Emmys 2020: The 14 Best Skin, Hair and Makeup Moments (As Seen on Instagram)
This year's Emmy Awards were a virtual affair, so unlike past years, there was no red carpet and no live audience. But celebs still brought their beauty A-game to join the ceremony live from their living rooms—and took to Instagram to share their best selfies.

Yara Shahidi
If Yara isn't #skingoals, I don't know who is! After showing us some behind-the-scenes moustache-bleaching realness, she stepped out with this glowing skin look, and I'm obsessed. See how that light is bouncing off her forehead? Gorgeous! (Although keep in mind... she's only 20 years old!) The makeup itself is actually quite minimal, with only black liquid liner and nude lip gloss as the key focal points. The multiple braids give this the perfect cool-girl finish.
Yara is wearing: Face mask • Moisturizer • Foundation in T105 and T135 • Concealer in Caramel and Truffle • Eyeshadow in Perlina • Mascara in Very Black • Brow powder in Granite • Lip gloss in Sugar Drizzle and Cider Donut
Zendaya
Zendaya served up not one but TWO looks, and they're complete opposites. Here, she exudes so much poise and grace, it's amazing! Beauty-wise, the sleek, side-parted updo was the only choice for this structured couture dress (see it in motion here). The same goes for the winged eyes and sheer peach lips—anything matchy-matchy would've been a bad move.
For her second look, Zendaya switched things up by channeling Brigitte Bardot in an over-the-top voluminous updo and '60s-inspired makeup. She exaggerated the eyeliner all the way around her eyes, slicked on a pale nude gloss, and possibly deepened her contour. Such a style icon!
Zendaya is wearing: Face mask • Eye mask • Serum • Eye cream • Foundation in Bisque • Highlighter in Shimmering Buff (as highlighter and eyeshadow) • Highlighter in Dazzling Bronze (as eyeshadow) • Eyeshadow in Smokey Chic • Eyeliner in Black Vinyl • Brow pencil in Light Brown and Chocolate • Brow gel in Transparent • Lip gloss in Simmer
Reese Witherspoon
Reese kept it simple and classic with soft waves and a swipe of bold red lipstick. The latter has a hint of orange, which I love on a blonde, and looks fresh with a little shading on the eyes—but no harsh eyeliner. Her hair has grown a lot since the last time we saw her, at the SAG Awards. I really like the gentle bend in it, and the deep side part.
Reese is wearing: Hydrating serum • Antioxidant serum • Moisturizer • Eye cream • Hydrating serum (as primer) • Foundation in Light Medium 8 • Concealer in L4 • Powder in Light (under eyes) • Eyeshadow in Bronze Nebula and Major Mahogany • Mascara • Lip liner in Major • Lipstick in Elson 2
Kerry Washington
It's no wonder Kerry has been a Neutrogena ambassador for seven years and counting. Her skin is UNREAL. (And I'm not just talking about her face—her entire body glows!) I'm also obsessed with this hot pink shade on her lips and cheeks, which she should definitely wear more often. And can we talk about this sleek, shiny bob? I'm not sure if it's her own hair or a wig, but she wears it so well!
Kerry is wearing: Serum/primer • Lip crayon in Cherry Pink
Jameela Jamil
If you've been following Jameela on the red carpet for a while, then you know she loves a cat eye with a bold lip and her signature bangs. You might also be aware that she does her own makeup—and for this event, she documented her exact process with a little tutorial! I love the shades she chose (a coral lipstick and a warm shimmery shadow), and how quick and easy it was to do. Her skin is also so flawless, she doesn't need foundation!
Jameela is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Foundation (as concealer) • Blush in Rose Flush • Eyeshadow in Fighter • Eyeshadow in Spark • Liquid liner in Ink Black • Mascara • Lip crayon in Dolce Vita
Rachel Brosnahan
Rachel was blonde the last time we saw her, at the Golden Globes, but now she's returned to the deep brunette that we haven't seen since the 2019 SAG Awards. This was always my favourite with her pale skin and blue eyes! Here, she's rocking a collarbone-length cut with textured waves, and a dramatic swipe of navy liner.
Rachel is wearing: Primer • Foundation • Concealer in Alabaster • Bronzer in Terra • Eyeshadow in Mink Mirage • Eyeliner in Midnight and White Smoke • Mascara • Brow gel in Taupe • Lip liner in Slash • Lipstick in Spanish Pink
H.E.R.
While H.E.R.'s gorgeous skin and makeup stood out at the Grammys, it's her hair that steals the show this time around. Pulled back into a high braid, it's adorned with individual crystals that are just MADE for the KiraKira app. The makeup look was all about bold lashes (maybe too bold!) and soft fuchsia on her lips, lids and cheeks.
H.E.R. is wearing: Foundation in Medium 21 and Medium Deep 23 • Concealer in M18 • Blush in 999 • Liquid highlighter in Platinum Rose • Powder highlighter in Golden Glow • Eyeshadow in Fuchsia Flame and Hedonistic Rose • Brow pen in Brown • Brow gel in Brown • Lip liner in Cosmic Vibes and 1980 • Lipstick in Like
Regina King
I'm so glad Regina didn't shy away from making a major fashion statement. I'm in awe of how regal and cool she looks in this dramatic blue dress (complete with oversized side pouf) and matching blue eyeliner. The '80s updo with loose, wispy curls makes it even better.
Regina is wearing: Essence • Face oil • Face mist • Primer • Foundation in Medium 20 and Medium Deep 24 • Concealer in M20 and MD22 • Powder in Medium 3 • Powder in Deep (under eyes) • Highlighter • Eyeshadow in Bronze Nebula, Lunar Champagne and Major Mahogany • Eyeshadow in Dream It • Eyeliner in Blitz Blue • Mascara • False lashes • Lip liner in Suburbia • Tinted lip balm in Nude Venus • Lip gloss in Aphrodisiac
Julia Garner
According to her makeup artist, Julia's look was inspired by "1920s ethereal beauty." I'm into the strong brows and the barely-there rosy hue on her lips and eyelids. But her hair? The short curls and yellow blonde are both a no for me. (Compare and contrast with her updo at the 2019 Emmys and longer bob at the 2019 SAG Awards.) I know she was going for a flapper look here, but I don't think it needed to be so literal.
Julia is wearing: Moisturizer • Eye cream • Powder in No. 10 • Highlighter in Transparent • Eyeshadow in Warm Memories • Mascara in Noir • Brow pencil in Light Brown • Lipstick in Serenity
Octavia Spencer
Octavia has me in the mood for fall with her Bohemian floral dress, shoulder-length waves and rich, cool-toned makeup. She pulled the berry and purple tones from the floral pattern, and they do suit her skin tone. My only issue is that the blush seems too intense and is placed too low on her cheeks. Also, I feel like her eyes would be set off nicely by some longer, fluttery lashes!
Shira Haas
Newcomer Shira already has her red carpet game down pat (even if there's no actual red carpet here!). The slicked-back updo with understated makeup, a strapless gown and diamond jewellery give her a distinct princess vibe. But instead of sticking with a predictable pale pink, her lipstick, blush and eyeshadow have more of a tawny tone. Very pretty!
Shira is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Foundation in Medium Light and Medium Plus • Concealer in 10 and 20 • Powder in Medium • Blush in No. 23 • Eyeshadow in Clair-Obscur • Mascara in Noir • Brow pencil in Brun Clair • Lip liner in Nude Brun • Lipstick in Easy and Boy
Tracee Ellis Ross
Tracee's style is always a bit quirky, and this event was no exception. Rather than pairing her gold dress with the typical warm-toned makeup, she did something totally unexpected—a cool, orchid-coloured lipstick. Because her hair is in a sleek updo and the rest of her face is very clean, it totally works.
Yvonne Orji
Yvonne rocked her natural hair in a short pixie, but with a twist—there's a Black Power fist shaved into one side. ("'Nuff said," is how she captioned her Instagram post.) To go with it, she chose a liquid lip in the same deep scarlet as her dress. I'm just not crazy about the heavy foundation and false lashes.
Yvonne is wearing: Lipstick in Mamacita
