VMAs 2017: The Best Skin, Hair and Makeup Looks on the Red Carpet
MTV's annual Video Music Awards (a.k.a. the VMAs) brings one of the best red carpets for beauty risk-taking!
This year's celeb attendees proved that matchy-matchy makeup is here to stay, pulling bold eyeshadow hues straight from their outfits. They also experimented with cool cat eyes, vampy lips, and... wait for it... the unibrow!
Here are the must-see beauty close-ups from the night:
Paris Jackson
How cool are Paris' reverse smokies?! Above the eyes, it's all bare (except for mascara), but underneath, the black waterlines seamlessly blend into a bold, emerald-green shadow. The rest of the makeup has an understated rosy glow—much better than the brown tones she wore at Teen Choice. I'm also glad to see her back with light hair, even if she did steal Miley Cyrus' two-toned look. The brown was fine, but blonde is "wow!" I might just tidy up in between the brows... or not. I think the rumoured unibrow trend could actually be happening (more evidence in a sec)!
Paris is wearing: Powder in 40 • Bronzer in Medium Deep • Eyeshadow in Road Movie • Mascara in Noir • Brow pencil in Brun Naturel • Lipstick in Golden Sand
Olivia Munn
Olivia's vampy lips are putting me in the mood for fall! I love that this colour is less pinky and less predictable than the typical berries. It goes perfectly with subtly rose-flushed cheeks, long lashes and nude eyes. (There are actually FOUR different shades on there... imagine how many Patrick Ta uses for a shadow-focused look!) I also love the centre-parted, mid-length waves with fine highlights.
Olivia is wearing: Contour in Bronzing • Blush in Rouge Profond • Blush in Vibration • Eyeshadow in Sable (as eyeshadow and highlighter) • Eyeshadow in Memory • Eyeshadow in Road Movie • Eyeshadow in Bronze Antique • Eyeshadow in Beat • Mascara in Noir • Individual lashes • Brow pencil • Lipstick in Ultraberry • Lip liner in Seduction
Vanessa Hudgens
Vanessa's red eyeliner is certainly unexpected. It's not only a daring colour choice, but also application—all the way around the eyes and then out in dramatic flicks. Oh, and there are also real, red Swarovski crystals along her upper lash lines! Lips are neutral (but not pale), lashes are fluffy, and the just-out-of-shower hair is the perfect casual counterpoint.
Vanessa is wearing: Moisturizer • Primer • Foundation in 18 Pecan • Concealer • Powder • Illuminating powder in Golden Hour • Blush in Flush • Blush in The Confession • Highlighter • Eyeliner in Rouge Louboutin • Mascara • Lip liner in Iconic Nude • Lipstick in Fury Matte • Lipstick in Vibrant Metal
Hailee Steinfeld
I love Hailee's peachy lips and cheeks. (You know me, can't resist an orange!) On most people, these runway-inspired cat eyes might be too much, but she pulls them off beautifully. I don't know if this is her real hair or extensions, but the extra-long length adds another layer of drama.
Hailee is wearing: Foundation in Cashew and Linen • Concealer (under eyes) • Concealer (rest of face) • Bronzer • Blush in Lush Nectarine • Eyeshadow in Caramel • Eyeshadow in Tuxedo • False lashes • Mascara in Black Onyx • Brow powder in Ash • Brow mascara in Brunette • Lip liner in Natural Lips • Lipstick in Milky Way
Demi Lovato
Demi's skin is SO gorgeous. Seriously, she has one of the most perfect complexions I've ever seen on the red carpet. I like that we can see a few freckles, and this lip gloss is pretty on her. Although the volume is impressive, I find the waves in her hair dated. I'd also prefer more natural brows.
Demi is wearing: Serum • Eye cream • Moisturizer • Primer • Foundation in 003 • Foundation in Syracuse (outer edges of face) • Concealer • Contour • Bronzer • Highlighter in Opal • Blush • Powder • Eyeliner in Blacquer 42 • Eyeshadow • False lashes • Brow pencil in Universal Brown • Lip mask • Lipstick in Honeybun • Lip gloss in Park Ave Princess
Alessandra Ambrosio
Alessandra's messy high ponytail gives her a casual vibe. Since she's wearing an extremely busy, structured dress with a high collar, the hair makes it playful—not so serious. The makeup is also very fresh, with matte rose lips, subtle contouring and flirty cat eyes.
Katy Perry
So Katy was always into heavy makeup, but it's become even heavier since she cut all her hair off. There is so much happening here, I don't even know where to begin! It's very '80s, but not in a good way. Needless to say, I want to chase after her with a makeup wipe.
Katy is wearing: Foundation in Creamy Natural • Eyeshadow in Jewels • Eyeshadow in Goldens • Eyeliner in Black Onyx • Mascara in Very Black • Brow powder in Rich Brown • Lip liner in Clear • Lipstick in Gelebrity
