It needs to be healthy first.

Q: My hair is very curly, yet it settles into very wavy within a couple of days after I wash it. (My mother is Korean with wavy hair, if this helps!)

Diana is dealing with split ends, but wants to grow her hair long.

My hair is naturally dark brown. The main challenges I have with it now are split ends, since I am trying to grow it very long. Thank you very much for your time! — Diana

A: Diana, thank you for your question.

In your photos, the colour of your hair is not a dark brown, so there must be some colouring going on. When you are trying to grow any hair, you need to be conservative with colour. Going to lighter shades from a dark shade should only happen if your hair can handle it.

Here is the colour I see as best suited to you, and also a side part on an angle—darker and sleeker.

The Skincare Edit Recommends

I would like for you to work toward growing your fringe out and wearing an off-centre part.

If you would like to keep your hair on the lighter side, I feel this is a better tone for you:

Here is a shorter cut that helps get rid of the old hair and work on the new, also with an off-centre part:

Scissors are really the only answer to split ends.

I recommend trimming the hair where it gets skinny as you pull your fingers from your scalp through to the ends. It will be obvious to you where that is. Judge how much you feel is comfortable to take off... and cut that and no more.

Over the next year, maybe two, you will have what you want: longer locks.
