Out of all the celebrity Before & Afters we’ve documented, Kylie Jenner’s has to be one of the most dramatic. Unless you’ve managed to avoid all things Kardashian over the past decade, then you already know which feature changed the most: her lips.
In 2015, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star (who was 17 at the time) famously admitted to getting lip injections. In a clip from the show, she reveals: “I have had temporary lip fillers. It’s just something that I wanted to do.”
Before that, she was widely criticized for suggesting that her fuller look was only makeup. “You guys have watched me grow up since I was nine,” she said at the time. “My face is going to get different. Now, I know how to do my makeup, contour and everything. I’m not against surgery. I’d never say no, but I don’t desire it right now.”
Fillers aren’t surgery, so technically, she wasn’t lying. But as Kylie kits her mid-20s—and her look continues to change—it’s becoming apparent that she has done her lips and probably much more.
Let’s examine her transformation throughout the years... and see how many facial features she may have tweaked.
From 2008-2009: The Pre-Teen Years
At the 2008 Time For Heroes Celebrity Carnival
Our first shot is from 2008, when she was just 10 years old. Such a cute kid—look at those freckles! Notice her natural brown hair colour, which she would soon dye darker, and her natural skin tone, which she later spray-tanned.
From 2010-2013: Becoming a Teenage Icon
At the 2010 Los Angeles Premiere of ‘Easy A’
By the time she turned 13, Kylie was experimenting with age-appropriate makeup. If only my attempts as a teen had looked this good! I love the eyeliner along her lower waterlines, the bold blush and the clear, glossy lips (sans filler). She always had good lashes—no extensions needed!

Isn’t she the spitting image of her dad here? It’s all in the smile—so that’s where I think she got her naturally thinner lips. But it was around this time that they were becoming an insecurity. “I had really small lips, and I didn’t ever think about it until I had one of my first kisses,” she explained on the KUWTK Reunion. “And a guy said to me, ‘Oh my God, you’re such a good kisser, but you have such small lips,’ or something like that. From then on, I felt unkissable.”

As KUWTK soared in popularity, Kylie began adopting the same fashion and beauty aesthetic as her older sisters. She started wearing her hair silky-straight and parted down the middle, with a spray tan and nude-toned makeup. So far, I think her face is still au naturel... for now.

It wasn’t long before she got into makeup in a big way, rocking a signature look that was entirely her own. To this day, she still likes to do this very heavy, matte base, with a lighter shade across the mid-face. Of course, the spray tan is even deeper, and we can also see the beginning of her “Instagram brows.” The only thing that’s a bit off-brand is the lip colour. Who could forget the vampy lip trend of the early ’10s?

By the end of the year, Kylie apparently discovered lip liner. To me, it looks like she drew outside her lips, especially the bottom one, to create the illusion of fullness. And hey—she was pretty good at it! She’s also sporting longer lashes, and in case you missed it, reddish balayage highlights through the ends of her hair.
From 2014-2016: The Lip Filler Scandal
At the 2014 Imagine Ball
Just a few months later, at age 16, she stepped out with a completely different look. The first thing you notice is the hair. It’s dyed black (just like Kim and Kourtney), and freshly chopped to her collarbone. Often celebs make a big change like this to distract you from cosmetic work—like those newly inflated lips. They’re not overdone, though, so I think if she’d kept things at this level, there wouldn’t have been a backlash.

Alas, Kylie didn’t stop there—her lips just kept on growing. Here, she’s wearing a similar dark lipstick shade to what we saw in 2013, but the increase in size couldn’t be more obvious. Keep in mind that she was still trying to pass this off as lip liner alone, even getting her makeup artist, Rob Scheppy, in on the act. “I find it funny that so much attention is drawn to my work, but I like it,” he told Daily Mail. “Kylie’s lips are created using expertly applied lip liner and a little lip balm.” Riiiiight.

After finally fessing up to fillers, she no longer had to disguise her lips under dark lipstick and lip liner. Instead, she could rock lighter looks like this one, as a counterpoint to the Cleopatra-inspired hair and eye makeup. I don’t hate it, but you have to admit that the overall effect does resemble a wax figure.
At the 2016 PrettyLittleThing Launch Party
Kylie kept a low profile in 2016, and I have a suspicion why. Underneath the mask of makeup, it looks like her nose may have been altered, with a refined tip and a narrower bridge. (She used to contour there, but now it isn’t necessary.) I also see higher eyebrows, which were perhaps raised with Botox or even a brow lift. Plus, there’s the filler, which may now be in her chin and cheeks as well as her lips.
From 2017-2018: A More “Natural” Look
At the 2017 NBC Universal Golden Globes After-Party
With pretty pink lipstick and her hair piled high in a ballerina bun, she didn’t look so extreme for this appearance in 2017. Maybe it also had to do with her new injector. “I still do Juvéderm for my lips. I go to Dr. Ourian in Beverly Hills. He’s the best, and he’s super natural about it. I was going to somebody before, and it was just looking crazy.”
At the 2018 VMAs
It was in 2018, after she gave birth to her daughter, Stormi, that her fans noticed something different. “She looks like the old Kylie here, IDK why,” one commented on an Instagram post. To everyone’s surprise, Kylie herself replied: “I got rid of all my filler.” Well, maybe not all of it, as you can see in this photo. Also notice the bleached-blonde hair, and how her eyes seem perhaps more open than before.
From 2019-2022: Radically Transformed
At the 2019 Grammys
I don’t know about you, but I find this photo to be the most shocking of all. She was 21 here, but somehow looks much older. Not only are the lip fillers back, but they appear to be distorting her upper lip so that it curls up on one side. Her cheeks seem super sculpted, and if you look closely at her eyelids, you can see that the creases sit higher up than they used to when she was a tween.
At the 2020 Vanity Fair Oscar Party
For her sole red carpet appearance in 2020, she almost looks computer-generated. It’s as if every single feature—lips, cheeks, brows, eyelids, chin—was “perfected” according to what is seen as the “ideal.” And yet, all together it looks a bit artificial (and I dare say, kind of ages her). I suspect that she’s also wearing coloured contacts to lighten her eyes, which adds to the vibe.
On Instagram in 2021
With red carpet events on hiatus in 2021, she posted selfies like this one to keep us up to date on her ever-changing beauty looks. (So keep in mind that this was probably Photoshopped, since we know that Kim employs a retoucher for $100,000 a year!) Speaking of Kim, that’s who I see when I look at these lips, eyes and cheeks. As it turns out, Kim goes to Dr. Ourian, too!
At the 2022 Billboard Music Awards
That brings us to her most recent red carpet appearance, only a few months after giving birth to her second child. On the one hand, I love seeing a more natural Kylie—her skin looks like skin (not covered with a heavy layer of foundation and contour), and her features look soft instead of exaggerated. But on the other hand, there’s nothing natural about her lips... and I think her cheeks seem a lot plumper, too!
Kylie Jenner Before and After
Kylie in 2008 vs 2019
Kylie may be a beauty mogul now, thanks to the launch of Kylie Cosmetics in 2015 and Kylie Skin in 2019. But there’s no way that makeup alone could be responsible for such a drastic change in her appearance.
Obviously, she’s owned up to the lip fillers, and no doubt helped them to become mainstream. Things have changed so much that artificially plumped-up lips are the now the norm for Hollywood celebs—not the exception.
“There’s no way to go from those very thin lips to these without at least filler or fat transfer, okay,” says Dr. Daniel Barrett. “Not only did she have the lips done, but I also think she might have had a little bit of work done to her nose and to her face. A little bit of sculpting with either Botox or a jawline filler, perhaps a bit of Botox on the brow.”
“Her nose looks thinner and more refined, possibly from a subtle rhinoplasty,” adds Dr. Anthony Youn. “Her eyebrows are more arched and elevated, a possible consequence of Botox injections into her forehead and around her eyes.”
But Dr. Charles S. Lee believes that she went much further. “I think she had her chin shaved, her buccal fat removed, her temples lifted [via brow lift], in addition to narrowing her nose [with rhinoplasty], and injections to her upper lip.”
Whatever she’s done, Kylie isn’t talking. “People think I fully went under the knife and completely reconstructed my face, which is completely false,” she said in 2019. “I’m terrified! I would never. They don’t understand what good hair and makeup and, like, fillers, can really do.” Do you believe her?!
