Editor’s Picks: 7 of the Best Fragrances to Wear This Spring

From modern rose to sparkling citrus.
The Skincare Edit and Sephora

Over here, I'm packing away my winter woolens, dealing with the hair removal situation and getting my SPF on—all in prep for the imminent spring weather.

But there's one more thing I can't forget: switching up my scent!

Obviously, the sweet gourmands and ouds of winter just will not do, now that we're heading into sandal season.

If you're thinking about a new perfume to get you in a springtime state of mind, I've got seven top picks from this year's new launches:

CLEAN Reserve Blonde Rose

CLEAN Reserve Blonde Rose.

What's in it: Aldehydic watery note, rose, peony, jasmine, cedarwood, sandalwood, musk.

Why wear it: If you're a beauty hippie like me, and you don't like your perfume to smell like everyone else's, then you'll appreciate CLEAN's new CLEAN Reserve collection dedicated to sustainably-sourced, eco-conscious niche scents. Blonde Rose is more "blonde" than rose (or at least how I imagine blonde to be); it bears no resemblance to powdery, old-lady florals. It's actually very fresh, sexy and clean—I can't even smell rose in here—but not overly aquatic nor synthetic, either. With its rustic wood cap, Blonde Rose is definitely my top pick from this year's crop!

NEST Citrine

NEST Citrine.

What's in it: Lemon blossom, lotus flower, freesia, dew drop accord, precious woods.

Why wear it: Speaking of niche perfumes, another favourite brand is NEST. Their latest is Citrine, and it's one of the most beautiful citruses I've ever come across. The focus is the lemon note, with just a faint hint of floral in the background; there's also a sparkling quality here that feels bright and cheerful. Citrine would be a fantastic daytime office scent for warmer weather. It's spring in a bottle!

Dolce & Gabbana Dolce Rosa Excelsa

Dolce & Gabbana Dolce Rosa Excelsa.

What's in it: Papaya flower, neroli leaves, white amaryllis, white daffodil, white water lily, African dog rose, Turkish rose absolute, cashmeran, musk, sandalwood.

Why wear it: The prettiest bottle of the season HAS to be Dolce & Gabbana's new Dolce Rosa Excelsa. (Don't you just die over that flower cap?!) It's also another example of a rose that doesn't really smell like rose. This one is for the fruity-floral lovers out there—I'm getting a luscious bouquet of tropical fruit and white flowers, with undertones of musk. At the same time, it's still quite sheer and more pretty than sensual. I'd wear this out on a warm night, with a floral dress.

Philosophy Amazing Grace 20th Birthday Special Edition

Philosophy Amazing Grace 20th Birthday Special Edition.

What's in it: Bergamot, muguet blossoms, musk.

Why wear it: With all things '90s making a comeback right now, it feels like the perfect time to re-embrace one of the era's most cult-favourite scents. Philosophy has just come out with a 20th Birthday Special Edition of Amazing Grace—can you believe it launched in 1996? It was one of the first perfumes I ever wore, a cozy, soapy "skin" scent that feels fresh out of the shower. I think Amazing Grace is as unique now as it was then!

Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy Rosé

Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy Rosé.

What's in it: Italian mandarin, William pear, jasmine petals, rose centifolia absolute, white peony, jasmine sambac, orris absolute, benzoin, ambrox.

Why wear it: Note the accent—Juicy Couture's newest perfume is about rosé(the wine), not rose (the flower). As such, Viva La Juicy Rosé is VERY effervescent, like a tall champagne glass full of fizzy pink bubbly! I find this one the most fruity, and of course, it's girly to the extreme. And yet, it's also not too sweet, despite the Barbie-esque glitter bottle and hot pink chiffon bow.

Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream Blush

Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream Blush.

What's in it: Violet leaves, lily of the valley, vetiver, waterlily, rose, clean musks, bergamot, freesia.

Why wear it: First of all, the pink daisies on the chubby '60s bottle. Swoon! But you'll also like Daisy Dream Blush, a new interpretation of the original Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream, if you like violet notes. Yep, nothing to do with daisies, but the violet in here comes through loud and clear. (So it's definitely not some lightened-up version of Daisy Dream.) The other notes are somewhat aquatic, which gives an airy contrast to the lush floral. Also not for the shy—I'd say Daisy Dream Blush is the most intense of the perfumes on this list.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Fragrance Collection Gift Set

Derek Lam 10 Crosby Fragrance Collection Gift Set.

What's in it: 2am Kiss: salty wood, crystalized amber. Looking Glass: Chinese magnolia, tonka bean. Blackout: osmanthus, chai tea essence. Rain Day: neroli, vetiver. Hi-Fi: pink peony, French narcisse. Ellipsis: Australian sandalwood, jasmine. Something Wild: cedarwood, vanilla bean. Afloat: white mimosa, orris. Silent St.: white musks. Drunk On Youth: apple, honeysuckle.

Why wear it: When you can't decide on just one spring fragrance... there's the Derek Lam 10 Crosby Fragrance Collection Gift Set, which includes 10! The New York-based fashion designer was inspired by 10 city streets and 10 "moments" to create this range, which has something to please everyone. They're all lovely, but my three favourites are 2am Kiss (super-spicy and unique), Ellipsis (feminine white florals) and Something Wild (smoky vanilla). Once you finish the set, you can buy your favourite in the larger size.
