From Bite Beauty to Phyto: 10 of the Best New Beauty Products

Lip crayons, a hair mask, and so much more.

It's time for another update on all things new in the world of beauty!

As usual, this is my "edit" of the most interesting, innovative, beautiful and/or effective new releases that crossed my desk recently, and are landing in stores as we speak.

This month, there were so many launches to cover that I've split them up into two parts:

  • Today, in part one, I'm sharing my makeup and hair picks.
  • In part two, we'll talk exclusively about new skincare.

Also NEW: I've added additional photos and swatches to the galleries, to keep things tidy. So have a peek if you're keen to see more detail on each product.

Here are the beauty launches you need to know about:

Bite Beauty The Lip Pencil

Bite Beauty The Lip Pencils.

Bite Beauty The Lip Pencils.

Lip liners are still going strong, so it's no surprise to see Bite Beauty introducing The Lip Pencil. These took three years to develop, and are made right here in Canada in Bite Beauty's Toronto lab!

The focus is neutrals—22 of them, in fact. All of the shades are inspired by natural lip tones, so you won't find any brights here. This makes them IDEAL for overdrawing your lip line, because it's way more believable if you use an exact match to your lip colour. There are probably multiple shades that will be a close match—for me, 010 Rosey Mauve, 016 Dusty Rose, 022 Rosey Brown, 032 Mauve Brown and 036 Rose Taupe all work.

The texture manages to be smooth and glideable, but with enough "grip" to stay locked in place once applied. The coverage is lovely—just about opaque, and with a stain-like, natural matte finish. So I'd wear these all over the lips as lip colour as well! For this purpose, I especially love their lighter shades, like 008 Peachy Nude. It covers up my darker lips, but doesn't have that unflattering chalky look like so many pale lipsticks.

The one thing to be aware of is that the tips are prone to breaking off when you're first using these. I don't know if that's because they dried out in transit or what. Once I sharpened them, I didn't have that problem again. Note: They do not come with a sharpener, so you'll have to use your own.

Phyto Phytoelixir Intense Nutrition Mask

Phyto Phytoelixir Intense Nutrition Mask.

Phyto Phytoelixir Intense Nutrition Mask.

Finding hair masks that aren't loaded with silicones is almost as hard as finding silicone-free face moisturizers. So I was very excited when I looked at the ingredients of the Phyto Phytoelixir Intense Nutrition Mask—and even more so when felt the results on my hair! (BTW, The Coveteur has a great article on the problems with silicone hair products. It's a good read!)

So in this mask, Phyto uses macadamia oil and a flower wax to penetrate, hydrate and soften the hair. The texture is insane—like a rich, whipped butter.

Any hair type can use it. Fine hair only needs to leave a small dab in for two to three minutes, while thick hair can use more, and leave it on 10 minutes or longer. When I rinse it out, my hair feels like silk! Zero tangles, amazing smoothness and that "just from the salon" feeling.

I know Kérastase is the more popular salon brand, but once you try this stuff, you'll be a Phyto convert!

Chanel Rouge Coco Gloss

Chanel Rouge Coco Glosses.

Chanel Rouge Coco Glosses.

Mark my words, lip gloss is making a comeback. Chanel is discontinuing its Glossimers, which have been around for ages, and replacing them with the even BETTER Rouge Coco Gloss line.

As far as luxury lip gloss goes, these are the ultimate. There's the chic packaging, of course, but the formula is also perfect: highly moisturizing, non-sticky and beautifully shiny. The applicator is also improved; it's now rounded and super-cushiony, making it even easier to coat your lips in a couple of swipes.

There are 24 shades (four limited-edition); some are shimmery and some are flat. I tried three: 724 Burnt Sugar, 744 Subtil and 716 Caramel. The latter is a non-shimmery one and I'm completely obsessed. It's a "your lips, only better" in gloss form!

There are also three top coats in the line that you can layer on top of other glosses or lip colours, or wear on their own. I didn't get to try the two limited-edition ones: 778 Caviar, which darkens, and 776 Impulsion, which adds orangey-red warmth. But as you can see, I do have the permanent one, 774 Excitation, which has flecks of shimmery gold. So fun!

Burt's Bees Gloss Lip Crayon

Burt's Bees Gloss Lip Crayons.

Burt's Bees Gloss Lip Crayons.

Told you gloss was coming back. If you loved the Lip Crayons that Burt's Bees launched in 2015, but wished they were a little more sheer, a little more shiny—then the Burt's Bees Gloss Lip Crayon is for you!

This is the same chubby pencil format, but with a moisturizing, glossy finish that is more forgiving to dry lips and applications on the go.

Mind you, there's still quite a bit of pigment. As you can see in the swatches, these aren't the type of glosses that all look the same on your lips. You do get significant colour payoff. There are six shades, ranging from nude to cool pink and warm peach, and an array of reds. Tahitian Sunset is my number one pick here. It's such a unique, creamy soft red!

Know Cosmetics No, My Lips Are Sealed Lipstick Topcoat

Know Cosmetics No, My Lips Are Sealed Lipstick Topcoat.

Know Cosmetics No, My Lips Are Sealed Lipstick Topcoat.

Know Cosmetics is expanding its solution-based makeup range with No, My Lips Are Sealed Lipstick Topcoat. This product does exactly that—seals in your lipstick so it won't transfer onto your coffee mug, or to other people's lips/cheeks!

But that's not all it does. It also prevents your lip colour from smudging or fading, without changing the colour at all. And it keeps your lips hydrated, so you won't get those awful flaky bits that ruin the look of lipstick.

The texture is a clear, non-sticky gel, which you're meant to apply on top of your lipstick. Then, you need to wait a couple minutes until it dries down. It may slightly change the texture of your lip colour (making it more shiny), but you can blot it down to look more matte—just give it enough time to "set" first. Also be careful not to rub it, as that will disturb its sealing power.

I tried this over a rich red, and was so pleasantly surprised that it didn't leave mouth prints all over my cups. It also kept my colour true, right until I was ready to wash it off. If you like bold shades, this is a great little tool!

Clarins Stylo 4 Couleurs

Clarins Stylo 4 Couleurs.

Clarins Stylo 4 Couleurs.

Remember those retractable pens with multiple ink colours? (This is what I'm talking about.) Well, Clarins has cleverly adapted that idea for makeup with the limited-edition Stylo 4 Couleurs.

You get four shades in the one pen, each just a click away. The blue, brown and black are all eyeliners, while the warm beige is a lip liner (although truth be told, I think it looks pretty amazing around the eyes as well!). You can also use the brown as an eyebrow pencil and freckle pencil. Although not waterproof, I found these to be long-lasting.

Every once in a while, Clarins comes up with something innovative like this. The pen format is so convenient if you're trying to cut down clutter in your purse, or when travelling.

Givenchy Lip Liner

Givenchy Lip Liner and Sharpener.

Givenchy Lip Liner.

More lip liner news—Givenchy, too, has come out with a full range of Lip Liners. There are a few key differences between these and Bite's.

First of all, they're completely waterproof, with a smooth, nourishing texture that only luxury brands truly excel at.

There are 10 shades, designed to match the vivid Rouge Interdit lipsticks. I didn't get the chance to try any colours, but they are said to have a high concentration of pigment for maximum colour intensity.

Then there's the Universel Transparent shade, which I'm showing here. I love that this keeps your lipstick locked in place without being detectable, since I loathe visible, unblended lip liner. You can also use it as a base all over your lips, to give your lip colours extra hold. It has a waxier texture, and I do love me some Givenchy wax—their Mister Eyebrow brow wax is amazing also!

Oh, and these come with a sharpener, which (somewhat) helps to justify the higher price point.

Physicians Formula #InstaReady Multi-Finish Eyeshadow

Physicians Formula #InstaReady Multi-Finish Eyeshadows.

Physicians Formula #InstaReady Multi-Finish Eyeshadows.

Okay, the name is kind of terrible. Physicians Formula didn't need to pander to the Instagram crowd by calling these #InstaReady Multi-Finish Eyeshadow Palettes, complete with a hashtag.

But if you can overlook that, these little palettes are very cute! The "Y" design is reminiscent of YSL, and you get an impressive NINE shades in an array of colour-coordinated finishes (matte, satin and shimmer).

There are two harmonies. Natural Nude is my favourite for a neutral champagne, gold and brown eye. Smokey Nude is more dramatic for evening, with silvers, navy, charcoal and taupe. The colour payoff is excellent!

Guerlain La Petite Robe Noir Black Lashdress Mascara

Guerlain La Petite Robe Noir Black Lashdress Mascara wand.

Guerlain La Petite Robe Noir Black Lashdress Mascara.

Most mascaras claim to do one major thing—like volumizing or curling. Guerlain La Petite Robe Noir Black Lashdress Mascara is more of an "all in one" formula that subtly enhances all types of lashes, similar to the little black dress concept after which it is named.

So you do get some volume, curl, length and definition, but in a very balanced way. Depending on how much you apply, it can look natural for the office, or a little more dramatic if you keep building. But if you're looking for a lot of thickness, this one isn't for you.

The wand features a ball tip that can take some getting used to, but I love it for getting at hard-to-reach lashes and doing the lower lashes. I don't know why some people have reported clumping—that has not been the case at all for me!

Victoria's Secret Tease Flower Rollerball

Victoria's Secret Tease Flower Rollerball.

Victoria's Secret Tease Flower Rollerball.

I love rollerballs, because you can have your fragrance-of-choice on your person at all times, and you don't have to commit to a full bottle. Hands down, the prettiest one of the season is the latest from Victoria's Secret, Tease Flower. How adorable is that flower around its neck?!

(If you're in the market for a full bottle, the larger size with a hot pink atomizer is even MORE girly and gorgeous... those flower appliqués really do not look cheap in person!)

The scent is a fresh-floral twist on the original Tease, which was warmer and more gourmand. I'm a sucker for anything vanilla, and it's in here, along with orchid and tulip notes.
