SAG Awards 2018: The Best Skin, Hair and Makeup Looks on the Red Carpet
If you were underwhelmed by the hair and makeup at the Golden Globes and the Critics' Choice Awards, this red carpet review is for you!
As you'll see in a moment, celebs definitely upped their beauty game for the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (a.k.a. the SAG Awards), held Sunday night.
Maybe it was better lighting. Maybe they eased up on the drying mattifying powders. Or maybe they've finally found their beauty mojo, mid-way through awards season.
Whatever the reason, I think you'll be impressed with these looks! Here they are:
Madeline Brewer
Madeline did the pink and red colour scheme in beauty form! This combo is a major trend in fashion right now, but she interpreted it in an entirely fresh way—with vibrant red hair, bold pink blush and creamy, orangey-red lips. (I NEED that shade!) Her skin is matte but not dry, and the soft brows and lashes keep the focus on the colour statement.
Madeline is wearing: Moisturizer • Eye cream • Foundation (all over) • Foundation (on high planes of face) • Brow powder (as contour) • Blush in So Close • Mascara in Black • False lashes • Brow gel in Brun • Lip balm • Lip liner in Menton • Lipstick in 300 Flesh • Body illuminator • Highlighter (on body)
Margot Robbie
Margot's messy, textured lob is giving me life. Pairing casual hair with a dressy gown is one of my favourite red carpet tricks for an effortless vibe. Since her dress was so pale, the makeup was just about amping up her natural colouring. The lipstick is very "your lips, only better," and there's a similar shade around her eyes—with a fun sprinkle of silver glitter. Her brows are fuller than ever, but you know what? I think they look good! Maybe we should all throw away our tweezers.
Margot is wearing: Blush in Pink Explosion • Eyeshadow in Flesh • Eyeshadow in Silver 2 • Mascara in Purple (top lashes) • Mascara in Noir Brun (bottom lashes) • Lipstick in Rouge Angélique
Olivia Munn
Olivia wore sleek, straight hair with a matte rose lipstick. I love that colour, and I love the rounded, precise edges. She's wearing similar tones on her cheeks and eyelids, with a good pair of fluffy lashes. The pearly-pink highlights at her inner corners make it all pop. I don't know if she's ever looked prettier!
Olivia is wearing: Foundation • Eyeshadow in Codes Subtils • False lashes in Little Black Dress • Lip liner in Beige Innocent • Lip colour in Rosa Tempera (on lips and cheeks)
Yara Shahidi
Yara paired glossy deep red lips with Diana Ross-inspired curls. (Really, that was her hairstylist's reference for this!) As always, her skin looks perfectly smooth and radiant, and she kept things age-appropriate with natural brows and lashes. She's got so much style and poise, how is it even possible she's only 17?!
Yara is wearing: Moisturizer • Eye serum • Blush in Rouge Profond • Eyeliner in Hyperblack • Eyeliner in Noir Intense • Lip balm • Lip liner in Séduction • Lipstick in Pirate • Lipstick in Rouge Noir • Lip colour in Rosso Parthenope • Lip gloss in Épique
Dakota Fanning
I can't get over Dakota's glowing (and insanely flawless!) skin, worn here with flushed cheeks and a high bun. The Fanning sisters do ethereal beauty so well, don't you think? The textures of her brows and lashes are particularly amazing, and I love how the silver shadow brightens her eyes.
Dakota is wearing: Blush in Cocktail Peach • Luminizer • Eyeshadow in Inflame • Mascara • Brow pencil in Light Brown • Tinted lip balm in Holo Pink
Saoirse Ronan
Saoirse wore iridescent lilac eyeshadow to match her dress, with (gasp!) bare lashes. She keeps skipping mascara, and I fully approve. I think it works because her style is a bit tomboyish, and her eyes already stand out on their own. The darker, perfectly shaped brows help, too. Those of you who hated her Critics' Choice blonde will be happy to see a more natural hair colour here.
Saoirse is wearing: Face mist • Moisturizer • Face oil • Eye cream • Foundation in 10 Beige • Blush in Rose Ecrin (on cheeks and edges of lip colour) • Powder in 10 Beige • Eyeshadow in Tissé Beverly Hills • Eyeshadow in Fantasme • Brow gel in Transparent (on brows and lashes) • Brow pencil in Blond Tendre • Lip liner in Pink Sugar • Lip colour in Rosso Parthenope (on lips and cheeks)
Tracee Ellis Ross
Tracee's matched her red lipstick to her ruby earrings. She really doesn't need anything else, so I love that she paired this with defined lashes, bare lids, and a close-to-the-head updo. She always looks amazing, but this might be my favourite Tracee look EVER!
Tracee is wearing: Bronzer in Tantric • Eyeshadow in Glambition • Mascara in Noir • Lipstick in Dashing
Mandy Moore
I appreciate how Mandy's sexy, messy waves don't look too "done." Her skin is incredible—practically poreless—and the pink shades on her lips and lids are great tones for her. But I'm not feeling super-enthusiastic about all the colours of eyeshadow happening here, or the unblended bottom lip liner.
Mandy is wearing: Serum • Face mist • Foundation in Golden • Concealer • Eyeshadow in Terracotta • Eyeshadow in Lagoon • Eyeshadow in Burnished Bronze • Eyeshadow in Rosegold • Lipstick in Vibe
Reese Witherspoon
Reese has such a golden glow. There's not just one thing that stands out here—it's the entire effect. She hasn't looked this fab in ages! The sheer pink lips and soft brown smoky eyes really flatter her, as do the side-parted waves (even if they're not "on trend"). Her skin is in fantastic shape as well.
Reese is wearing: Serum • Moisturizer • Eye cream • Foundation • Concealer • Blush in Tearose • Blush in Honey • Blush in Nectar • Eyeshadow in Bronzed To Be • Eyeliner in Espresso • Mascara in Intense Black • Lip liner in Papaya • Lipstick in Honeysuckle • Lipstick in Desert Rose
Kristen Bell
Kristen did pink everything—lips, cheeks, earrings, dress! She definitely suits soft, fresh looks like this, rather than dramatic and edgy. (Compare and contrast with last year's Globes, for example.) The updo gives this a pretty, ballerina vibe.
Kristen is wearing: Face mask • Moisturizer • Eye cream • Foundation in Buff • Concealer in Light • Bronzer in Sunkissed • Eyeshadow in Cool Plum • Eyeshadow in Cocoa Mauve • Mascara in Black/Brown • Lip balm
Halle Berry
Halle's skin—oh my God! (She's 51, I will remind you.) She always looks amazing in subtle makeup, such as this nude gloss and mascara. I think the purplish shadow is cool, but I might not put so much under the eyes, which can look like dark circles. You need to see the high ponytail from the back to really appreciate it. Yes, that bottom part is shaved!
Alison Brie
Alison wore soft lashes with well-blended shadow and an understated rosy lip colour. Her dress had such bold colours, anything too strong on the eyes or lips would've looked garish. I definitely like this updo better than her Critics' Choice shag. I just think the stripe of contour is too dark, and her brows could be more feathery.
Alison is wearing: Serum • Primer • Foundation • Concealer • Powder • Bronzer • Eyeshadow in Not So Nude • Eyeliner in Espresso • Mascara in Intense Black • Brow pencil in Brownette • Lip balm • Lipstick in Scarlet
Taylor Schilling
Taylor's smoky, shimmery eyes in shades of charcoal and silver are one of her prettiest looks yet! Her skin is in great shape, and her lips and brows are perfectly understated. The texture and volume at the top of her updo, along with the earrings, ties it all together.
Taylor is wearing: Moisturizer • Skin perfector • Eyeshadow in Drama • Eyeshadow in Black Diamond • Eyeliner in Silver
Gina Rodriguez
Gina paired her fresh, radiant skin with glossy red lips and a touch of shimmer at the inner corners of her eyes. I like that her hair is a little imperfect—it has some flyaways. This isn't exactly an "on trend" look, but I'm always drawn to her healthy, happy vibes! I would just take a little more care with the brows (i.e. drawing hair-like strokes instead of a horizontal line straight across the bottom).
Kate Hudson
Kate wore her pixie cut with chunky lashes and soft, neutral tones. Really, it was the only possible makeup choice with this questionable dress! I'm patiently waiting for her hair to grow out. Also, the colour seems off—the tips look frosted!
Kate is wearing: Moisturizer • Foundation • Concealer • Powder
Allison Williams
Allison's makeup is better than the last two times we saw her, so there's that. The scarlet lipstick is definitely more flattering to her skin tone and eye colour. But the heavily gelled faux bob with dark lips and smoky eyes feels kind of severe. She doesn't need so much!
Allison is wearing: Lipstick in Superb Wine • Lipstick in Red Supreme
Nicole Kidman
I always did love a side bun, and Nicole's is no exception—although I do think she looks younger when she wears it down. (For example, the way she had it at the AMAs.) The red lipstick brings out the blue of her eyes, but her skin looks a bit dry here.
Nicole is wearing: Moisturizer • Foundation in Natural Ivory • Concealer in Fair • Bronzer in Sunkissed • Blush in Rosy • Eyeshadow palette in Soft Taupe (copper shade) • Eyeliner in Spiced Chocolate • Mascara in Black • Lip gloss in Velvet Wine
