Awards season has officially begun—and so has our awards season beauty coverage! We’re kicking things off with the annual People’s Choice Awards, which took place in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.
If this red carpet is any indication, we can expect a treasure trove of amazing looks over the coming weeks. So far, I’m seeing lots of glowy skin, pops of colourful eyeshadow and lipstick, and shiny hair that doesn’t look too “done.”
Here are all the night’s hair and makeup close-ups.
From The Skincare Edit Archives
Gabrielle Union at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Gabrielle is my favourite of the night. (How is she 42 years old?!) Her skin just glows, and I love the subtle smoky eyes with soft blush and sheer lip gloss. The texture in her hair (instead of curls) keeps it modern and fresh.
Ariel Winter at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Well, isn’t this lovely? Ariel had the most creative makeup on this red carpet—creative in a good way—and her shimmery blue eyeshadow was just perfectly executed. I’m even okay with the lashes, which have a thicker, more dramatic feel than the usual falsies. The perfect finishing touch are the freckles on the bridge of her nose. So cute!
Beth Behrs at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Oh wow, Beth needs a Lifetime Beauty Achievement Award for this look, because it’s the best I’ve seen from her ever. This matte pinky red lip is fantastic, and so modern, and I love that she went low-key on the eyes. Even her hair is just simply blow-dried, zigzag parted and tucked behind one ear. Less is more!
Olivia Munn at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
It’s all about Olivia’s freckles here, and her glowy skin. Her strong brows are balanced by the matte red lips, and then the high, textured ponytail gives it all a casual air. I love the idea of a slightly messy pony against a more sophisticated dress and makeup.
Katharine McPhee at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Katharine really nailed the whole effortless glamour thing, and I don’t know why more celebs don’t follow this universally flattering formula! Berry lips, subtly defined eyes and lashes, natural skin, barely-there blush, and a sleek, side-parted updo—it’s all working for her.
Kat Dennings at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Kat always does some version of these romantic curls with brown smoky eyes and a berry lipstick, but I can’t deny that it suits her so well. I do love the contrast of the lip colour against her pale skin and rosy cheeks. I just feel like a wash of silvery grey might’ve worked better on the eyelids than the brown. And there needs to be something somewhere to reflect the light—like some highlighter on her cheeks to make it less Goth.
Chloë Grace Moretz at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Ellen Pompeo at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Ellen is killing it in one of the riskier beauty looks of the night: a side-swept, chin-length faux bob with a glowing complexion and bold copper eyeshadow. (Take that, all the kiddos on this red carpet!) I applaud her for playing this just right, and showing off natural skin, lips and lashes.
Gina Rodriguez at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Gina looks so healthy and glowy with her seemingly foundation-free skin. And I love how glossy her hair is! The brushed-up brows and false lashes add some interesting texture to the makeup, especially in contrast with the paler lips. Pretty!
Stana Katic at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
I’m a fan of this simple, pared-down beauty look on Stana. It’s similar to Katharine’s, except the lips are a true red, and the liquid liner is stronger, with baby flicks. I love that easy texture she’s getting at the front of her updo, too. (At the back, her hair is pinned into a low bun.)
Kristen Bell at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Kristen is pregnant, hence her face is looking slightly fuller, in case you’re wondering. (At first, I thought it might be fillers, but no!) She’s playing up that pregnancy glow with lots of blush and emphasized her eyes with slightly chunky lashes. I’m kinda getting tired of this tousled/textured lob style, though. A smooth, bouncy blowout would’ve been my preference.
Cote de Pablo at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Cote’s faux bob hairstyle, tucked behind one ear and with a deep side part, is just genius—and so are her tone-on-tone highlights. Makeup-wise, she also played it just right with black liner all the way around her waterlines, and neatly groomed, straight brows. A bold mouth would’ve been too much, so I’m glad she kept her lips light and sheer.
Bella Thorne at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
If you’re not distracted by Bella’s lips, this is quite a nice beauty look. (I’m talking about the upper one... that can’t be natural, right? She is only 17!) The lipstick is so pretty, however—it looks like she added a bit of golden shimmer over top, which is very on trend right now. As usual, I can’t get enough of her strawberry hair colour.

Anna Faris at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Anna would be wise to take a few cues from Beth, no? I feel like this long, half-up hairstyle with the light teasing seems a bit dated. And her eyes are perhaps too harshly defined with so much dark liner (although I do like the sparkle). I’d love to see her back with that cute blunt bob that she used to have.
Caitriona Balfe at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Caitriona kept things very low-key, but this is saved by the pop of sheer berry lipstick. To me, it just doesn’t feel quite dressy enough—maybe some brows or stronger eye shading would do it here. I also think her hair is too dark for her skin tone (see how light her brows are in comparison?).
Sarah Hyland at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Sarah looks good, but this is a lot! My main issue is the overly tanned skin with the streaky blonde highlights. I would also like to petition for her brunette hair colour back because I don’t think blonde suits her skin tone (well, what we can see of it). As for the makeup, I don’t think she needs so much contouring and eyeshadow.
Sarah Rafferty at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
As always, Sarah’s hair makes the biggest beauty statement, especially with the matte red lips. (Who said redheads shouldn’t wear red lipstick?) But I don’t love her choice of false lashes, and I’d love to see more dewiness to her skin texture.
Camilla Luddington at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Is it just me or is Camilla overly tanned? I feel like her hair, skin and eye colours are so similar, they’re almost blending together into one caramel mass. I think this would immediately be better if she got rid of the prom tendrils and did a sleek updo.
Ginnifer Goodwin at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
This look is definitely on the tamer side for Ginnifer compared to some of the exciting makeup she’s played with in the past. Ah well, she’s a new mom, so let’s cut her some slack. Even if it’s not her best effort, her skin is as ridiculously flawless as ever, and she’s still rocking that short hair.
Kaley Cuoco at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards
Just when I was praising Kaley’s new short haircut, she goes and adds these streaky blonde highlights. At least her skin looks really good here, and I’m liking the blush and lip gloss. I don’t think she needs so much brown eyeshadow, and it would be better if she filled in the tails of her brows to make them fuller and straighter.
