With winter still in full effect, February isn't the easiest month for taking care of your skin. If yours is anything like mine, it's dry, it's dull and it's sensitive. Fortunately, a bunch of new products have just landed that help with everything from hydration to brightening to anti-aging.
The ones I'm most excited about include...
- Individual vitamin C serum ampoules that keep the ingredients super-fresh and potent
- An anti-aging night cream with retinaldehyde (which is more effective and less irritating than retinol)
- The highest-dose niacinamide serum I've seen for targeting rough texture, clogged pores, dark marks and more!
Here's the lowdown on the best new skincare in stores now.
New Skincare for February 2020
Vichy LiftActiv Peptide-C Ampoule Serum
Vichy LiftActiv Peptide-C Ampoule Serum is an innovative new way to get your daily dose of vitamin C. The serum is packaged in an ampoule delivery system to preserve the freshness of the L-ascorbic acid, which is notoriously unstable. I love that it's a minimalist formula with only 10 ingredients in total, including 10 percent L-ascorbic acid (and no fragrance, silicones or parabens). Each package contains 10 ampoules, and one ampoule contains enough serum for two applications.
African Botanics Retinal Night Cream
African Botanics Retinal Night Cream is a nighttime moisturizer with retinaldehyde, one of the most powerful over-the-counter retinoids for treating wrinkles, blemishes, pigmentation and uneven tone. This cream also has lactic acid and azelaic acid to refine pores, and marula oil and squalane to hydrate. There aren't many retinaldehyde products on the market, even though it is more effective and less irritating than retinol—so this launch is particularly exciting!
Paula’s Choice Niacinamide 20% Treatment
Paula's Choice Niacinamide 20% Treatment contains the highest concentration of niacinamide on the market, 20 percent, in a clear, gel-like serum. While the brand's original 10 percent formula is more for general brightening, this one specifically targets stretched and clogged pores, orange-peel texture, blotchy skin and post-acne marks.
Summer Fridays Super Amino Gel Cleanser
Summer Fridays Super Amino Gel Cleanser is a mild, sulfate-free cleansing gel for all skin except sensitive. It uses a gentle coconut-based surfactant to break down dirt, oil and makeup, while 11 different amino acids help to retain skin's natural moisturizing factors (NMF). I'm obsessed with this seafoam green packaging!
Georgia Louise Hollywood EGF Micro-Needling + Ion Infusion Kit
Georgia Louise Hollywood EGF Micro-Needling + Ion Infusion Kit is the next best thing to a facial with celebrity esthetician Georgia Louise. The hand-held device can be used as either a microneedling treatment to stimulate collagen (using 20 shallow needles), or as an ion infuser to push the EGF Serum into the skin (using galvanic current). The needling is safe to do once or twice a week, while the infusion can be done as often as nightly.
Peter Thomas Roth Pro Strength Niacinamide Discoloration Treatment
Peter Thomas Roth Pro Strength Niacinamide Discoloration Treatment is a lightweight cream that treats dark spots, post-acne marks and dull, uneven skin. It's powered by a 15 percent brightening complex that includes niacinamide, tranexamic acid, kojic acid and alpha-arbutin. You're meant to wear this underneath your regular moisturizer, morning and night.
Wishful Yo Glow Enzyme Scrub
Wishful Yo Glow Enzyme Scrub is the first product from Instagram sensation Huda Kattan's new skincare line. It's a creamy exfoliating scrub packed with AHAs, BHAs, and pineapple and papaya enzymes. Sensitive skin should avoid this one, but everyone else can use it once or twice a week.
Versed Baby Cheeks All-In-One Hydrating Milk
Versed Baby Cheeks All-In-One Hydrating Milk is a multitasking milky liquid that can be used as a makeup remover, cleansing milk or hydrating toner—you just swipe it on with a cotton pad. It softens skin with coconut water, propanediol and glycerin, without leaving any residue behind.
Pixi +C Vit UnderEye Brightener
Pixi +C Vit UnderEye Brightener is a daytime brightening serum for the under-eye area. It gives both an instant effect from light-reflective pigments, as well as long-term results from L-ascorbic acid. It also has ferulic acid and vitamin E for added stability, and caffeine for de-puffing.
Dr. Brandt Dark Spots No More Triple Acid Spot Minimizing Concentrate
Dr. Brandt Dark Spots No More Triple Acid Spot Minimizing Concentrate is a serum and spot treatment that fights stubborn sun spots, age spots, post-acne marks and even melasma. The fragrance-free formula features a 21 percent brightening complex that includes an azelaic acid derivative, niacinamide, tranexamic acid and phytic acid. There are also botanical extracts that help to minimize any irritation.
Kora Organics Noni Night AHA Resurfacing Serum
Kora Organics Noni Night AHA Resurfacing Serum uses lactic acid to gently exfoliate, smooth and brighten your skin. It also contains natural sources of AHAs and BHAs, such as lemon peel, willow bark and white grapes, all infused into a base of aloe vera and avocado oil. Since AHAs make your skin more sun-sensitive, you should only use this at night.
Olay Deep Hydration Serum
Olay Deep Hydration Serum is a moisturizing and brightening serum, and it's surprisingly clean for a drugstore product. It's a fragrance-free and silicone-free formula, with niacinamide (vitamin B3) and hyaluronic acid acting as the star ingredients. It also has glycerin, squalane oil and panthenol.
Farsáli Liquid Powder Oil Balancing Serum
Farsáli Liquid Powder Oil Balancing Serum is a silicone-free and talc-free mattifying serum that goes on as a liquid but dries to a powdery finish. It absorbs oil and tames shine with silica, clay, azelaic acid derivative and witch hazel water (so just be sure you tolerate the latter, as some people find it irritating). You can either wear it alone or underneath your makeup.
Bliss Vitamin C + Tri-Peptide Collagen Protecting & Brightening Serum
Bliss Vitamin C + Tri-Peptide Collagen Protecting & Brightening Serum firms and fades dark spots with a super-stable form of vitamin C: ethyl ascorbic acid. It also incorporates a collagen-stimulating tripeptide, plus glycerin, licorice extract, squalane and vitamin E. There's a matching Moisturizer and Eye Cream, too!
Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Lip Pop
Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Lip Pop is three products in one: a lip scrub, a lip balm and a pretty pink tint. The exfoliating AHAs and coconut sugar melt on contact (no rinsing required), and the colour is sheer but buildable to a deeper shade of pink.
Mario Badescu Super Peptide Serum
Mario Badescu Super Peptide Serum is an anti-aging serum powered by peptides and hyaluronic acid. Specifically, it contains Matrixyl 3000, a peptide complex that has been proven to stimulate collagen and reduce wrinkles. You can wear this one day and night, underneath moisturizer.
Versed Weekend Glow Daily Brightening Solution
Versed Weekend Glow Daily Brightening Solution is an exfoliating toner that dissolves dead skin with glycolic and lactic acids. It also targets dark spots and post-acne marks with niacinamide, azelaic acid, kojic acid, bearberry extract and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (a vitamin C derivative). But despite all the powerhouse ingredients, it's still gentle enough to use daily.
Saturday Skin Pore Clarifying Toner
Saturday Skin Pore Clarifying Toner uses 10 percent glycolic acid to exfoliate dead skin and minimize the look of pores. To counteract its drying effects, there's also glycerin, propanediol, panthenol and sodium PCA. However, you should definitely avoid this one if you're sensitive, due to the acid, witch hazel water and essential oils.
Nécessaire The Body Serum
Nécessaire The Body Serum is a non-greasy, fast-absorbing hydrator for your entire body. It has a gel texture, and is made with a blend of propanediol, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, panthenol and ceramides. There's no fragrance or silicone in here, and you can wear it either alone or mixed with your favourite body lotion.
