What Renée Zellweger Did to Her Face, According to Plastic Surgeons

And why she's glad we noticed she looks "different."

Every time there's something in the news about a celebrity's rumoured plastic surgery, my email, phone and Twitter start blowing up like crazy. "Mayday!" was the title of one. "Saw this and thought of you," was another. "Okay, it's in the eyes. Right?" said a text this morning. I guess I have a reputation now, thanks to these.

Of course, the celebrity in question, who is blowing up the Internet this week, is Renée Zellweger. At Elle's Women in Hollywood Awards on Monday night, the 45-year-old 'Jerry Maguire' star was pretty much unrecognizable.

And I'm all like, "Oh, I've ALREADY done a Before & After on her, last year."

But it seems not everyone in the world knew about these surgical developments. So, shall we revisit?

(You can check out the original "analysis" of Renée here!)

Here's she is circa 2001, age 32. Those bee-stung lips before anyone had even heard of Restylane... so pretty!

And now in 2003, with a bit of 'Bridget Jones' weight gain (that still looks great on her).

And here's a more recent pic, from 2008. So far, so good. Until...

Oh my goodness! I've said it before and I'll say it again—you'd never know this was the same person.

But don't listen to me. Thanks to the renewed publicity in Renée's er, new face, a whole bunch of plastic surgeons have weighed in.

What Plastic Surgeons Say

Here's what they think she had done, as told to the NY Daily News.

  • Botox: According to Dr. Robert Guida. But then we suspected that already. What 40-something female celeb hasn't had it done? NBD.
  • Fillers: Again, according to Dr. Guida. Renée always did have a fuller face, but the way her cheeks are protruding now—more than they ever have before—is unnatural.
  • Eye Lift: "There is no question she has had her upper eyelids done," says Dr. Thomas Sterry. "She always had that cherub-y face, and suddenly ... her eyes (are) much wider." Dr. Guida agrees. "The extra hooded skin on her eyes isn't there anymore." Aha! So that explains the transformation, I think. If you look at the side-by-side, you can see how her brows used to be much higher.
  • Nose Job: "The bridge of her nose has become more narrow," says Dr. Victoria Karlinsky, who speculates that Renée had rhinoplasty. Personally, I don't see it—but she's the expert, after all.

What Renée Says

Do you think Renée Zellweger's new look is due to a new "healthy lifestyle"?

So there's an interesting twist this morning. Renée has spoken! To People magazine. Here's her statement:

"I'm glad folks think I look different! I'm living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I'm thrilled that perhaps it shows. [I spoke up because] it seems the folks who come digging around for some nefarious truth which doesn't exist won't get off my porch until I answer the door.

"My friends say that I look peaceful. I am healthy. For a long time I wasn't doing such a good job with that. I took on a schedule that is not realistically sustainable and didn't allow for taking care of myself. Rather than stopping to recalibrate, I kept running until I was depleted and made bad choices about how to conceal the exhaustion. I was aware of the chaos and finally chose different things.

"I did work that allows for being still, making a home, loving someone, learning new things, growing as a creative person and finally growing into myself. People don't know me in my 40s. People don't know me [as] healthy for a while. Perhaps I look different. Who doesn't as they get older?! Ha. But I am different. I'm happy."

So here's the latest side-by-side comparison of Renée, in 2008 (age 39) vs. 2014 (age 45).

What she said was sweet and all—but c'mon. Just own it!

I think it's great that she's happier, healthier and enjoying her life more now. We can all support her on that. But it's ridiculous to attribute her new look to "lifestyle changes". Does she think we're stupid?

Personally, I'd have LOADS more respect for her if she'd said, "Yeah, I didn't like the way my eyes looked. So I had something done about it. And now I'm happy." Sure, we don't recognize her, but at the end of the day, it's the hypocrisy that's annoying—nobody cares that much about the surgery itself.
