Oscars 2020: The Best Skin, Hair and Makeup Looks on the Red Carpet
It's the biggest night of the year for Hollywood's A-list: a time to celebrate not only excellence in film, but also red carpet fashion and beauty.
Of course, I'm talking about the Academy Awards, a.k.a. the Oscars, which took place on Sunday night in Los Angeles.
As the culmination of the 2019 awards season, this event didn't disappoint—at least in the hair and makeup department.
Here are the must-see looks, along with product details!
Margot Robbie
Margot's styling had a rocky start this awards season—so has she redeemed herself with this look? I'm going to say yes. The dress may be a bit boring, but the matte, bright red lipstick against her flawless skin and blonde waves is giving me life. I also like the warm eyeshadow, natural lashes and soft arched brows. Even her roots had a little touch-up, finally!
Margot is wearing: Lipstick in Idéal
Penélope Cruz
If you feel like you've seen Penélope's look before, you're not alone—I think this is pretty much her go-to makeup at this point. But I'm not mad about it when she wears shimmery bronze eyeshadow and matte nude lips so well! Her long lashes and long hair are also amazing.
Penélope is wearing: Face mask • Serum • Moisturizer • Eye cream • Primer • Foundation in 350 Dore • Concealer in 215 Buff N • Powder in Translucent • Setting spray • Blush in Cedar Rose • Bronzer in Sunkiss • Highlighter in Light Pink • Eyeshadow primer • Eyeshadow in Terre de Sienne • Eyeliner in Bronze Folie and Bruns Frivole • Mascara in Excessive Black • Brow pencil in Brown • Brow gel in Brun • Lip liner in Ideal • Lipstick in Coeur De Rubis
Janelle Monáe
Only Janelle could pull off this futuristic hooded gown—and yet, it actually feels less costumey than many of her looks in the past. To go with it, she did her signature red lips with spiky lashes, brown shadow and feathery brows. The extra somethin'-somethin' is a swipe of glittery silver liner along her upper lash lines and underneath each pupil.
Janelle is wearing: Foundation in 302 and 303 • Lipstick in Dragon Girl
Scarlett Johansson
Rather than livening up her metallic gown with a bold lipstick or vintage waves, Scarlett kept everything easy and understated. The one big statement is the bright gold at the inner corners of her eyes, worn with the softest pinky-nude lips and long lashes. Her undone updo adds to the sexy vibe.
Salma Hayek
Every time I see Salma, I marvel over her skin (apparently this is how it stays so firm and plump!). Makeup-wise, the berry lip tones always flatter her, so I'm glad she went in that direction, along with copper shadow, subtle cat eyes and fluffy brows. However, I feel like the hair accessory is not needed, and kind of cheapens her look.
Salma is wearing: Primer in Silver • Foundation in BD65 Warm Bronze • Concealer in 2.5 Peach and 3 Almond • Powder in B30 Almond • Blush in Rose Lavallière • Eyeshadow in Legendary Gold • Brow pencil in Brun Cendre • Lipstick in Contrary Fuchsia
Léa Seydoux
So exciting to see Léa here (one of my French beauty crushes), when we usually have to wait until Cannes! I love everything about this look, from her soft waves and honey blonde hair colour to the bold brows and peachy lips and cheeks. Her skin doesn't even look like she's wearing foundation.
Gal Gadot
Gal's skirt/top combo left me seriously confused, but let's pretend that didn't happen and just focus on this luscious orange lipstick. It's so good with her skin (which is flawless) and her hair scraped back off her face. Her brows are neatly groomed, and the neutral eyeshadow adds just enough shading without demanding attention.
Gal is wearing: Foundation in Tawny • Concealer in Bisque • Blush in Rose Bomb • Eyeshadow in Original • Eyeliner in Black • Mascara in Blackest Black • Lipstick in So Lit
Florence Pugh
Finally, a pop of colour! I love this teal shade on Florence (but the style of her dress, not so much). Fortunately, the hair and makeup are on point. Her features are a makeup artist's dream, and the perfect canvas for winged liner, rosy lipstick and seamlessly blended blush. I really like the knotted updo as well!
Florence is wearing: Foundation in Light 7 • Concealer in L6 • Powder in Light (under eyes) • Powder in Light 1 (rest of face) • Highlighter in Nude • Eyeshadow in Divine Rose • Eyeliner in Xtreme Black • Liquid liner in Xtreme Black • Mascara • Lip liner in Bare Rose • Lipstick in Femme Bot
Natalie Portman
Poor Natalie; everyone else got good lighting, but she's under some weird shadows here. At least her hair looks great—I love this new shaggy bob she's rocking with slightly lighter ends. We can't see much of her makeup, but I do like the pale lips and strong brows.
Natalie is wearing: Serum • Serum • Eye cream • Foundation in 2W • Concealer in W2 • Powder in Light • Concealer in W1 mixed with Highlighter in Universal (as highlighter) • Contour in 001 • Blush in Coral Pop • Eyeshadow in Warm Neutrals • Liquid liner in Matte Black • Eyeliner in Trinidad Black • Mascara in Black • Brow pencil in Universal Brown • Brow gel in Black • Lipstick in Whisper • Lip gloss in Mirrored
Saoirse Ronan
Saoirse debuted a new set of baby bangs, and they're so adorable on her. They also put the focus on her eye makeup, which never fails to be interesting—here, she did black cat eyes with shimmery lavender all the way up to her brows. Then, instead of carrying the cool tones into her lipstick and blush, she did warm peach instead. I think her dress may have been a fail, but this beauty look is not!
Saoirse is wearing: Moisturizer • Eye cream • Foundation in 10 and 20 • Highlighter • Powder in 20 and 40 • Eyeshadow in Au Fil Des Fleurs • Eyeshadow in Au Fil De L'Eau • Eyeshadow in Miroir D'Eau • Eyeliner in Noir Profond • Mascara • Brow pencil in Blond Clair • Brow gel in Blond • Lip liner in Beige Naturel • Lipstick in Timeless
Lily Aldridge
When does Lily look anything less than stunning? The answer is never. This time, she played up her full lips with a bold red lipstick and stain (which have that sexy dabbed-on finish), worn with long lashes and sparkly warm shadow. Tucking her hair behind both ears creates an instant style, and shows off the glam earrings.
Lily is wearing: Moisturizer • Eye cream • Foundation in 5.75 • Concealer in 5 • Colour corrector in 1 • Bronzer/contour in 11.5 • Eyeshadow in Stellar • Mascara in Obsidian Black • Brow pencil • Lipstick in Four Hundred • Lip stain in The Red
Rooney Mara
Oh, how I've missed what Rooney brings to the red carpet! She really stays true to her aesthetic (which hasn't changed since her Girl with the Dragon Tattoo days). I know she's not for everyone, but I've always loved her straight brows, delicately shaded eyes, au naturel red lips and tight, unforgiving updos. And her complexion is to die for.
Charlize Theron
We're never going to see bold, exciting or experimental makeup on Charlize. But there's something to be said for subtlety, and I do think this tone-on-tone look was well done. Just like at the BAFTAs, she did a pinky eyeshadow, which is more current than a taupe or brown. I'm just not crazy about the bleached blonde pixie cut—I miss her brown bob!
Mindy Kaling
She may not look the most fashion-forward, but Mindy knocked it out of the park in this yellow dress. Bright colours truly bring her face to life! I think the hair and makeup are basically working—she can pull off the dark liner, and I like how the lip colour doesn't compete with the dress.
Mindy is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Foundation in Toffee • Foundation in Chestnut mixed with Foundation in Walnut (as contour) • Eyeshadow in Amber Neutrals
Brie Larson
I get what Brie was going for with this slinky dress and tight-to-the-head updo, and it looked pretty good in motion. But seeing it here, something is lacking. While I love her fresh face and minimal makeup, it's missing the "wow" factor of some of her previous looks. The streaky highlighted hair is not helping.
Billie Eilish
Billie isn't going for "best-dressed," and I'm fine with that. In fact, I'd much rather see a teenager in green hair and crazy nails than, say, 15-year-old Millie Bobby Brown trying to look twice her age! I also love how she has perfected this bored facial expression.
Renée Zellweger
I wasn't expecting any big fashion moment from Renée, but I did think she'd have better styling than this, being up for an Oscar. Her hair doesn't even look done, and the dress is so simple, it really needs some earrings. On the plus side, her skin looks incredible—so plump and fresh!—and I love the blush and lip colour. Do you think whatever cosmetic procedures she had a few years back may have been reversed?
Renée is wearing: Primer • Foundation in Light 5 and Light 6 • Foundation in L3 and L4 • Powder in Light (under eyes) • Powder (rest of face) • Highlighter in Golden • Eyeshadow in Gold Fortune, Moonphase and Tranquility • Eyeshadow in Astral Gold Allure • Eyeliner in Xtreme Black • Mascara • False lashes in C12 • Lip liner in Bare Rose • Lipstick
