As much as I love beauty, I'm a total fashion freak at heart. Clothes just speak to me! So when those two worlds collide, I get very, very giddy. And as luck may have it, they recently collided in the most awesome way possible.
In case you haven't heard, I'm talking about one of my favourite fast fashion retailers, H&M, and their fresh new beauty range.
H&M's new beauty department has JUST debuted in select stores and has a bevy of products, including nail polish; hairstyling products (styling tools, sprays, balms and creams); body care (fragrance, scrubs and lotions) and makeup. A ridiculous amount of makeup, in every colour under the sun. This is so exciting!
You can only imagine how over the moon I was when H&M sent me a lovely package of five items to test out:
Here's what I tried:
- H&M Finishing Powder in Warm Beige
- H&M Powder Blush in Apricot
- H&M Nail Colour in December Dawn
- H&M Eyeshadow Palette in Smoky Nudes
- H&M Cream Lipstick in Candy Apple
First things first, let's talk about the packaging. I can't help but love the chic black and white theme H&M has going on. You can't see it in these photos, but the black compacts all have white bottoms (except the blush, which is gold).
All the items I received came in an outer box, so you won't have to worry about fingerprints from people touching the packaging before you even take it home.
Here's the lowdown on each:
H&M Finishing Powder
If there's one thing I could change about my skin, it would be my super-oily nose area. As a result, I've turned to blotting sheets and finishing powder to try to remedy the situation and keep oil at bay. Unfortunately, I haven't been too successful... until now.
Here's the deal: I usually apply powder after all my makeup is on, and by the end of the work day, my nose is just as oily as it was pre-makeup. But after applying the H&M Finishing Powder, my skin is barely oily eight hours later, which I can't help but be impressed with.
By no means is it as matte or as controlled as right after application, but in all honesty, I think this works better than my Marc Jacobs Perfection Powder. And at under $10, it's kind of a steal!
Here's the powder close-up:
It's not as light or as "featherweight" as my Marc Jacobs powder (MJ wins on that front, hands down), but it doesn't go on heavy or cakey, either. It's somewhere in the middle, and that's not a bad thing.
I'd swatch it for you, but really, it just goes on translucent. Like most finishing powders, it didn't take much effort to apply, and with a few sweeps, shine was gone! So far, so good, H&M.

H&M Powder Blush
Yay, blush! It has got to be one of my favourite makeup categories, so naturally I couldn't wait to get H&M Powder Blush in Apricot on my cheeks.
This apricot colour looks gorge in the packaging, and even when swatched on my finger. The light peachy-pink is so pretty!
But when this shade is blended out on the skin, it really fades to nothing. So much so that there's not even any point in showing you, because you'd think you were just looking at my skin!

I wanted to love this blush, but it just didn't deliver. Here's to hoping it's just this shade.

H&M Nail Polish
I paired December Dawn with Essie's Wrap Me Up, a neutral nude from the Cashmere Matte collection I reviewed here. I love it over a nude colour, because it gives it that little something special, and depending on the light, a gorgeous iridescent tint.
I can't say much in terms of staying power with this shade, because I used it as a top coat. The same goes for application; it applied well but I really only used one coat of it. I definitely like it, but to see how H&M's Nail Polish line really stacks up quality-wise, I'd need to try a cream colour.
I do really like the brush, though! It's dense and wide, which makes for easy application. And the cap isn't too long, which makes it easier to control each stroke.
Final verdict: I can't wait to get my hands on more shades, especially at the very wallet-friendly price!

H&M Eyeshadow Palette
We all know I don't really do eyeshadow, but when I popped open the Smoky Nudes Palette, I immediately liked it. I mean, if I actually wore shadow, these would SO be my colours. I like that there's a little bit of everything in this palette. From shimmery shades to matte basics, you get it all!
Here are all nine shadows swatched for ya:
They don't have names, so we'll just go with columns here. The darker shades, mainly in columns two and three, have nice pigmentation and the lighter ones are just that—light.
As a non-shadow user, I won't be reaching for these every day, but they do seem easy enough to use and blend. I might even bust them out for my next shadow-wearing occasion, although I'll have to majorly improve my application skills!

H&M Cream Lipstick
Last but not least, let's talk about lipstick. First of all, the packaging of H&M's new Cream Lipstick is to die for. The beige and gold tube is just so chic! It has a nice weight to it and doesn't feel cheap at all.
I swiped Candy Apple on my lips and instantly loved it. Its creamy formula immediately moisturized my lips, and the colour was amazing. I would normally never wear red to work, but I didn't mind wearing this one because it was just right... not too bright nor too bold.
I found this lasted just as long as any other lipstick I have (or have paid more for!), but best of all, after eating and drinking, it left behind a nice stain. Love!

I think you already know how I'm going to conclude this review, but I'll spell it out for you anyway. Run, don't walk, to your nearest H&M and grab some of their new beauty stuff!
The five products I tried have me itching to discover the entire collection. The prices are pretty unbeatable, the quality is great and I can just imagine getting (happily) lost in all the makeup, hair products and fragrance. This one is a total winner in my books.
