Q: Dear Bill, you're so generous for offering your expertise to your readers! Thank you so much!

About me: I'm 45 years old, 5'6", with brown/hazelish eyes and medium olive skin. I started greying in my early twenties, but my natural hair colour is medium brown with reddish undertones. I have thick, wavy and somewhat frizzy hair—and lots of it. Because it's coloured, it tends to be dry.

Margaret has a cowlick on both sides of her forehead.

After I had baby number two last year, I decided to get rid of my long, layered locks and get a bob, which I grew tired of quickly. It's grown out a bit, but I'm not sure where I'm going with it anymore.

Margaret got a bob after baby number two.

Please, Bill, let me know what you think I should do with my colour and my cut. I'm particularly self-conscious about my large forehead and my crooked nose. I don't have a natural part; I have cowlicks on both sides of my forehead.

I'm going to be 46 years old in April and would love a fresh, updated look that you think is right for me. I look forward to reading your advice! Thank you so much in advance. — Margaret

Margaret wants a fresh, updated look.

A: Margaret, thank you for your kind words and your consultation request.

This is the cut I recommend, with a centre part if your hair will allow it with your cowlicks:

Meg Ryan at the 2001 premiere of 'Kate & Leopold'.

These layers will open up your face; they are also modern and versatile. I really like the long skinny ends. They will disperse the thickness with the extra length, and show off the layers.

Then with your natural wave enhanced with a curling wand, this cut is perfect:

Jessica Biel at the 2007 premiere of 'I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry'.

This is also the colour I would suggest for you. Highlighting the cowlick in some cases can be beautiful.

Here are a few examples of well-handled cowlicks:

Candice Swanepoel at the 2009 What is Sexy? party.

Candice Swanepoel's centre part and loose braid.

Blake Lively in 2012.

Lindsay Lohan at the 2009 ESPN Super Bowl party.

I hope this helps. I am totally confident that you can make peace with your cowlicks.
