but Heidi's loose, half-up hair with subtle Ombré ends feels very relaxed and Bohemian. The same goes for the makeup, which features neutral smoky eyes and an opaque nude lipstick on top of flawless smooth skin. However, the bottom false lashes and white eyeliner need to go!
Jane Fonda
Jane's long, lash-skimming bangs and matching long ponytail are iconic! The latter is surely fake, but what an amazing style statement. To go with it, she did matte hot pink lips in the same hue as her dress. I just think the black liner is too harsh/heavy.
