Nicole Kidman, Before and After

The beauty evolution of the 'Moulin Rouge' star.

When you think about celebrities who get cosmetic procedures, the first person who comes to mind is probably Nicole Kidman.

I can't think of any other actress who has been critiqued so much for using injectable fillers and Botox. People even think she's had surgery.

Of course, we need to keep in mind that Nicole has been in the public eye for a REALLY long time. Now 47, her first movie was way back in 1983, when she was 16 years old!

Let's examine how her visage has changed over the years...

Nicole in 1983

Nicole was 16 here, and this was probably before de-frizzing products and flat irons were invented! Apparently, she hated her natural curls at the time.

Nicole in 1992

At 25, Nicole was all grown up. I feel like this kind of styling was so typical of the '90s, though—can you imagine seeing a young Hollywood starlet posing in a business suit today? Not going to happen. I have to say, Nicole's curls were glorious. This was probably her natural colour; she's actually a blonde, not a redhead.

Holy gorgeousness! We're so used to seeing an "enhanced" Nicole these days, I didn't realize just how stunningly beautiful she was in her 20s. Those red lips, the retro waves—why hasn't she been recreating this on a red carpet?

The following year saw the return of the waves and the introduction of a reddish hue that was to become her trademark. Notice her lips. I do think she later used filler in her upper one, but as you'll see a few pics down, maybe it wasn't as dramatic a transformation as people think.

'Practical Magic' was such a good movie for hair inspiration. I've been waiting and hoping for her return to the long red hair with bangs ever since. (It's probably not going to happen.)

So pretty! Nicole was 34 here, and truly at her prime. She had the most beautiful skin. I love the flushed cheeks, the Black Honey-esque lipstick and the reddish hair in a high ponytail. Everything still looks au naturel.

Believe it or not, I also love this look, which is a lot more high-fashion. (It's eerily similar to Missoni Spring 2010.) That said, I'm not so crazy about Nicole as a light blonde. I still think this was pre-injections era, but I wonder if her nose is a little smaller. If you compare this photo to the 1992 one, it's seems a touch narrower.

In 2004 (age 37), Nicole tried out a flapper theme. It's a bit too costumey, but I'm sure it was nice, for once, not to be fighting those curls into submission. This may have been the debut of the Botox and the upper-lip filler.

Nicole got back on track with these big, soft curls, fluffy bangs and sexy half-up 'do. This is another one of my favourites! I think I see a fuller upper lip here, but I don't get why people were going nuts over the "work" she had done. At least not yet.

I also love this hairstyle from the same year. How pretty is her side ponytail tied with a black ribbon, and softly parted bangs? I like the soft hair colour as well. I think her eyebrows might be overly arched (a.k.a. "Spocking") from Botox, since they naturally lie more flat. Her lips still look pretty normal.

Who could forget this iconic look, with the red dress and sleek, straight hair over one shoulder? Love! However, I'm a bit perplexed by her mouth. I think her upper lip is misshapen from Restylane injections. She's also got the telltale Botox "bunny lines" at the sides of her nose. That's because Botox can create new wrinkles you didn't even have before, from your face trying to move!

At these awards, Nicole wore her hair down in long, centre-parted waves. It's definitely glam, but I don't think it's the best hairstyle on her—I prefer it straighter and darker, with some kind of bang. But I'm assuming she does this blonde to hide greys. Her lips look good here (lovely lipstick colour as well) and I like the bold blush.

I really want to brush out these curls. With the solid blonde hair colour, they're making Nicole's hair look almost wig-like. No complaints with the makeup at all. Notice the bunny lines are still in effect!

Nicole in 2010

This is Nicole's prettiest pic in recent years, wouldn't you agree? She easily looks 10 years younger compared to the previous photo. The key was darkening her hair to a more natural-looking reddish colour. And honestly, she looks better when she keeps the styling simple: straight hair and barely any makeup. I think this is a great lesson—less is most definitely more as you age.

Nicole was 44 here, just to remind you! I think she looks great. Bangs always make people look younger (although these could be a little longer, skimming the bottom of the eyebrows). The only misstep is the return of the injected lips!

Nicole in 2012

The following year, Nicole was a beauty superstar in Cannes. She kept the reddish tones in her hair, just lightened it up a bit—and with her porcelain skin it's beautiful. Again, minimal makeup except for a pinky stained lip, which is a cool contrast with the red dress. Notice how there is not a mark on her skin—you can't fake that level of perfection with with foundation. But keep in mind, her forehead is so smooth due to Botox!

Next, Nicole chopped her hair to this popular lob (long bob) length, just below her collarbones. Although I miss the bangs, it's a nice, fresh change for her. Alas, there's too much filler in her cheeks, and the Botox around her eyes is causing that area to look tight, almost stretched.

And now she looks younger again. See how the side bangs make a difference? Also the ponytail. Her cheeks are still obviously plumped up, but overall I think she looks really great (she was 47 here!).

Then, Nicole went back to lob with a more vibrant strawberry colour. I really like how the same warm tones are echoed in her makeup. Either her blush isn't blended or the lighting is doing weird things to her one cheek!

Nicole's face may be a little tight, but I still think she looks pretty here. Her hair is longer now, and in the straight style I love. The purplish liner and pop of sheer fuchsia lipstick are unexpected and fun. Even her lips seem back to normal, if not her cheeks!

Now, Nicole's hair seems lighter than ever, and she's continuing to experiment with bolder makeup, such as this red lip. She appears to be be injecting stuff still, but it seems more restrained than before (especially her upper lip). However, what jumps out at me here is her jawline. All of a sudden, it's tight as a drum!

There's no question that Nicole's face has changed over the years. Believe it or not, she has denied having surgery and claimed to have given up Botox!

"I am completely natural," she told Marie Claire in 2007. "I have nothing in my face or anything. I wear sunscreen. I don't smoke. I take care of myself. And I'm very proud to say that."

After nobody believed her, she then admitted: "I did try Botox, unfortunately, but I got out of it and now I can finally move my face again."

Notice how she didn't even mention injectable fillers... sneaky, sneaky! Here's what plastic surgeons have to say.

"Botox has smoothed Nicole's crow's feet and the 11s between her brows, but her eyelids look heavy," Dr. Mirwat Sami told Life & Style. "Apparent fillers in her mid-face have provided fullness and a lift. They've also diminished deep lines between her nose and mouth."

There's also speculation that she had a facelift, which would explain the pulled look of her lower face in the 2017 photo. Dr. Lyle Back told Life & Style that he thinks she had a mini-lift to tighten her jaw and smooth her neck. And both doctors believe laser resurfacing has helped Nicole keep her skin bright and firm.

Whatever she's doing, her actual skin texture does look great. It's her desire to freeze and plump with needles that is getting carried away!
